i got a lanikai and it is great. it was cheap, not as cheap as a mahalo, but it's way better than a mahalo, and worth every penny. but it sounds great and is easy to tune and it's a beautiful uke, though not flashy and i didn't pay an arm and a leg for it so i'm happy.

Thanks for the encouragement :-) Yeah, I think I'll stick with the old time and novelty tunes. Keeps the fun aspect of the instrument to the fore.

i got a lanikai LU-21 TE! any thoughts on this? cant wait for the next lesson, perhaps the beatles, or isreal with somewhere over the rainbow?

I havn't tried the LU-21 TE, or any other Lanikai.  There arent many ukes on sale here in Australia. I bought my martin on ebay. I'm suer it will be OK for a beginner instrument. Anything around the 50 to 100 dollar mark would be OK. I might do a Beatles number on one of the upcoming lessons but I wouldn't really consider "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", it's not funny enough!

I will consider doing amazing grace but I prefer old-time songs and novelty songs. I threw in Auld Lang Syne for the Xmas, new Year season.
