ALL these tex avery cartoons are the BEST.brings back memories and are still juz a funny as when i was 5-11y/o. i didnt realize thar so many.thanx b2 gawd.
there is a LOT of '50's-inspired, relatively-minimalist, UPA-derivative backgrounds,---and indeed, -animation---on display here.....on the other hand, the 'creeping car' shot exemplifies alot of earlier, '30S stretch-n-squash animation......reckon this short was a REAL cross-generation collaboration at M-G-M in the '50s.......
Did anyone every "get" that the wolf was a racists stereotype character? Don't get me wrong it is hilarious i love the droppy stuff but the wolf was supposed to be a lazy negro. i have seen this episode aired as recently as the late 1990's, anybody know when they stopped selling those dumbo movies with the negro birds? lol by the way i'm black so STFU in advance.
If the wolf is a Negro caricature, it seems somewhat odd that in "Blackboard Jumble" he puts on a gray kepi and asks his students to paint "something patriotic...like a Confederate flag." (On the other hand, of course, it seems fairly odd that a Confederate should be so fond of whistling an abolitionist tune like "Kingdom Coming.")
The wolf is a Southern stereotype, not a black racist cariacature at all. Which isn't to say Tex Avery cartoons didn't feature such stereotypes, but this isn't one of them.
Yeah, I know that. That's why I commented on how the dog catcher sounded EXACTLY like Huckleberry Hound. I have a feeling that much of Hanna-Barbera's material would be inspired by the creations of these MGM characters when it comes right down to it.
Of course, he was, 'Iam'. Daws Butler was a veteran actor on radio, and first worked for Tex Avery (and MGM) in 1950- then he started doing voices for the Hanna-Barbera unit...and the rest is history. Fred Quimby once said of Daws' "Wolf" characterization, "Every time he opens his mouth, he gets a laugh..".
Daws Butler, of course, was the "Wolf" and the narrator, and Bill Thompson was "Droopy". Tex saw to it that Daws used his patented "North Carolina drawl" as much as possible- and later, of course, Hanna-Barbera used it for "Huckleberry Hound".
Not 1, not 2, but 3 of the funniest cartoon quotes ever--all right here: "Now don't ask us how we got the television set back" (They broke the 4th wall and read our minds) "OK son, break it up. Joke's over, hear?" (Flawless use of a running gag, especially knowing how and when to end it) "MEOW! man" (Simple yet priceless)
post the cartoon with droopy is the deputy and the crooks try to open a safe in the sheriffs office but at the same time the gotta keep quiet or they'll cause the sheriff to come in
"MEOW MAN!" This was always my fav. Love the part where the missile flys around and hits him and he has that blank face. lol "ok break it up son the jokes over ya hear."
what is the name of the wolf. he was my all time favorite character. he never lost his cool, but I never knew his name. this character was severly underated in my opinion.
