Dear Patrol Orthodontics,

I'm getting braces in about five days and I've been trying to get some advice and information for them so that I know what to do and what to expect. I know how to brush and floss. I know what and what not to eat and I know what to take if I feel pain but my only problem is where do I get all of those toothbrushes, floss, floride rinse ect.?

Do I get them at the orthodontist's office or do I have to go to the store to buy them? If so, how mush do they cost on average?

i just got braces yesterday but only on my top teeth and i find it a bit painful to brush my teeth. i dont have a proxa brush and everytime i try to brush my top row of teeth i feel like i didnt really do anything because i barely even put force on my teeth when im brushin them cuz it would hurt me really bad. i need help. im not sure if im brushing my teeth the right way. plz reply

oh you are! i have braces. the first couple of the days the braces hurt because the force of the braces are putting pressure on your teeth. when your teeth dont hurt no more you can press harder on your teeth. dont worry

hi the back part of the brace has came off on the top row of my teeth levaing a lose wire it keeps sticking into the side of my mouth what should i do?

If you were a patient in our office we would want to see you immediately to come in and have your braces rebonded. If that were not feasible we would ask that you cut the wire yourself using a cuticle cutter and cottonball to make yourself comfortable until you could come in. Wax is always a great tool as well if you can get it to stick. You can get it at any drug store in the oral care section. Good Luck!

We have our patients use Superfloss by OralB. It is prethreaded floss and the floss is not traditional and very easy to get into tight places and very hard to break. Good Luck it is very important to keep the gums clean and healthy during orthodontics.

Dear PetrolOrtho, I'm going to get braces maybe before christmas starts. it is august now. i was wondering if you should use floss AND a waterpik. my dad says that i should use a waterpik. so should i use just floss, use just a waterpik, or use both? Please right back. ~AwesomeDancer712

The healthier your gums are now the better result you will have with your braces. You should use both the waterpik and the floss. One does not take the place of the other. It is great to get into an oral hygiene regimen now so that once the brace go on you are already in the habit! Good Luck and look into a Flouride Rinse as well. It protects your teeth from decalcification with the braces on.

I dont think you can chew gum because it can become stuck to your braces, I just got my braces on for the second time a month ago and I remember the first time not being allowed to eat gum, drink soda that kind of stuff.

We do not recommend it or discourage it necessarily. It can be harmful to the braces and hard to clean out of small spaces.

Do you have to eat certain kinds of food when you get braces, cuz im geting them this month and yeah, my friend got them and all she can eat was jello for lunch. So write me back.

It is more important to watch how you eat things. Like corn on the cob has to come off the cob, get meat off the bone, ribs and chicken. The first few days you will have to try easing back into eating regular foods. Start with Mac n Cheese, Spaghetti O's and soft foods. At Petrol Orthodontics don't regulate what to eat too much except hard chewy candies, popcorn and things like that. Good Luck!!!

The procedure of getting your braces on does not hurt, but it takes a good 45 minutes to get them on. That night you may feel some discomfort, but it is more of a musular soreness. That soreness usually last a few days, but tends to subside by the second or third day. A little Ibuprofen can't take the edge off or a smothie or frostie can also release some of the tension you feel.
