What I don't understand is what motivation would Soze have to do this whole elaborate plan? You could argue it was to kill the one person who could finger him, but in the end the police have a picture of him and the detective figures it out, so now the whole world knows what he looks like

No, Verbal IS Keyzer Soze... The whole story he told was just bullshit.. Everything he said was based on the things that's written on the wall, and the name that's under the cup of the police. That's why the police starts to run after him when he understands that everything he said was bullshit, and he's Keyzer Soze.

I think one of the main reasons why this is so great is that it really has no one and only answer. There wouldn't be a movie if it weren't for the fact that he got himself out babbling everything based on the names on the wall. That's the most important thing, everything else is secondary. Maybe we are not supposed to think which things are true in the story. After all, we can't be sure. That's how I see it.

Imo real soze is 'kobayashi' cause the real soze's intention was being an anonym. Think about it. who saw kobayashi? those 5 guys and keaton's girlfriend. They are all dead.
