Which gospel are you referring to? There are nearly a ten if I remember correctly. Personally I think the film is more of a satire of religion than any particular persons' belief. Look at how everyone jumps on the bandwagon claiming Brian as the Messiah without ever asking questions. Religion is like a club you can join. Oh, and the gourd and sandals that are worshiped as relics of Brian could be seen as the respect given to church leaders instead of the actual god people claim to believe in.

The film does not mock Jesus, Jesus has got nothing to do with the storyline. It's about the life of someone who lived at the same time as Jesus but was mistaken for him. Lots of people at the time claimed to be messiahs and prophets, the Bible quotes this. And with all due respect, I don't really like the you automatically associate crucifixion with Jesus, and the idea of others being crucified is blasphemy. Remember, the Romans crucified thousands of people, not just Jesus.
