  • Lol a good drum and bass song; that's an oxymoron

  • Check out my D&B beat on my channel

  • the beats must have more bass, but is ok ;)

  • there's a HUGE stabby bit of sub in there somewhere that makes my ears pop. I can't tell if it's a mistake, part of one of the other sounds, or you did it on purpose... but I like it. :-)

  • fuck it jus make tunes man...sounds like art 2 me

  • CONSTRUCTIVE criticism okey, you just need a sound mental state or can be someone elses this is important else you wont see the middle and will crash at the end, so the idea is to stay on the road and have a road, also to be highly familiar with the equipment your using ,must know it like the back of your hand so dont use things thats way out of your depth i personally use a spectrum 48k ,lastly control & tame your acids & bases as they will eat you alive hope that helps.

  • also ...In the last part the synth is slightly out of sync at times it shouldnt matter if it was part of the vibe you was feeling , thats like van gogh (you know whos paintings stick out a mile in 3d) saying sorry i used too much paint :P

  • Nice electronica style D'N'B there. I'd probably have placed another Drums-only section in the midsection of the piece but then I'm a Drummer and also a fan of the build-up/tear-down style. Send me the mp3! =D

  • I've tried producing some DnB tracks myself, and all I can give are some pointers from my perspective.

Composition: listen to your favorite music, any music. Other DnB tracks will give you direction towards the beat. You'll figure this out by yourself, I'm sure :)

Production: Chase & Status have quite a good tutorial explaining some of the production techniques. Propably the most important one is not to use too much "spacy" elements, because that steals room from other instruments, FX etc.

  • naah not drum and bass, ended up more like techno

  • @endoneezer That's actually not really like techno at all, it's definitely drum and bass.

  • lol

i thought this was intro .. but then i realised thats ur whole song :D

    but still its nice

  • make this less shit

  • 160 bpm.

  • sounds good

  • Nice potential

  • what program did you use?

  • Ever heard of volume? Or Mastering?!

  • This is a good start, but let me tell you, swtich on over to renoise and behold the magical tunes you will now be able to create with that tracker. :)

I started on reason too, but after renoise there is no going back :D

  • you chat shit. get a decent program... not some shit that cost 20 quid.

  • what constitutes a decent program ? People can do more with inexpensive renoise opposed to something like Fruity Loops.

  • 180 BPM Isn't fast at all!

    I used to do 170..

    Then changed to 180..

But 200 Works pretty nice aswell.

Some of the tunes i did (Which are on my profile) Are done at 200.

Sounds not bad to me tbh.

  • I'm using 250 lol

  • Not bad man, as for people saying its too fast - its definitly not! I always write in 180bpm, find thats the most pounding of tempos. Tbh your drum beat sounds a bit weak and everything else seems to over-power it. Try layering kicks and snares *over* the drum loop where they hit respectively - this phattens up the sound. Try putting ( if you used reason 4(??) ) all drum components through a Spider Audio merger and Compress it - this also makes it 'phat' :P

    Nice attempt :)

    - Peace

  • It is a little fast, however, I think that it's not really as fast as it sounds. The drum beat is a little flat and there's not really any atmosphere which is what gives it that faster sound. A lot of dnb artists now are messing with the higher bpm range, especially Noisia and from a DJ standpoint I can say that this really isn't that fast based on what other artists are putting out.

  • i always find a 165 or 170 bpm to be best i dont write drum and bass but i do use elements of it in my tunes. a lot of the feel in dnb is down to the mix at the end. just listen to loads of dnb or try and recreate a dnb song. that way youll get the jist of it but since you so your only starting i must say your on the right track mate :)

  • how do you do this exactly, i want to get into this stuff.

but as for criticisism goes i think you could have added more synth stuff in there, maybe a better melody and varying drumbeats. still good, liked the speed

  • too fAAAST! 170 bpm is the right speed.

  • too fast.

  • The whole thing was just amen

  • put some sub frequency in the bass, definetly increase the volume of the drums, add a good snare to 5th&13th of 1 bar and a kick to the 1st&11th and add some hi hats and play this with the break thats already there.Drums should always be the loudest part.Hope this helps.

  • mix up the rythym so it doesnt run on so much...and take your time to form a constructive melody/bassline, to avoid it sounding like a bunch of cluttered samples. so basically just add texture.

    and break it up!

  • break up the beat more, shift it around an get some cool percussive rhythms in there instead of a straight amen break

  • you posted this beat a long time ago but....

just as a reminder dont use so many samples.

  • The genre of DnB has some of the highest quality production talent out of all genres, it takes alot of skill to make a high quality DnB track, this person has a way to go of course but to say all DnB is rubish is just ignorant. You don't like DnB, that's your opinion, but it's far from rubish. There is alot of crap in DnB, as there is in any genre. DnB is so eclectic that if you took your favourite genre, there's a DnB take on that sound. Jazz, electro, atmospheric, rock, it's all there.

  • Well thank fuck you cleared that up, i was on a path to self destruction there, but now perhaps i can redeem myself with your guidance.

Tell me, what's production background, and we're talking about music creation not mixing and mastering just to be clear.

  • haha you obviously learnt how to make music from a book that much is clear, you obviously know what the amen break is judging from your 2 feeble offerings, i wouldn't stoop so low as to put my music on you tube although it is there. you can buy it on vinyl if you really want to hear it properly.. amen loop, sick of it!!!

  • I didn't learn from books, i taught myself everything, i've never used the amen, i never mentioned the amen, fact is i'm sick of amen based tracks aswell. Not sure where you're comming from but you're grossly missinformed, as am I. I don't know you, so i can't pass judgement. I have an open mind to all music and i've listned to a tonne of DnB, there is alot of difference from once side to another, i hate a good majority of styles and love others. You can't just cast a veil of opinion over it all

  • coonstabber you just had your balls handed to you on a plate, shut up. Ignorant faggot, please present some of your celestial creations. Dickheads like you lurking on youtube listening to music made for people better than you. Fuck off.

  • So you release jungle tunes on vinyl under the name 'Coonstabber'?

  • I'd never release jungle tunes..that's 1 up from jazz man

  • No I think classical still takes the cake.

  • Bring up the drums into the foreground and cut those breaks up so the beat isnt a constant , need to vary that beat a lot more .

  • BALLER!

  • nice beat man, but it would be way cooler if you raised the volume of the drums, and the bass.

  • TURN UP THE DRUMS!

    THEN, ADD SOME BASS!

  • 6. Sample said breaks into sampler. Get feel for groove, timestretch. Edit hits over and over. make chunks. sample to tape/cassette/dat and back again. Create constructive noises and start sequencing everything with atari.

    7. Continue solidly for weeks / months.

    8. Produce finished tracks.

    9. Invent time machine and travel back to 1993-1995.

    10. Release track to critical acclaim.

  • Laugh Out Loud,, i hav thought that so many times...i wish i had a time machine, i would f'in clean up .. i'd be guest of tha week on one in the jungle ... nevermind, i was too late,

  • Not good. Classic Drum and Bass is not made with software. Idealy you should:

    1. Buy some cheap but decent monitors and an analogue mixer.

    2. Buy an akai sampler (older the better)

    3. Buy an atari st w. cubase or similar.

    4. Buy a turntable.

    5. Get your hands on any breakbeat records you can. Amen brother is available on loads of compilations, or just nick it from other dnb records (that's what people did back in the hardcore days anyway)

  • another few months and you'l be dicking all over high contrast haha :D

  • er fucking shite man sorry but it is

  • i think you shud work with the first 44 seconds, try making ur own drums loops (get each drum sample - i know it takes longer but u get a much more satisfying result :)

  • that was rude :)

  • whut was?

  • for a first attempt its bloody good! i reckon you just need to sort out the drum-loop and it will be much better!!

  • true true

  • Well first off you need to eq your drums to hell. They're so muffled under everything. You gotta bring them out. It's too soft. You need a nice crunchy bass before it can even sound like drum n bass. There was nothing! It was so empty and... not full of life. It could be good if you just add compression and eq it all correctly. Keep it up.

  • good advice, them drums REALLY need to come out. Check out some filters like CamelPhat or somthing.

  • i liek that part at about 0:45 where it went choo chooo./ !1o1

  • the drums seems cloudy... like there's no real FINITE beat to it... its like infinite clumsyness?

MORE TIME & PRACTICE WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL!

    DONT GIVE UP

  • It will sound really good when you put some drums and a bassline in it. :-P

  • shite. what amen? treble'n'synth blud

  • good work man.

you could play this in a club easy.

  • Nit in any club ive been in, not a bad effort tho.

  • Yeah, drums sound thin as fuck..

Put another fatter drum track in dubbed over the top and it could be pretty cool.

  • well everything has a beinning ... keep working!

Check my channel to listen to my tracks :D

  • ive been producin DNB music now for a year and now im using reason anyway check out my music and post a cmment Thx

  • I like it! Doesn't sound much like amen break, but the digressing of the melody was very good. You could maybe add more bass kicks, because the drums have kind of a thin feel to them. Also, maybe use more sustain on the strings. The notes seem to change too suddenly. Overall, it was good! Better than my first try! Jeeze! I don't wanna re-live that!

  • u know what the samples that ur using arent bad its just all over the place timing stuff like that u need to sort that out and compose the song so it has a chorus verse all of that thrown in good luck

  • try putting more reverb on your short sounds so there not quite as glich soundign and turn the drums up (mint for a first try though) what you using?

  • Reason 3 for this, currently using Reason 4,not really putting much effort into producing anymore though,Im very busy.

    Cheers for the advice

  • be careful using reverb, is a very messy effect, you need to make sure the sounds you are applying this effect to are eq'ed properly, otherwise you get all sorts of extra shite clouding up the mixdown.

  • A bit too fast. Not bad though.

  • keep trying ( try the amen! its holy :O )

    better equalizing =/

  • I remember the first tune i ever made was on Music by codemasters on playstation in 1998. I've improved since then and so will you.

  • the bpm's don't neccessarily have to be that high. Good composition though, you god an idea for what you want, just don't over do it with the tones. Also try to change the drum breaks a bit, its the same four count beat the entire time, could use some changes (especially if you used the amen break. There's alot in that particular break to take, like the cash cymbals, the different toned snares, and especially when the snare lags.

  • wayyy tooo much in that drum beat. and the change in beat isnt smooth enough at keep tryin tho and dnt let these cunts get to u. im sure they cudnt do ne betta

  • first of all m8, i think its wicked that you puttin in efgort to try out new sounds, thats what its all about. truth is i cant really write drum n bass, but when i tried i found that more ideas started flowing when u concentrate more on writing the bass melody. then a simple drum n bass 2/4 and then just keep adding drums! and by making the drums powerful but not overpowering. but as i said that was what i found....whatever u hear in ur head dude!

    muchos props

  • this is a joke!!! put baron simms in google and find out about proper drum and bass!!!

  • srry man,but i like this track a lot better then any of those i checked from you

  • ha ha!!!

  • dnb is set at about +- 175 bpm thats "beats per minute"

  • i prefer fruityloops studio but still pretty good

check my stuff out on fl studio

  • Yup I use Reason also. It can be a great way to compose music.

  • i think less crazy drums at the beggining, myabe a little sharper but toned down a little, some compression, tone up that ambience in the synth and take out that annoying sample and this tune would be an absolute banger, id buy it

  • The break is too thin and too fast. I'd much sooner call this "psychocore" or "Drill n' Bass."

Check out anything from Dillanja for proper D&B cues.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA!!!! psychocore? you sir, are a cunt.

  • D&B is all about being a chin-scratching cunt. Without cunts, hosers and douchebags, there never would have been a thriving Drum & Bass scene... like 10 years ago.

Psychocore? How stupid. I meant Nintendocore.

  • i think atarijaguarcore is on the way back in like.

  • Atari Jaguar?! HA HA HA! You're killing me.

    IT'S 64 BITS MAN!

  • =( youre right. i honestly meant sega mastersystemcore x

  • Drums NEED compression, and EQ - A ride wouldnt go a miss either.

Man, that bass after the choo choo sample has ALOT of resonance.

Programming on reason is the way to go, but you need to spend alot of time with it to stop it sounding like reason.

myspace DJ Space (/dj5pace as the URL extension) - all reason.

    Much Love.

    Sean/DJ Space

  • Try to leave some stuff out. It is too full, if you know what I mean.

Synth could be slicker/smoother, if you ask me. Try using a compressor.

  • the idea is cool i guess, but i dont like the whole using dr rex player for the main beat. maybe if you add a better snare and bass drum on top it would sound a bit better.

  • this is just genius...u seem like the kind of person that comes from somewhere called i dunno somwhere with a name like moville and the kind of person that has good diablo skills. judging by this attempt i also think your the kind of person who writes short stories about great fly rebillions.

  • LOL

  • bebobhoy, we are going to get you a plane and fly you out of Colombia. Until then, QUIT TASTING THE PRODUCT!

  • I love a bit of reason - I use 2.5, the sounds are a lot more evolved & drastic. Your attempt is by no means bad, although more structure design is required regards - Daddygiraffe.

  • thanks for making me feel better about myself!

  • Very obviously Reason. Ive been using Reason 1.0 for the last 7 years. I also have Cubase VST but i like my good old reason. Check out "theomaroutfit" on myspace all the music there is done in reason. You have a ways to go, but at least you have an idea of what your doing.

  • this is poor ...rearrange the sample ...nd the sounds are thin ....sounds like a sick duck

    peace

  • Definitely missing the "bass" part of the drum and bass equation.

  • try to find something like a main-melody...

    i give u a tip: listen to a lot of dnb/jungle/breakbeat

listen to some classics like : mickey finn-some justice...or:roni size-brown paper bag

    or...renegade -terrorist

    or ltj bukem-music.....

u know wath i mean...listen to the anthems

  • Sounds good, the bass drum is clashing with a tom i think. Its hard to tell really, but very good attempt. I think your confusing to many effects togheter, i think the best thing to do is have effects that blend then suddenly change. wht program you use to make this? thanks

  • I made it with Propellerheads Reason, mastered with Sound Forge...unfortunately youtube compresses sound quality beyond recognition. Thanks for the feedback!

  • "effects bro`!"

  • this is fucking shit

  • Do you have any videos of your own that I can criticise?

  • sounds like crap

  • i like my d&b at around 165bpm

  • too slow. this tune too fast.

  • Was this made in Reason? I recognise a few of those sounds, but it's pretty decent, it's a little fast though.

    Keep going!

  • tight xD

  • love that synth stab! This has the potential to be a killer tune! LOL

  • im liking the song murray

  • I think is cool, try to give more power and importance to the line basses, i like it.

  • sounds a lot like prodigy.

  • You know nothing about this world

  • Yeah I know,Thats's why I posted this video,so I could get constructive criticism from people who do know more that I do,which I guess is a lot of people.Any tips for me?

  • didn´t sound too bad to me

  • I think you should slow it down a bit - drum n bass should be between 170 and 180 bpm

  • You have a lot of great samples, but the song really lacks "form". If you can come up with a great driving bassline, and slice up those drum samples and make the whole song more "freeform" and less predicable, then you can come up with a killer DnB track! :-)

  • Next time try a lot harder. Bad first atempt but you'll get the hang of, it I'm sure ;) Keep at it dude.

  • maby you should stop attempting drum and bass

  • obviously you didnt read the description, or possibly you dont know the meaning of constructive criticism,or perhaps youre just ignorant and defeatist.

  • it completely out of tempo. Bad mixed and simplistic theme. And yes...I´ve take the time to listen it all.

  • i dont like reason so much...

  • YouTube compresses the crap out of the sound quality - theres a lot there I'm sure we can't hear that you can.

Plus, Reason is tough to master with. All I use is Reason, and you really have to know how to do it for different genres and such.

    Cheers!

  • drumnbass.... with no bassline... or at least i cant hear it... i like the drum loop...

  • Yeah it needs to be mixed better, with a definitive bassline. Thanks!

  • What a shambles!!!! Terrible attempt!

  • Did you use garageband?

  • Nope, this was made completely with Reason.
