@andygjata Still, neither. There are plenty of other lower priced keyboards out there that are better than the X5D or X50. Kurzweil K2000, Korg 01/w, Korg Triton Classic, Korg Triton Le, Alesis QS6, Roland XP50, Korg N364, Korg X3, Korg Wavestation, Yamaha SY-85, Yamaha W7, Yamaha S30. For Metal, a Roland JD-800 would be the absolute business. If you can find and Alesis Fusion, they usually go for a bargain price, and sound phenomenal for the money.
@TaushnikoV Yes, you can put in in mono. Btw, if you are thinking of getting this keyboard because Children of Bodom use one, bear in mind they only use X5Ds as live controllers, no sound comes from them. I think they use VA synths as the sound source.
@Rollinator2 Hi, CoB only use X5Ds as controller keyboards - they don't actually use the sounds from them. You could also check out the Korg Z1 and microkorg as well.
@thepianoman79 The X5 has one set of sounds, and the X5D has two sound banks that can be loaded alternately from memory, one of which is the same one the X5 has.
@thepianoman79 Nope, these sounds are from the X5D's preset bank. The X5 presets are very good as well though. If you're thinking of buying one, then I advise you go for the Korg 01/w instead. It's much, much better.
@Nismology5 man!! i absolutely love to 6' 36'' 7'03'' i gonna buy a x5d in the nexts days because of the sounds ive heard here......so in that church organ ...what you played is part of a song? which one? and i will find that sound with my used korg x5d right? thanks a lot brother
@thepianoman79 Yeah, that church organ sound is the best I've heard on any keyboard I've ever played, including the latest top of the range workstations! Yes it's a preset sound so it should come built into the keyboard when you buy one, unless the previous owner overwrote it, in which case you'll have tho do a factory reset. The song played at 6:36 is improvised btw.
hi, i`m from chilean. can you send me these sound`s??...I have other sound (bank of sound) for change with you......my email is corsario_ok@hotmail.com
Got the X5D already. I like the keys as well as the Pitch & Modulation wheels better than on the Korg X50. Paid 230 Euro for a model in pretty good condition. Just wonder whether I should get a MIDI to USB adapter as well ? It's so much fun to learn playing the keyboard.
A USB to MIDI adapter is a must have, the X5D makes a pretty good midi keyboard. You can also use it to load JayB's trance soundset. I got my X5D for free :P 230 euro sounds pretty good though.
@sloo7047 ...... You will find it is already done in the Combination sound .... go to BASS-Piano .... look at the settings for the Bottom and Higher settings for each Instrument ..... The Lower piano ıs set to about C3 ... . and the BASS Upper is set to B2 .... therefore the sounds are 'split' ........ Or you can get the Sound Tower Edit Pro ... the best 20 bucks I have spent .... this is the editable version ..... Check out one of my videos .... KORG X5D
@Nismology5 Yes.I have the midi connection the right way.Yes,the patches do show in the editor but like I said I get the message"Dump receive not available"as soon as I open the editor.I think the korg itself is set correctly but I might b wrong.I'm not sure about the"midi receive"u're talking about.I could have 1 of the settings wrong on the keyboard but not sure what.I wish this was as easy as the SH-201.I only plug the USB in and play whatever's on the PC.Thanks again for the reply thoguh
Hey guys, I have the x5 and I'm wondering if it's worth it to get the x5D instead. @Nismology5 Thanks for the reply.I dont know what the damn problem is.When I open the 5x sound editor I get "Dump receive is not available".Whatever the hell that means. When I click on midi setup no Korg shows.I ve only had this Korg a few days and Im trying to figure out how to use all the functions.I think I did what I was supposed to do but nothing.. I like this synth and dont need the 01/w.I have an SH-201 too.I was trying to play the patches only using midi w/o having to load'em to the X5
@TransynthMan I really have no idea what the problem could be. are you sure your midi interface is working properly? are you pluging the midi interface's midi out into the X5's midi in? Are the patches showing up in the 05r sound editor on the computer in the first place?
@Nismology5 Also, like I said, when I open the editor and click midi setup, the korg doesn't show but I'm not sure if it should.I know the SH-201 shows if I hook it up. So, I dont know what's wrong.
yep, thanks for detail answer. I thought it was put on the market in the late 90s =)
In any case, factory sounds that you've presented are amazing, because i really like 80s and early 90s music culture...and JayB sounds too. Going to buy it as a "up synth" and think this is a great choice.)
@rockdriveboy Check out the Korg 01/W or the 01/WFD, same sound engine, but adds little things like portamento, aftertouch, internal PSU, metal casing and a bigger screen for about the same price of an X5D on eBay. The 01/W is from about 1992 i believe, and the X5D is from 1996. Some of the X5D's presets are taken from Korg's older keyboards. I think it was one of the last Korg keyboards of the Ai2 generation. Anyway, happy keyboarding ;)
@Nismology5 There is no portamento on Korg 01/W. It has smaller number of waves, but they are of better quality. 01/w has less polyphony (32. vs 64 of X5D). Still, many consider it far better choice than X5D just for it's ultimate professional sound and features.

Thank you very much for such detailed review of X5D sounds!
@rockdriveboy you've got to remember that these are only preset sounds, which were created in the early nineties. I currently have JayB's excellent trance sound bank loaded into mine, along with a load of my own sounds, and it is actually an excellent sounding synth. I agree with you that many of the presets sound dated. Remember, its a synthesiser, so its meant for you to design your own sounds ;)
@djamostlc it was £10 for the key and £5 postage. I had to replace it myself. If you type in korg X5D on Flickr, there are picture of the inside of the keyboard. It's not too had to replace, just unscrew the base, unplug the keybed circuit board from the main board, and the keybed lifts right out :)
I doubt it is a preset, but it wont be too hard to replicate. All it is is a (bad) alto sax sample layered and split with some choir and pad sounds. You will probably be able to make a better one, certainly on the M50 and M3. Another alternative would to get an X5DR rack module to go with your new 76 key board, and control it via MIDI if you MUST have the exact pantomsax csound :).
@PipeFellow3434 the korg X5D was discontinued in 1997! :) look on eBay / craigslist / gumtree for a used one - their average selling price is about £150 - £200 nowadays.
Hello again, you commented the same thing on this video a few months ago, then retracted the remark. Why do you dislike this demo? I ask simply for consructive criticism.
oh did i? sorry. but you should only name/title it "patches or combi sounds", coz a good demo requires skills to use these combinations appropriately, showing where/how to use them and their features. haha it's been months and i can't remember, nice to chat again nismo. goodluck
Those are some great sounds. I am pondering about buying a korg X5D or M1. I currently own a Casio CTK900, do you know if the sounds on an X5D are a lot better quality than a CTK900?
dont get an m1, its from 1989 and the sounds are very outdated, the ctk900 will actually have more realitic acoustic instrument sounds. Plus the M1 goes for high prices because of it's 'retro' value. The X5D had some very interesting sounds, some fantasatic organ and orchesteral sounds, synth pads. Other sounds outdated. check out the casio WK-3000 on ebay, if you watch for a while you can pick one up for under £100. If you want a korg, try to at least get a Korg 01/w
well, the nord lead 2x doesn't use a screen as such, making it the most user friendly for a blind person. They all have very similar interfaces. I'm afraid the Nord lead costs around £900 new, you can get one used for about £600. The novations are only available used and come in 3 different sizes, the K-Station which has 37 keys, the KS4 has 49 keys and the KS5 has 61 keys (same as korg X5D). All three can be had on ebay for under £300
to play the preset sounds, as long as you can play piano keys by touch, but editing? not a chance. The editing is menu based and you need to use the tiny screen. If the blind person in question wants a synthesizer, I suggest an analogue or virtual analogue type synth. one with plenty of knobs or sliders. This way, you can physically hear what your doing to the sound whilst moving a knob by touch.
Soume virtual analogues you may want to consider: Novation KS4, Novation X-Station, Nord Wave, Nord Lead 2X, Access virus Ti, Alesis Ion, there are too many to list, but you want something with as many knobs as possible.
Hey dude, I got a chance to get an X5 here for $150 no shipping costs. But theres a shit ton of X5Ds on ebay for like $300. What should I get? is the difference worth the price?
$150 for an x5 is a very good deal, there is some difference, I think X5D has more polyphony and more memory but I might be wrong. Check out the Yamaha SY85 as well, they go quite cheaply on ebay.
Hey Im having the same problem not getting noise out of combi. Your probably somewhat sick of helping peoplpe figure out stuff, but if you have time I'd reall appreciate it!!! Im super confused...
try reloading the sounds. press 'GLOBAL 'and press 'PAGE +' until screen says '05A PRESET DATA'. Scroll across to 'OK?' and press 'YES' twice so the screen says 'COMPLETED'. then press 'COMBI' and the sounds should play.
you can turn off program protection on GLOBAL 03A. The output source should make no difference to the sounds. Is no sound coming from the keyboard at all?, do the program sounds work?
i like you now dude, you've been kind enough of an artist... sorry i it was quite strong remark, grrr! i was just impatient then... more power to all artists!
They both use the same sound engine, X5D is cheaper, lighter and newer, but has no sequencer. If you don't need the sequencer, get the X5D and save space and money. It also has better polyphony. Yeah the Korg M1, 01/w, x1, x2, x3, x5, x5d, n1, n5, n264 and n364 all use the same AI synthesis, so will sound similar.
I need a sequencer so i think the X3 will be the best choice. Although it has only 32 voices polyphony... But still it's a great workstation for me. Thanks a lot for the help:)
im asking because im really not impressed with most of the sounds ive heard.. well there not bad, and i liked the pianos, but i dont think its capable of making futuristic pop electronic music the sounds are so basic it seems i would have to tweak the fuck outa those sounds to get what i want
well... remember this keyboard is from 1994 (before the advent of thumb drives), so it will not sound 'futuristic' but It is a BEAST of a synth, Sharing it's engine with the legendary Korg M1. The sounds are not basic, the sounds I play are in this vid layer up to 8 programs that are fully filtered and processed through two effects processors. The Orchesteral and etherial sounds are :0 but the pianos and drum kits aren't too good. A tip: dissing inexpensive gear make you sound like a noob ;)
All the editing is menu based, and pretty straight forward. There is software, but it is very basic and not user friendly. There is no USB, only PC to host. The X5D came from the dark ages before USB was common on keyboards :D
Really? I think it sounds FAT. Most of the sounds aren't very realistic, but it really excells at wierd and wonderful etherial sounds. also the orchestral and pipe organ sounds are great. What monitors/amp are you playing it through out of interest?
You're right sounds like 'manimals' and 'zen garden' amuse me at least; though 'bellendra' didn't live up to its name. 'Given' was the wrong choice of word I was borrowing it, played using an 88 key keyboard through a soundcraft spirit studio 16 desk + samson servo 120A amplifier and Tannoy reveal 6(P) monitors. I'm sure I could find a project where it would fit in :) the 88 key board reveals some interesting sounds that are hidden in the first octave.
Thanks Man I love your videos too nice sounds your creating. I use to have a X5 & X5D and i love the demos it was what made me buy it. can you make a video on the demos on it.
Hey, I've been trying to decide between a workstation and a synth for a while now, and am debating between two options.
I found the X5D on Kijiji for 100$, which seemed like a pretty good deal, but after watching your videos, I was really attracted to the Casio WK 3800, which I could spend around 450$ for. Any advice?
well, it depends on your situation. An 'arranger workstation' like the WK-3800 is designed as a one man band instrument, and you have to learn chords and how to use the sequencer (rhythms/auto accompaniment player). If you are looking at playing in a band, then the X5D is an excellent band keyboard with fantastic fat rich sounds that really cut through the mix, but it wont enable you to play whole cover songs by yourself .If you cant afford the WK-3800, check out the casio WK-500 and the WK-200
The X5 and X5D are wonderfull synths but i ended up selling mine to get a Korg MicroX and Korg Legacy Analog & Digital instead.
It is though, a great synthesizer to start playing music with. What i learned was, that if you want to get the most out of any synth, sounds alone won't do.
Practice and learning to play right is what can make a great synth like this one, sound fantastic!
.. Anyway, now i kind of miss it..
========== Great demo! Thank you for posting! ============
ok, just answer me this. korg x5d or korg x50? which one should i buy?

I doubt it is a preset, but it wont be too hard to replicate. All it is is a (bad) alto sax sample layered and split with some choir and pad sounds. You will probably be able to make a better one, certainly on the M50 and M3. Another alternative would to get an X5DR rack module to go with your new 76 key board, and control it via MIDI if you MUST have the exact pantomsax csound :).

Sadly this great keyboard is discontinued...I cant find anywhere that sells new. If anyone can point me in the direction...please..
PipeFellow3434 2 years ago
@PipeFellow3434 the korg X5D was discontinued in 1997! :) look on eBay / craigslist / gumtree for a used one - their average selling price is about £150 - £200 nowadays.
Nismology5 2 years ago
holy shit i was gonna get a d50 but these are exactly the sounds im looking for - plus it is cheaper. woohoo
awayfromhome 2 years ago
Does anyone has the X5DR?
The X5DR is the X5 or the X3 module version?
depechetosco 2 years ago
the X5DR is the rack version of the X5D (X5D is the same as an X5 but with twice the ROM and polyphony)
Nismology5 2 years ago
I own a Korg triton and i must say the sounds are similar.
Just seen one of these on gumtree for £120! I am sorely tempted after hearing some of the patches here.
Thanks for posting this demo

Hello again, you commented the same thing on this video a few months ago, then retracted the remark. Why do you dislike this demo? I ask simply for consructive criticism.
Nismology5 2 years ago
oh did i? sorry. but you should only name/title it "patches or combi sounds", coz a good demo requires skills to use these combinations appropriately, showing where/how to use them and their features. haha it's been months and i can't remember, nice to chat again nismo. goodluck

Those are some great sounds. I am pondering about buying a korg X5D or M1. I currently own a Casio CTK900, do you know if the sounds on an X5D are a lot better quality than a CTK900?
Cheers.
unknownburglar 2 years ago
dont get an m1, its from 1989 and the sounds are very outdated, the ctk900 will actually have more realitic acoustic instrument sounds.

Whats the diff between the x5 and x5D?
GanEdenAustralia 2 years ago
this expander will work good with an Axiom61?
17OfSpades 2 years ago
The korg X5D is not an 'expander' whatever that is, it is a keyboard synthesizer, the axiom is just a controller, what would be the point?
Nismology5 2 years ago
Thanks for your help. Which do you think contanes the most knobs/sliders/buttons? and how much would I be looking to pay?
djoutrage18 2 years ago
well, the nord lead 2x doesn't use a screen as such, making it the most user friendly for a blind person. All three can be had on ebay for under £300
Nismology5 2 years ago
How accessable are the 5d's for blind people? what can/can't you do on them if you can't see?
djoutrage18 2 years ago
to play the preset sounds, as long as you can play piano keys by touch, but editing? not a chance. The editing is menu based and you need to use the tiny screen. If the blind person in question wants a synthesizer, I suggest an analogue or virtual analogue type synth. one with plenty of knobs or sliders. This way, you can physically hear what your doing to the sound whilst moving a knob by touch.
Nismology5 2 years ago
Soume virtual analogues you may want to consider: Novation KS4, Novation X-Station, Nord Wave, Nord Lead 2X, Access virus Ti, Alesis Ion, there are too many to list, but you want something with as many knobs as possible.
Nismology5 2 years ago
Hey dude, I got a chance to get an X5 here for $150 no shipping costs. But theres a shit ton of X5Ds on ebay for like $300. What should I get? is the difference worth the price?
kochonlebest 2 years ago
$150 for an x5 is a very good deal, there is some difference, I think X5D has more polyphony and more memory but I might be wrong. Check out the Yamaha SY85 as well, they go quite cheaply on ebay.
Nismology5 2 years ago
Knowing I'm only going to get it(x5) as a Controller, used with a Roland JV 2080, I guess i shouldn't bother with the X5D, right?
kochonlebest 2 years ago
well, why not get a dedicated midi controller like the M-audio axiom or the E-MU xboard?
Nismology5 2 years ago
Simply because I like the overall look of it, and the key response. And If I had to go with a dedicated one, I'd pick the microX I guess
kochonlebest 2 years ago
fair enough :)

no, its just bad improvising :)
Nismology5 2 years ago
how did you get the sound at 0:49 ?
i really really like that and i just bought an X5D
wackojackocrazy 2 years ago
its a preset combi sound called 'warriors' It should be on the keyboard when you buy it.
outr of interest, when you turn the keyboard on is the first sound you see called 'StarBurst' or 'SolarFlare' ?
Nismology5 2 years ago
'SolarFlare'
but i seem to not being able to get noises out of combi
im lost and i dont have the manual :S
wackojackocrazy 2 years ago
try reloading the sounds. press 'GLOBAL 'and press 'PAGE +' until screen says '05A PRESET DATA'. Scroll across to 'OK?' and press 'YES' twice so the screen says 'COMPLETED'. then press 'COMBI' and the sounds should play.
Nismology5 2 years ago
okay, i tried that and it still didnt work :S
would it make a difference if i was only running an output to computer speakers? instead of an input/output on a P.A ?
wackojackocrazy 2 years ago
and it keeps saying 'MEMORY PROTECTED' and flashes
:S help please!
wackojackocrazy 2 years ago
you can turn off program protection on GLOBAL 03A. The output source should make no difference to the sounds. Is no sound coming from the keyboard at all?, do the program sounds work?
Nismology5 2 years ago
program sounds work all fine!

any links?

you can get the M1 vst, sounds veryu similar as the X5D uses the same sound engine as the M1.
here is the link (with spaces so i can write it in the comment box)
kvraudio. com/ get/ 1902. html
Nismology5 2 years ago
Not true. M1 uses AI synthesis, X5D uses improved AI2 synthesis with better effects and has more polyphony and stuff.
dragonsagoth666 2 years ago
Also, samples are not entirely the same between M1 and X5D, even those with same names don't sound the same.
IMHO, X5D is very underrated, but AI2 synth that everybody needs to have is N364 AND N5EX.

Great Work:) Very good sounds and playing:) Don't you know if the x3 souns similar to x5D? I'm about to buy x3 and i'd like to know this...
Myszy61 2 years ago
They both use the same sound engine, X5D is cheaper, lighter and newer, but has no sequencer. If you don't need the sequencer, get the X5D and save space and money. It also has better polyphony. Yeah the Korg M1, 01/w, x1, x2, x3, x5, x5d, n1, n5, n264 and n364 all use the same AI synthesis, so will sound similar.
Nismology5 2 years ago
I need a sequencer so i think the X3 will be the best choice. Although it has only 32 voices polyphony... But still it's a great workstation for me. Thanks a lot for the help:)

O.o great sounds i want one of these o.O
danny15593 2 years ago
im asking because im really not impressed with most of the sounds ive heard.. well there not bad, and i liked the pianos, but i dont think its capable of making futuristic pop electronic music the sounds are so basic it seems i would have to tweak the fuck outa those sounds to get what i want
akarc24 2 years ago
well... remember this keyboard is from 1994 (before the advent of thumb drives), so it will not sound 'futuristic' but It is a BEAST of a synth, Sharing it's engine with the legendary Korg M1.
Nismology5 2 years ago
is it easy to tweak any sound on the keyboard or do you need to save it on a thumb drive and do your tweaking on the computer?
akarc24 2 years ago
All the editing is menu based, and pretty straight forward. There is software, but it is very basic and not user friendly. There is no USB, only PC to host. The X5D came from the dark ages before USB was common on keyboards :D
Nismology5 2 years ago
o nvm, i thought this was the x50 not the x5D (D and O look the FUCKING SAME)
haha. btw i am a newb fool!!

Can you play this just through the piano, or does it require an amp?
meissner07 2 years ago
firstly its a keyboard, not a piano. Yes you do have to use an amp or some kind of external speakers.
Nismology5 2 years ago
I'm not very impressed with the X5DR (rackmout version) that I was given I'm afraid

DeathSlayer2 2 years ago
Really? I think it sounds FAT. Most of the sounds aren't very realistic, but it really excells at wierd and wonderful etherial sounds. also the orchestral and pipe organ sounds are great. What monitors/amp are you playing it through out of interest?
Nismology5 2 years ago
You're right sounds like 'manimals' and 'zen garden' amuse me at least; though 'bellendra' didn't live up to its name. 'Given' was the wrong choice of word I was borrowing it, played using an 88 key keyboard through a soundcraft spirit studio 16 desk + samson servo 120A amplifier and Tannoy reveal 6(P) monitors. I'm sure I could find a project where it would fit in :) the 88 key board reveals some interesting sounds that are hidden in the first octave.
Nice vid
Janice :)

Maybe it's the spirit. I even dread when I have to use that desk for live sound

BTW, I'm a big fan of your keyboard vids!
Nismology5 2 years ago
Thanks Man I love your videos too nice sounds your creating. I use to have a X5 & X5D and i love the demos it was what made me buy it. can you make a video on the demos on it.
KMNKeybordValt 2 years ago
Hey, I've been trying to decide between a workstation and a synth for a while now, and am debating between two options.
I found the X5D on Kijiji for 100$, which seemed like a pretty good deal, but after watching your videos, I was really attracted to the Casio WK 3800, which I could spend around 450$ for. Any advice?
oliverbm20 2 years ago
well, it depends on your situation.
Nismology5 2 years ago
The X5 and X5D are wonderfull synths but i ended up selling mine to get a Korg MicroX and Korg Legacy Analog & Digital instead.
It is though, a great synthesizer to start playing music with. What i learned was, that if you want to get the most out of any synth, sounds alone won't do.
Practice and learning to play right is what can make a great synth like this one, sound fantastic!
.. Anyway, now i kind of miss it..
