Tae Kwon Do: Maureen's Black Belt (and she passed)

OK I figured this one out guys ...its the poome grade. You only have to do the first five TaeGeuks (Upto Taegeuk Oh Jang). It's a poome grade 'black belt' not a DAN grade. It's eqivalent to Blue Belt in WTF. I still don't know what the Fans are all about...maybe its just something she wanted to do for her test. I asked if I could demonstrate breaking for my DAN grade (to show the other grades). Maybe she got extra cred for the show. I dunno. She is 52 so hats off to her for getting this far!

for my black belt I had to do: 100 push-ups 60+ sit ups in 1 minute Break a house brick with any hand technique jog 2 miles with 2 brick in each hand without dropping them break 3 x 1 inch pieces of wood with any kick at sandang spar 3 opponents red belt or above ALL 8 patterns 5 different hansu-shil Hanbod and Dubon Deryon (5 fixed 3 open) and I had to get out of being floored (held down on the ground) both on my front and back... WTF is this???

What's with the fans, is she taking the mickey? I just passed my black belt and it was all proper taekwondo. I train in TAGB ITF style Taekwondo, this looks like a very different style.

Been 10 years in South Korea as a TKD instructor (I'm British) and this truly shocking. Learnt JidoKwan Chundokwan, Han Ma Dong , ITF, WTF. Got black belts in all of them apart from HanMaDong (take it in the nxt 2 months) and Chundokwan.

I've prob got the most 1st DAN (and some higher too) black belts in many different styles of TKD. I agree I don't know what the h#ll this is!

Seriously, not trying to be harsh or anything, but if you're gonna be getting a black belt, you should know what's in the curriculum of the martial art that you're learning, and you should demonstrate some sort of mastery of the techniques and a level of physical fitness.

Judging from this video that's probably what happened. First or all, what on earth is she doing with those fans. Fans are not at all part of the taekwondo curriculum or by any means a practical weapon for self defense. Second, the kicks in that form were really half assed. No power or finesse...
