Um... I don't know what you call them... Yes, they are both variations on a ninth chord. The first one is (shifting down a couple of tones) G-F#-B-D-A; the second one is G-D-A-B-F#. Apparently they are both 'major ninth' chords (according to wikipedia).

I made up the guitar arrangement...

I probably picked up these types of chords from listening to Django Reinhardt when I was a kid... but having never played in a jazz band or anything, I didn't put a lot of thought into what they were called.
