4:20 - Every time I hear this beautiful music from Vangelis, I think about Carl Sagan and I imagine him floating in space, his hands around our planet earth, saying to us, softly and gently: "Don't worry, everything is fine. You are not alone". I know, it sounds childish but this is my very naive homage for our friend Carl... :)
Carl Sagan - "Our collective free time needs to shift as much as possible to education. Whether you're a young student or finished school long ago, get out to the library whenever you can and work hard to learn everything you can about this world. Each individual and society will benefit from being able to solve more problems and make better decisions. Education is an amazing discovery process that repays you endlessly."
The way i see it and will see for the rest of my life, the only answer i can get is that we are the first intelligent race in this universe. Nuff said.
Am I the only who doesn't care about food, clothing, paying the bills etc as much as space, interstellar travel etc?
I have so many issues and personal problems to deal with but I don't care. I just want to go to space, even if it means certain death. Sometimes its painful.
@ZaaaaaM7 To be fair, they might not be scared of our weapons, but of our aggresive nature. Maybe they advanced so much because they only knew peace, and so a planet where kids play pranks on each other, teenagers rebel against their parents, adults go to war etc., even if they don't have the same technology, such a society might cause more harm than the strongest weapon in the universe.
@Kibate - What about this - If there are advanced E.T. civilizations out there that have managed to monitor our feeble radio signals & make some sense out of them, assuming they're quick studies & can get a rudimentary understanding on our language. Then they conclude that this planet is a BIG ** lunatic asylum **, & they should stay away because we're a bad influence.
yh wouldn't it take ages 4 radio signals to travel thru space ? well im sure we dont know everything about space itself. after all u cant detect something without a detector LMAO

It takes a really long time to get a message 200 lightyears away. So we must wait until it gets there and they send an answer back. So we should start waiting after several hundred years. I dont want to wait several hundred years.
I think if a species intelligent enough to ever reach earth, and come in contact with humans; they would realize everything is deeply connected, and therefore would make peace with us. Humans are still on the "dominate the land and people" mindset. If humans ever really want to explore the universe, we need everyone to realize we're all one species, and we should be taking care of each other.
1 is not a prime number as far as I know. But other than that I am a fan of Carl Sagan. Had similar ideas to me although I do not think that there are millions of civilizations in our galaxy...maybe 5-10 in my opinion.
I'm not sure why you got voted down for correctly pointing out that 1 isn't a prime number.
I really like Carl Sagan, but I think even here he understates the problems of the size of the cosmos and another question (which no-one ever thinks about) which is the amount of time a civilization would have to stick around for us to meet them. Human civilization has only existed for about 10,000 years, that's 1/500,000-th the age of the earth. Even if aliens existed, do they exist *now*?
I do not know either why they voted me down...a bunch of ignorants they are :D
well I think that the lifespam of a civilization depends on several issues. The industrial revolution which we are in recently. So far as a civilization manages to expand to other planets it gains great survavibility. Because from that point on there is a little possibility for a disaster to happen on all of the colonized worlds at the same time.
Just think of some of the junk these other planets, light years away, will have been receiving from us. Pop Idol, Big Brother, Iraq War coverage....my god! No wonder they don't bother getting in touch.
Though SETI and SETI@home in a planet grid level is a very ambitious notion, its a very primitive technology that we have been using for the last 100 years out of the millions years of the excistance of possible planets out there.
OMG..WOW!!! <<<----Not @ the possibile existence of extraterrestrial life, that's pretty obvious, but @ the unnaturally borderline self-mutilation inducing monotone voice of the narrator. OUT OF THIS WORLD!
OMG. WOW!!! <<<---- @ the jackass. The man was WAY smarter than you, and my personal hero... So stfu...k pumpkin? Jealousy? Is that why people make fun of other people...? I don't get it, but whatever... Anyway... he may not have had the "nicest" voice... but what does that have to do with anything anyway? It's not the delivery system that matters... it's the message.
They send one powerfull enough signal to reach one location. If anyone there, they will probably not be listening for a signal from one specific location of our solar system, or even have their listening equipment turned on all the time; like we dont either.
He's always saying, "they" and "we". "We" don't destroy ourselves, the dumb people do. "We" didn't make scientific discoveries, a few, or one, smart guy did. "We" aren't violent and irrational; just the people who were born with a brain problem. "We" didn't go to the moon. A group of smart people pulled that off. "Mankind" didn't come up with the printing press, Gutenberg did. Much of mankind has been getting dragged through history on the coat tails of their betters.
Now that I agree with you on. This is why it is so difficult to engage most people in critical thinking. Only the few truly intelligent people such as the likes of Carl Sagan, Einstein, Asimov and Shermer really get it and help translate it for us.
I think the best of us have this tendency to think of the rest of us as being better than we are... so they talk to us as if we're able to get it. That's why Ralph Nader will never get elected to diddly. He doesn't lie, he doesn't even prevaricate when it is in our best interest. So ppl. think he's a freak.
What scares me is that it took thousands, hundreds of thousands of years of bloody violent history before mankind worked out free democracy and human rights. This seems to be pretty substantial evidence that civilization isn't in their nature and it's only technology (printing press) that allowed the smart few to have more say in the structure of things, as oppose to the powerful... Still, ya gotta laugh. ;)
Sure they have, although one or two have been left out... the problem is that most humans aren't really all that interested in them, not really. Ppl. don't have a problem with slavery as long as they're comfortable. They draw the line at beatings.
My post refers to the long history that took place before America was founded. I didn't say the whole world has human rights. Oh wait, this is the internet.
(to your original reply to defdeezy's human rights post):
To say that most humans don't have problems with slavery or aren't interested in human rights is ludicrous. The slavery abolitionist movement--people just kind of did that for fun? Same with the civil rights movement or the womens suffrage movement--those were just lackadaisical occurrences?
History shows that those movements are mostly confined to the middle/upper middle class. Why isn't it typical for ppl. to think about it? Why isn't there a common objection to wage slavery? Why is 90% of tv programming painfully insipid and fatuous and lowest common denominator? Why do politicians manipulate as oppose to communicate? You need to ask the whole world why they think most folks are just wondering through life waiting for next wks episode of their fav tv program.
We do destroy ourselves, even if it is the "dumb" people--we allow it to happen and continue by not intervening or preventing whatever it is. Why do you think Sagan always emphasized the possible destruction of our civilization by a nuclear war? Or was he just commenting that we as a species should just sit back and let the technocrats do the work and save the day?
"We" do destroy ourselves and not a "few idiots"; Sagan always talked about the possibility of a nuclear war because the few idiots are allowed to play games with the world, while "We" stand by.
You have it the wrong way round. I never said, "few idiots". Neither did Sagan. Smart ppl. are vastly, vastly out numbered by average and below average bears.
"It is unfortunate that the people who know best how to run the country are too busy cutting hair and driving cabs." - George Burns
My mistake, "dumb" people. And privileged people usually take advantage of opportunities when presented w/them--so I dont disagree that there are few "smart" people.
"I am somehow less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops." -Stephen Jay Gould
Ok, lets say that the average person was as smart as carl sagan. That would mean that there would be a few out there vastly outnumbered by the average folk as smart as carl sagan. The fact is, people are very smart, that is all I am trying to say.
Then why is 90% of commercial tv programming painfully insipid? Why do tv commercials and advertisements talk to people like they're emotional robots and childish idiots? Why do politicians manipulate emotionally, instead of communicate to the intellect? And why does the average bear stand for it? And why is the most popular use of YT looking at videos of Paris Hilton?
Hmm, what if the other civilization evolved such that intelligence was a common trait instead of a rare one like it is on earth; then that would be why they didn't self destruct and getting their signal wouldn't necessarily mean anything for "us". Just sayin'.
Carl clearly changed his mind about life in the universe because I heard him say that we (mankind) are almost certainly the first life in the universe.
People will laugh at some of my comments but thats what humans are like. They laughed at Galileo, they laughed at the thought of flight, then reaching the moon ect. Its the same old same old.
Imagine what a civilization 1 million years ahead of ours thinks of humans and their primitive sciences. 100 years ago the fastest thing in the sky was a hot air balloon. They thought if you went any faster than 30mph you would disintegrate. Now we are travelling at 40,000 in space. Science will keep moving at a fater and faster rate until we can travel interdimensionaly or at super luminal speed even though its against our 'present understanding'.
We have something Carl Sagan doesnt. New Cern discoveries and advancments in zero field gravity and cold fission propulsion thanks to the U.S black projects which are 50 years beyond anything you can imagine. Thats what the head of Lockhead Skunkworks said before he died. VROOOOOOMMMMMMM :)
Dawkins is deluded about himself! Sagan was a giant in comparison to Dawkins. Sagan believed that humans are the first inteligent life in the univers and that one day we would go out and populate the universe.
That is exactly what Sagan didn't believe. He kept saying it is statistically certain the Milky Way is full of civilisations "far more advanced than us", who would for certain be benign because high-science societies advsance beyond war. As even his biographer Keay Davidson noticed, Sagan had no evidence for this extraordinary claim, it was his equivalent of God, dreaming of help from the sky.
fivish, There's a difference, Carl Sagan had the COSMOS series, Dawkins does not, not that that's any guarantee, have you ever heard of Donald Johansson? Carl, unlike Richard didn't spend his time saying things that are unpopular. COSMOS was hope, and a dream, Richard Dawkins is the low after the high
Why must you demean Richard Dawkins? Have you read The Selfish Gene? Or Blind Watchmaker? The guy is a genius and was revolutionary in his day. I remember taking a course in Evolutionary Biology in college and selfish gene was required. It was radical and opened the door on Sociobiology, Naked Ape etc. He played a huge part in moving that field forward. He's not as passionate and compelling as Carl, but he is still a great contributer IMO.
Muskratsrule, yes Indeed I have read The Selfish Gene and Unweaving the Rainbow. I do not doubt his genius at all. I was merely expressing the opinion that compared to Carl Sagan who talks about Aliens and space travel sociobiology is downright depressing in comparison.
I respect your opinion and agree that Astrobiology is probably a more interesting, exciting field, but disagree entirely that sociobiology is depressing. How so? I think its entirely revealing and casts a bright light on who we are. We are mildly polygamous primates. I personally delight in the truth that I'm a naked ape. Its very honest.
Although Carl Sagan is obviously a great mind I think he's missing a few points...What if they can travel faster than light? or are from one of the other ten dimensions CERN has discovered? What if NASA are lying under instruction of the CIA? What if...theyre already here and dont want to communicate through radio signals and would rather watch the 'children' playing ..ie.. humans.
Leonard: Aliens dont have to break the laws of physics to travel here.
There are more advanced physics out there which we havent come to yet. Thats why we cant yet explain the moment of creation. But it happened..hence ...there has to be more advanced sciences we have not yet discovered.. Only the primeval arogance of a human would presume that they know it all.
"Ethic of non-interference." He just may have been one of the first to conceive the "Prime Directive"! Never heard of it? Watch Star Trek. Carl was a genius.
now if you started reading this dont stop its really scarey!ok send this to five other videos in 143 minutes. When you are done press F6 and your crushes name will apear on the screen in big letters this is weird because it does work.If you break this chance you wont have a crush in the next five years
So according to Sagan we are all just made up of random chances and mutations. No intelligence required. But to look for life on other planets we are to search for intelligent signals and design. Does that make sense?
yes, it makes perfect sense if you stop and think about how old and big the universe is and how new the earth is in comparision with other planets. We are basically the new kids on the block. Being the new kids on the block we would have more to learn. We can't be the only living things in the whole universe, that would be arrogant thinking. There is this extremely large universe out there and it's so interesting and wonderful
I don't give a shit what you people think. Extraterrestrial life form does exsist. Many of us want to believe but are always doubted by videos that people make that turn out to be a hoax which.. people love doing that to fuck with us. Im not saying all are hoaxes but some are. I just know that we are not alone and we do not live in peace. We hate, critisise and do a lot of stupid things to cause harm to one another around but to this planet too.
remenber our tecnology made major advances through war. if they are more advance then we are, I don't think they are any more peaceful then us. if they DO some I don't think it'll be for saying hello.
but you must also realise that if they are so advanced there weapons would be soooo advanced that they would have wiped them self out if they didn't find a way to peace
I dont think it's a good idea send out a message... we dont know what is up there!! it can be out there nothing... but... if there's something... they can be very friendly or... a predatory civilization... As we do not know what is up there... and we do not know how defende our selfs from a hipotetical advanced civilization seeking natural resources... we should be carefull... :)
Sagan WAS in our generation. He only died a few weeks ago, you know. But I agree with that I think you mean - we need more people like him, to carry on the work. In any case, thank you for putting up this clip! Awesome stuff.
Oh, crazy! I was going my wikipedia's entry on him, which said Dec 20 2006... which obviously was a type, and has been fixed now. Sorry about that. It's odd that he's getting so much attention on youtube in the last short while, though. Maybe because it's the 10 year anniversary of his death.
shallow as in intellect or little as in intellect. I mean c'mon, you make a statement like "growing athiest culture on youtube" and dont expect to be called on it? on a carl fucking sagan video? I suppose you know all about the REAL GOD and think the rest of us are not "in the know", whatever, haniflfxerexel
And you must be gay for Jesus... I'm an atheist, and I think Carl Sagan did a lot of great work. I don't worship him, I don't make any assumptions that he has supernatural abilities, and I don't think he was omnipotent. Try to refrain from making ignorant comments in the future please.

Had similar ideas to me although I do not think that there are millions of civilizations in our galaxy...maybe 5-10 in my opinion.
k3lp00 3 years ago
I'm not sure why you got voted down for correctly pointing out that 1 isn't a prime number.
I really like Carl Sagan, but I think even here he understates the problems of the size of the cosmos and another question (which no-one ever thinks about) which is the amount of time a civilization would have to stick around for us to meet them. Human civilization has only existed for about 10,000 years, that's 1/500,000-th the age of the earth. Even if aliens existed, do they exist *now*?
plevyman 3 years ago
I do not know either why they voted me down...a bunch of ignorants they are :D
well I think that the lifespam of a civilization depends on several issues. The industrial revolution which we are in recently. So far as a civilization manages to expand to other planets it gains great survavibility. Because from that point on there is a little possibility for a disaster to happen on all of the colonized worlds at the same time.
k3lp00 3 years ago
If the question of why we are watching him instead of you ever comes up you now have your answer.

I do. But what exactly is your point?

Just think of some of the junk these other planets, light years away, will have been receiving from us. Pop Idol, Big Brother, Iraq War coverage....my god! No wonder they don't bother getting in touch.

Though SETI and SETI@home in a planet grid level is a very ambitious notion, its a very primitive technology that we have been using for the last 100 years out of the millions years of the excistance of possible planets out there.

Much of mankind has been getting dragged through history on the coat tails of their betters.
prayfertrey 4 years ago
Now that I agree with you on. This is why it is so difficult to engage most people in critical thinking. Only the few truly intelligent people such as the likes of Carl Sagan, Einstein, Asimov and Shermer really get it and help translate it for us.
aikiboy1111111 4 years ago
I think the best of us have this tendency to think of the rest of us as being better than we are... so they talk to us as if we're able to get it. That's why Ralph Nader will never get elected to diddly. He doesn't lie, he doesn't even prevaricate when it is in our best interest. So ppl. think he's a freak.
prayfertrey 4 years ago
Agreed. We're a high quantity, low quality species, with very few diamonds in the rough. Lucky us.
Ophiuchus24 4 years ago
What scares me is that it took thousands, hundreds of thousands of years of bloody violent history before mankind worked out free democracy and human rights. This seems to be pretty substantial evidence that civilization isn't in their nature and it's only technology (printing press) that allowed the smart few to have more say in the structure of things, as oppose to the powerful... Still, ya gotta laugh. ;)
prayfertrey 4 years ago
human rights? they haven't been worked out quite yet...
defdeezy 4 years ago
Sure they have, although one or two have been left out... the problem is that most humans aren't really all that interested in them, not really. Ppl. don't have a problem with slavery as long as they're comfortable. They draw the line at beatings.
prayfertrey 4 years ago
you think they've been worked out?
haha. dude. bro.
take a trip to a third world country (i was born in one). then tell me that they've been worked out.
defdeezy 4 years ago
My post refers to the long history that took place before America was founded. I didn't say the whole world has human rights. Oh wait, this is the internet.
prayfertrey 4 years ago
not in america either dude. katrina victims? detroit? washington, dc? visit an american ghetto sometime, or a white-trash trailer park.
defdeezy 4 years ago
I'm sure we haven't "arrived"; which is beside my point, dude.
prayfertrey 4 years ago
(to your original reply to defdeezy's human rights post):
To say that most humans don't have problems with slavery or aren't interested in human rights is ludicrous. The slavery abolitionist movement--people just kind of did that for fun? Same with the civil rights movement or the womens suffrage movement--those were just lackadaisical occurrences?
IntelligentHoodlum 4 years ago
History shows that those movements are mostly confined to the middle/upper middle class. Why isn't it typical for ppl. to think about it? Why isn't there a common objection to wage slavery? Why is 90% of tv programming painfully insipid and fatuous and lowest common denominator? Why do politicians manipulate as oppose to communicate? You need to ask the whole world why they think most folks are just wondering through life waiting for next wks episode of their fav tv program.
prayfertrey 4 years ago 2
yes, i agree with you here.
defdeezy 4 years ago
We do destroy ourselves, even if it is the "dumb" people--we allow it to happen and continue by not intervening or preventing whatever it is. Why do you think Sagan always emphasized the possible destruction of our civilization by a nuclear war? Or was he just commenting that we as a species should just sit back and let the technocrats do the work and save the day?
IntelligentHoodlum 4 years ago
I wasn't able to make heard or tails of that.
prayfertrey 4 years ago
"We" do destroy ourselves and not a "few idiots"; Sagan always talked about the possibility of a nuclear war because the few idiots are allowed to play games with the world, while "We" stand by.
IntelligentHoodlum 4 years ago 2
You have it the wrong way round. I never said, "few idiots". Neither did Sagan. Smart ppl. are vastly, vastly out numbered by average and below average bears.
"It is unfortunate that the people who know best how to run the country are too busy cutting hair and driving cabs." - George Burns
prayfertrey 4 years ago
My mistake, "dumb" people. And privileged people usually take advantage of opportunities when presented w/them--so I dont disagree that there are few "smart" people.
"I am somehow less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops." -Stephen Jay Gould
IntelligentHoodlum 4 years ago
Ok, lets say that the average person was as smart as carl sagan. That would mean that there would be a few out there vastly outnumbered by the average folk as smart as carl sagan. The fact is, people are very smart, that is all I am trying to say.
EthanJM 4 years ago
Then why is 90% of commercial tv programming painfully insipid? Why do tv commercials and advertisements talk to people like they're emotional robots and childish idiots? Why do politicians manipulate emotionally, instead of communicate to the intellect? And why does the average bear stand for it? And why is the most popular use of YT looking at videos of Paris Hilton?
prayfertrey 4 years ago 23
Hmm, what if the other civilization evolved such that intelligence was a common trait instead of a rare one like it is on earth; then that would be why they didn't self destruct and getting their signal wouldn't necessarily mean anything for "us". Just sayin'.
prayfertrey 4 years ago
Carl clearly changed his mind about life in the universe because I heard him say that we (mankind) are almost certainly the first life in the universe.

KJS72 4 years ago
We have something Carl Sagan doesnt. New Cern discoveries and advancments in zero field gravity and cold fission propulsion thanks to the U.S black projects which are 50 years beyond anything you can imagine. Thats what the head of Lockhead Skunkworks said before he died. VROOOOOOMMMMMMM :)

Dawkins is deluded about himself! Sagan was a giant in comparison to Dawkins. Sagan believed that humans are the first inteligent life in the univers and that one day we would go out and populate the universe.
fivish 4 years ago
That is exactly what Sagan didn't believe. He kept saying it is statistically certain the Milky Way is full of civilisations "far more advanced than us", who would for certain be benign because high-science societies advsance beyond war. As even his biographer Keay Davidson noticed, Sagan had no evidence for this extraordinary claim, it was his equivalent of God, dreaming of help from the sky.
maurice 4 years ago
fivish, There's a difference, Carl Sagan had the COSMOS series, Dawkins does not, not that that's any guarantee, have you ever heard of Donald Johansson? Carl, unlike Richard didn't spend his time saying things that are unpopular. COSMOS was hope, and a dream, Richard Dawkins is the low after the high
xKCBEx 4 years ago
Why must you demean Richard Dawkins? Have you read The Selfish Gene? Or Blind Watchmaker? The guy is a genius and was revolutionary in his day. I remember taking a course in Evolutionary Biology in college and selfish gene was required. It was radical and opened the door on Sociobiology, Naked Ape etc. He played a huge part in moving that field forward. He's not as passionate and compelling as Carl, but he is still a great contributer IMO.
muskratsrule 4 years ago
Muskratsrule, yes Indeed I have read The Selfish Gene and Unweaving the Rainbow. I do not doubt his genius at all. I was merely expressing the opinion that compared to Carl Sagan who talks about Aliens and space travel sociobiology is downright depressing in comparison.
xKCBEx 4 years ago
I respect your opinion and agree that Astrobiology is probably a more interesting, exciting field, but disagree entirely that sociobiology is depressing. How so? I think its entirely revealing and casts a bright light on who we are. We are mildly polygamous primates. I personally delight in the truth that I'm a naked ape. Its very honest.

Leonard: Aliens dont have to break the laws of physics to travel here.
There are more advanced physics out there which we havent come to yet. Thats why we cant yet explain the moment of creation. But it happened..hence ...there has to be more advanced sciences we have not yet discovered.. Only the primeval arogance of a human would presume that they know it all.

infinityspiralsout 4 years ago
yes, it makes perfect sense if you stop and think about how old and big the universe is and how new the earth is in comparision with other planets. We are basically the new kids on the block. Being the new kids on the block we would have more to learn. We can't be the only living things in the whole universe, that would be arrogant thinking. There is this extremely large universe out there and it's so interesting and wonderful
