Someone in here mentioned the look on Doc's face. Did you see the look on Tom Politzer's face. He was shaking his head. That fact is the only other Tenor Sax player that TOP had that had a pretty good altissimo was Norbert Stachel and even he was limited to what he could do compared to Lenny. Lenny is in a class all his own. He does things on a sax that no human should be able to do. Unbelievable!!! I just wish I was there to see it in person. Lenny owns Knock Yourself Out.
I like to think I am good at what I do. And so, it is doubly humiliating to be reminded of just how incompetent and uncreative you are at what you do for a living while so thoroughly enjoying the agent of your humiliation.
Ali, Gretsky, Frank Lloyd Wright, DaVinci, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Sinatra, the list of the truly GREAT could go on and on. They all possessed a talent/gift which at the end of the day escapes description. I must add Lenny Pickett to that list.
Harmonically,Melodically,Technically........If anybody out there would like to add to these words we may be able to come up with one word that describes this monstrous Band.
I have the live in Oakland recording (on cassette tape!) from the late 60's of the band doing this tune and LP ripping a solo...his circular breathing solo on one note is still a classic I have used in my teaching many times over...not always how many notes you play...it's always HOW you play them! LP is a genious!
4:14 - the water's boiling! :D Amazing Pickett - wish i saw that in person! wow!!

2:03. the power of the saxophone altissimo had been too great for any mortal to use to its fullest. Then Lenny Pickett was born.
