  • fun fact, this fella is carlton from the fresh prince's grandfather!

  • Jimmy Soul had a #1 hit with "If You wanna be Happy" but the writers do not include Roaring Lion.

  • This is actually the version recorded with the Muttoo brothers, around 1946-48. I don't believe there ever was a 1934 recording. Liner notes are not always to be trusted.

  • @castor3331 … I mean, there WAS a 1934 recording, but I don't think it has ever been released on CD. In this Muttoo version, you can hear the new, jumpy, post-WW2-style, premonitioning where calypso would head in the 50's.

  • This is great! Like Jimmy Souls version too but couldn't have that without this so 'respect'.

  • Sorry, I should've said my favorite version not the best, as that's all personal taste. I prefer mento records over the old calypsos, so my opinion is obviously biased towards that sound. I like the Gerald Clark recording sessions, as they are usually heavily Jazz/Mento influenced for mainstream America. I'll try and post a direct digital transfer but for now here's the version I have on 78... playing on my jukebox.

  • Cool song! Never heard of it but I like it!

  • under 5 points

  • This is not the "best" version of Ugly Woman that The Lion did. It sounds way too fast! I have this song on a Musicraft 78 from the early '40s; The Lion with Gerald Clark and his Original Calypsos - Fan Me Saga Boy / Ugly Woman. Trust me, thats a MUCH better version. I also have a Mento version on a Times Record 78 by The Jamaican Calypsonians with vocals by Hubert Porter. His is not a cover version, its actually quite different and argues "if you want misery just give an ugly woman matrimony".

  • @TheRealDJGIBS

If you have the "best" version, then please be sure to post it..

Keep in mind that Lion himself was never a fan of the slower style of calypso and always prefered lyrics delivered in a feverish pace..

  • @TheRealDJGIBS Man You must go back to the Day! Are you Harry Belafonte? Cab Calloway? Jack LaLane? Strohm Thurman? Abe Lincoln, Frederick Douglas?

  • This is cool, but sorry, I like Jimmy Soul's cover better. It sounds happier, and it's much catchier than the original.

  • @BiroZombie Jimmy Soul definitely did do a great version. I just didn't know until a few days ago that this version even existed. I like it!!!

  • Interesting.I always knew Jimmy Soul wasn't the original,but never heard it.Thanks

  • But it eh have no ugly Trini woman; And "All dem Tobago Gal Sweet Sweet Sweet like a Kaser Ball". So wha we go have to do? Any advice? I await your reply. Thanks.

  • was this the original that the Jimmy Soul song was made from?

  • yeah it was :)

  • HE'S SO RIGHT, I KNOW THAT.

  • Roaring Lion is right, this is great advice!

  • Alfonso Ribeiro, Carlton Banks from Fresh Prince, is the grandson of the late Roaring Lion

Type in Alfonso Ribeiro in wikipedia and look in the "Personal Life" section.

  • catchy...

  • aye elias!!!!!..was d scene?!...i could do with some sweetbread and mauby brudda!
