Us Brits have mostly used our own European aircraft, and I think the F-35 Lightning II will be the first U.S. built fighter (note I said built, not designed as it's a JSF and designed by several nations). Sad we didn't get to buy any F-22 Raptors, but the U.S. wouldn't sell any, and it's no surprise since even after the Eurofighter Typhoon was created, the F-22 is still the most advanced jet fighter. One of the reasons the F-117 was removed was because the F-22's stealth outmatched it.

The only problem its having is its oxygen problem and they have made less cause there isn't a need for them. @1bearcatf8f The YF-23 couldn't maneuver nearly as well as the F-22 with its thrust vectoring. So, air shows would've been a lot more boring. I think maneuvering is very important as a last line of defense.

The Raptor is an AWESOME plane. Imagine a good 1 on 1 dogfight between and Eagle and a Raptor. Both are amazing planes and very maneuverable. The Raptor has better maneuverability but it all comes down to who's at the controls.

The F-117 was not a fighter. It was an attack airplane. Classified aircraft, many of them defected Soviet, were given F-112 - F-119 designations at Groom Lake. The Nighthawk's designation was F-117. It was never a dogfighter. Think of it as an A-7 Corsair with fancy clothes on. The F-117 should have been designated A-something. And an F-22 on the range with an F-117?.....Bullshit. The F-117 was not a fighter. It was an attack airplane. Classified aircraft, many of them defected Soviet, were given F-112 - F-119 designations at Groom Lake. The Nighthawk's designation was F-117. It was never a dogfighter. Think of it as an A-7 Corsair with fancy clothes on. The F-117 should have been designated A-something. And an F-22 on the range with an F-117?.....Bullshit. Maybe it was a photo flight.

@geterdonein01 Because the F-14s are all retired. The next fastest plane that the US has in service is the F-15E if I'm not mistaken, until they work out all of the kinks with the F-35s. The F-22 can hold it's own, but with the $339 million dollar price tag, you don't want to beat on them too much at an air show. Still wish the YF-23 had made the cut though.

@336kgf the typhoon can supercruise yes, and stealth isnt all that great. why have a plane thats slower and cant be seen (only just) when you can have a faster plane and get in and out of the combat situation faster? and out radars have pinged the raptors many a time before when coming in to this country, even when they were trying to do it stealthly?

@IOWNA11 They did a test a few years ago with Raptors outnumbered by Eagles. The Eagles were told they were shot down. They never picked the F-22s up on radar, never saw it, didn't even know it was there.

@IvIast3er Cheaper my ass, the F22 Raptor is most expensive jet in the world as of 2011.. priced upwards 150 million U.S Dollars, meanwhile the F-18 is around 20-50 thousand U.S Dollars. And just for 1 hour of flight the F-22 needs more than 1 day of maintenance. Due to it's more powerful engines it also uses more fuel than the F-18.

@cyber8000 any airplane that has a jet engine (B2, 747, Me262, and the F22) is considered a jet. It's how they're implemented that makes the difference (obviously). But you're right, an airplane isn't always a jet...but if it contains a fan turbine engine that produces thrust as it's main source of power, it is considered a jet.
