  • Don't know how I've not heard this song until now....

  • a shirtless drummer?

  • ELLA deserves worship. Period!

  • After all this time, this video is still AWESOME beyond explanation! Please don't EVER take it off!! :)

  • I'm fairly confident Ella defined scattin.' she may not have invented it, but she certainly personified it!!! Way to go

  • Mad love. Mad love. Mad love

  • FABULOUS !!!

  • Ella's will forever be timeless!!!

  • genious

  • Surprise! You don't have to have your clothes on to play with Ella! It must have been really hot in that studio!

  • @lafharris

it would have been hotter if Flanagan and Pass had their shirts off too haha

  • This is so, so, oh so damned good. Legendary.

  • Ella was ONE in her OWN kind. There won't be another. Though I believe we all can try...or atleast learn from this.

  • I really liked the way Melba Moore did it as well. But hers was similar to Ellas here...though fun.

  • I listen to this EVERY freakin morning! Ella has always been one of my absolute FAVORITES, especially with Mr Paganini! SO BRILLIANT!!!!

  • Predivno!

  • WOW! FLAWLESS!!

  • She is absolutely AMAZING!!!

  • Wow, this is magnificent:)

  • And when fromt the balcony waaaayy up high.....duly,dwuly.dwully dodebedoo.....I love it....The Lady of Song......no one could compare in any life time!!!!

  • i am diggin the topless dudes -- yah! a jazz womon's world

  • Ella Fitzgerald was probably the finest female vocalist of the 20th. Century. Hands down.

  • Ella... of you I swing

  • This Lady Put Stink on this song ...and she knew just what to do!!! Love Her!!!!

  • Ay man, put a shirt on! He he he, sweaty drummers.

  • She was a natural with an extraordinary talent .

  • I guess Ella had that affect on musician when they come out of their clothes! lol

  • wait lol why do ppl have there shirts off lol

  • @joi124 cost reductions

  • @joi124 OK people this is 1974, and Germany, she is in a small studio recording, and in Germany much of Europe, especially then, there was no Air Conditioner. Still today many stores and concert places, schools, restaurants, the list goes on, do not use Air. I miss living in the USA, we are used to a different kind of life.

  • lol random but does the camera guy at :34 not have a shirt on? lol but she sounds WONDERFUL

  • INCREDIBLE!!!

  • I actually like Ella's voice during this period as much as I do when she was younger. As she got older, her voice kept the amazing phrasing and vibrato as inatrampolina said, but also it gained a subtle, humming warmth. I love it!

  • This is absolutely amazing! Thank you for posting! She first recorded this song in 1936 with Chick Webb's orchestra when she was 19 years old.

  • I'm 23 and have been on her since a child. NO ONE LIKE HER, Gene Kelly, Michael Jackson, Nicholas Brothers, Dorothy Dandridge, Josephine Baker, Cyd Chrisse,

  • Simply wonderful :)

  • i am doing a research paper on ella fitzgeralds music.

could anyone tell me what this song is about??

  • ¡Que hermosura!

    So beautiful!!!

  • i absolutely love how her voice aged... it may not have been as pure as in her youth but that vibrato, that precision that phrasing was KILLING til the day she died!!

  • I agree! Her voice quality in this kind of reminds me of Coltrane's tone for some reason...

  • the truth.

  • What a superb artist was Ella! One in a lifetime! Awesome, musical, inventive, expressive, beautiful...shall I go on??!!

  • EFFORTLESS!!!!!!!!! This woman was so so amazing....not many people can scat and scat so well.....Rochelle Ferrell Natalie Cole...love you girls but Ella was the queen...

  • FABULOUS!!!!

  • Keter (pronounced "Kee-ter") Betts, b. He was one of my dearest musician friends. Sadly, Keter is no longer with us. I miss him terribly. We first met in Chicago, when he was playing for Dinah, in the late fifties.

  • that scat at 1:36 is simply awesomely sweet. gosh!

  • unbelievable...

  • 57 years old and she still had it. Man, what a legend.

  • Ella, triste ou feliz ,anos sessenta ou setenta ,em studio ou ao vivo, sempre Ella esplendida ,maravilhosa.

  • Ella always surrounded herself with THE BEST!!! This particular session: Tommy Flanagan (Piano), Keter Betts (Bass), Joe Pass (Guitar) and Bobby Durham (Drums). How do I know? Well, Ella was my late son's Godmother since his birth, in 1968. I've had the pleasure to get to know EVERY musician that accompanied her since. Unfortunately Keter passed away three years ago and Tommy, approximately five years ago. I miss them, as well as, Ella...so VERY, VERY MUCH!!!!

  • Wow you are blessed to have known her.

  • Nice to meet you tony... i would like to know what studio this was recorded in? Was it the SWR Studio Stuttgart, Germany?

  • I believe that it was taped there. Lived outside of Stuttgart and Augsburg (outside of Munchen), FRG, for two years respectively.

  • how good would today's bands be if there were more shirtless drummers...

  • If Ella demands you take your shirt off...you take your shirt off!!!

    Naked drummer rules!

  • all drummers do it better shirtless.

    rad.

  • 2:55-3:00 was a very nice scat, 3:12-3:17 too

  • How can you not appreciate this woman?

  • I know!!

  • Amen.

  • MY FAVORITE!!!

  • WAS THAT DRUMMER SHIRTLESS?

  • Это одна из самых прекрасных песен Великой Эллы.

  • Это одна из самых великолепных песен Великой Эллы.

  • i totally agree

    she is amazing

  • MY favourite one from Ella....mellow and soft...but then...just Scattin´...wooow !

  • My absolute, all time favorite... I would have been broke if I were around during those days just following her around as a groupie. WHAT A VOICE! WHAT A SKILL!

  • my favourite rendition of this song on video ......grazie :-)

  • GOD singing to us..she is a GIFT from above

  • as usual ella, OMG!! MAGNIFICENT!

But couldn't the drummer have put on a shirt?? That's ELLA FITZGERALD, MAAAAAN! I don't care who you are!!! Yeah yeah, swingin' 70's, post-freelove generation, just another badass musician doin his thang, but I'm sorry. You gotta put on some clothes when THE Miss Fitzgerald comes in the room!! Disrespectful!! *tsk tsk*
