They have millions of Palestinians living on land occupied and claimed by Israel, and Israelis are building thousands of settlements on this land, yet those Palestinians are living under a system of religious apartheid--they do not have freedom, citizenship, etc. Second, I would argue that Turkey is a truer democracy in some ways. @cweinbl This may take more than one post. First, I was wrong about the number of settlements, but I think you are also. I should have read up on that more. The best figures I can find seem to indicate that there are a couple of hundred settlements on the West Bank, if you count the "outposts", which are just settlements by a different name. I think you are referring to the 12 settlements in the greater Jerusalem area. There are about a half million Israelis living on the West Bank.

Whether you like it or not, their is more evident Jewish (not forcibly biblical) history in the region than anything at all suggesting the word Palestine or Palestinian people. @amatuerarabist Really? At what point did Scheuer say that the US should not have allies? I have never heard him criticize UK or Canada. So he said that the US can prosper without Israel, and now you interpret that he's saying that the US should have no allies? Come on, that's ridiculous.
The US has been foolish to give Israel billions every year. Both China and Taiwan spend BILLIONS buying American produce to win our support. So why are we so generous to Israel when nobody likes Israel?

We have very good relationships with many countries that are not like us--such as Japan. And I would argue that Israel is not at all like us. Do we deny citizenship and residence to people for religious reasons? Do we occupy a neighboring nation for 40 years and build settlements on it, claiming God gave it to us?

But Jews in Muslim nations have no rights. Israel is the ancestral homeland of the Jewish people. It occupies LESS territory now than it did 3,600 years ago. You cannot "occupy" your own land. America built settlements upon land that belonged to Native Americans. Israel NEVER claimed God gave it land. The UN gave it.

Many Palestinians have suggested this. The UN did not give Israel the West Bank--I wouldn' t invoke the UN if I were you! The WB was given by the UN to the Palestinians!!

They the same rights as any other American. Surviving Native Americans can get all sorts of government benefits due to our country's mistreatment and land grabs, which we now recognize as wrong.

If you mean politically, then yes, there are some similarities, but also differences. Every nation has a unique culture, and this is a poor way to evaluate our relationships. One more thing, While the Israeli GOVERNMENT may not officially claim God gave them the land, the Jewish people regularly make this claim. Ever hear the term "the Promised Land"?

@LittleVillage24 The American PUBLIC is mostly neutral: 78% think America should favour neither Israel nor the Palestinians. It's the GOVERNMENT that's biased. I think that's because a.) the Israel lobby has lots of influence, b.) politicians really do think this tiny democracy is worth defending (and pissing off the entire Middle East in turn!) and c.) a fuzzy concept of "Judeo-Christian values" - basically, they're 'just like us'.

Can someone please tell me why Israel should be treated any differently than any other country by us? I'm not "against Israel" any more than I'm against Argentina, or France, or any other country which we have friendly relations with. But shouldn't we look out for our own interests, and make our foreign policy about our interests instead of about Israel's interests? They're a big boy--they can take care of themselves.

@cweinbl First, I don't think Israel is a true democracy. They have millions of Palestinians living on land occupied and claimed by Israel, and Israelis are building thousands of settlements on this land, yet those Palestinians are living under a system of religious apartheid--they do not have freedom, citizenship, etc. Second, I would argue that Turkey is a truer democracy in some ways. Third, what if Egypt transitions to democracy? Would that mean we should aid Egypt not Israel?

@DandAinTac Every Israeli citizen has equal rights, including Muslims, who are exempt from service. You will not find a more pure democracy than Israel's. Israel holds no Palestinian against his her will unless they have been charged with a crime. Israel has built less than a dozen settlements on in Samaria & Judea, not "thousands." Yes, Turkey is somewhat of a democracy. And America has been giving Egypt almost as much as Israel every year in aid. Look it up.

@cweinbl This may take more than one post. First, I was wrong about the number of settlements, but I think you are also. I should have read up on that more. The best figures I can find seem to indicate that there are a couple of hundred settlements on the West Bank, if you count the "outposts", which are just settlements by a different name. I think you are referring to the 12 settlements in the greater Jerusalem area. There are about a half million Israelis living on the West Bank.

Given that Israel clearly intends to annex the West Bank, the are a nation with two people--the citizens, and the non-citizens, who are all Palestinian. How would the world react, if we were still occupying Japan, building settlements over there, claiming God gave it to us, and all the Japanese are not citizens?

Every time a bullet is dug out of the body of a Palestinian child, it is made in America. We should be an honest broker in a peace process, but we are not. We support not the underdog, but the party with all the power. Our interests SHOULD be a just and comprehensive peace--Israel's interests are not the same--their interest is a greater Israel encompassing the West Bank.

But if there was a country occupying us, and they were saying that our country belonged to them because God gave it to them, and this other country was building settlements on our country, I think we would want to wipe them off the map too. This offer has been on the table for 65 years. Palestinians reject the concept, vowing to destroy Israel and "push the Jews into the Sea." This is visible for everyone to read in the charters of Hamas, Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad. When Palestinians want peace, rather than the destruction of Israel, they will have it.

@sd19791 The problem with your objection is that it gives even less basis to Palestinians claiming the Holy Land as their own. Whether you like it or not, their is more evident Jewish (not forcibly biblical) history in the region than anything at all suggesting the word Palestine or Palestinian people. The Syrians have already admitted they forced the Palestinians out for political purposes, so just that would justify Israeli occupation on the basis of international law.

@cweinbl the rocket and mortars are a reaction to the theft, and the ongoing continued theft of land.there are legally owned homes in Israel .but those homes in the disputed territories are not legal and this is why they have rockets flying over them . one cannot claim self defence when one is in the act of theft .and one cannot use the excuse of defence in order to keep the land they have stolen .
