1: can you rip them apart to make more and will they grow back to a big size. 2: are they naturally a ball or are they rolled by the seller. 3: do ghost shrimp or guppies like them. 4: what are the benafits?
@jackpot2085 lol I know I was just messing, we have them at our store, and sometimes they float. But it is true that people sell fake ones with pin pongs inside.
How do you get them to float? Just brought one home today for my 10gal, its got ls of small brown dots on the top side that only appeared after i put it in the tank. My lights arent that strong, is this the problem?
@cmanclan101 i don't know about the brown dots, but as for the floating, marimo stay still in their tanks unless they are in a current which is what you see here
@JassieLovesU Not true. As moss produces oxygen (Due to photosynthesis) it's possible for the oxygen molecules to get trapped by the moss particles. Therefore it floats up. It's perfectly normal :3
My moss ball is about 1.5" and I was curious as to how big of a pump I need to get it to turn like that? (He gets a brown spot if I don't turn him over every other day)
This tank is entertaining and made me laugh for some reason. I guess im picturing how shrimps would act in this tank. They would use the balls as tredmills. haha:)
Argh, after my recent post about my goldfish and marimo living in harmony, just got home to find that my fish have mullered one of them, it now looks like PacMan. Fortunately I have a small spare tank so have rescued him and put him in there on his own. But I take back everything I said - goldfish will trash them!
I have put two marimo balls in with my fancy goldfish. They occasionally nip at them, but it's obvious that they are eating whatever gets caught up in the moss, rather than the moss itself. The fish have pulled a couple of bits of moss off, but they spit it out when they eat it by accident. I have rolled any loose bits into tiny balls and put into a nano tank, am hoping they'll grow too. Completely fascinating things!
i have 2 baby turtles and i want to get these for thir tank the problem is that theres a floating wood dock at the top so theres no room for them to float around. is there such thing as a non floating moss ball or is there a way to keep them from floating?
i heard squeezing the water out will kill them, and they aren't supposed to float because that means they have air inside which will start to kill them. aren't they just supposed to roll around? that's what mind does. i'm going to move mine to a different tank so i can make videos of it (i have it in a plant growing tank that is just for that, plants and is a huge mess haha)
i bought them today....how do i care for them? just put them in my goldfish tank and walk away? i do a partial water change every 2 weeks been doing this for very long time and fish are very healthy, so the marimo should be ok in my tank? or?
@kelly51698 in the wild, they move according to the current of the water. I think they are moving in the tank in the video only because the tank has a filter/bubble making thingy. I dont know how they float though...
???? My Marimo don't float around--except for one. I just got them a new tank The light are halogen...is that ok? Also, as the filter airates the tank, isn't that like adding waste or s that ok too?? THANKS
:( i cant ever get my marimo to float even when i leave the light on all day. i even broke one apart to see if tiny marimos would float and they dont. but they dont die either. i dont know i guess mine are just lazy or something.
I'll be getting one of these adorable little things soon! every one or two weeks or so is the usual time to clean out the water right? wah. I want one so bad. I hear cool room temperature is okay. is that about right?
Can it live without air bubble machine? Since I put it in Jar.... I just bought a tiny eeny bity marimo, but it split a bit. What should I do to make it round again?
you get get one from the local pet store for a few bucks . the smallest marimo i saw was around 8mm =D . get the bigger ones. I heard their easy to keep. small ones slighty harder
@iwasoncemusic sure keep them in a container/bottle and change 1/2 of the water monthly . gravel is optional and wash marimo under running water if dirty . (gentle running water that is) =D
Hi, I'm currently poking around and learning about Marimo. Is it safe to use water conditioner and/or pH adjusters if I plan on adding marimo to my tank?
@irbenson HI, The biggest is about 2 1/4 inches, maybe just a bit bigger. At the time the smaller ones where about an inch in diameter. They have slowly grown. To make sure they do not get mushy and stay nice and fully green it is best to gently squeeze the water out of them every week.
@SmotpokerHI Hi i want to have those moss balls i love them! i just don't know where to get it and if is cheap please any URLs?? or links to a website that sells them :) and any advise please :) !
oh and can they be put in a big tank with 1 small baby turtle and 5 little fishes? :) !
Hi, Good morning. No fish won't eat them. Recently I add some cherry red shrimp to this tank and they love to eat bits of food off of them. Best of luck with your tank.
@sasukesAniki Actually, goldfish do eat Marimo so they are not highly suggested tankmates. ^^ A beta fish or shrimp (as already noted here) have less impact and get along well.
LOL you have to squeeze them under water like a sponge to let all the air out so they sink to the bottom of the tank. It's funny thought to see them flying about from the current.
are your anubias nana in substrate or just gravel??? do you give your plants any chemicals? thanks! love your setup! i think some gold white cloud minnows would love your tank. a school of 9 or so would be beautiful!
Hi, Thanks for your comment and for the complement. This tank has gravel in it. Occasionally I add a few drops of Flourish plant food. I agree with you about the fish, one of the tetras just passed and now only three are living in the tank.
Hi, Thanks. It takes no skill to maintain the moss balls. These haven't grown noticeably bigger. If you brake them up into smaller portions the they seem to grow faster. Happy New Year!
They are only five dollars at our Petco. I bought one the other day that is HUGE! I have never seen a marimo ball for the aquarium that large. Petco has the best merimos and the most beautiful Betta fish. At least the Petcos in the San Francisco Bay area do any way. Show quality Bettas for very reasonable prices. And HUGE merimo balls for 5 bucks. Well worth it because they are real big and healthy looking.
Very pretty. But mine do not look like this any more. I've had them for 2 years and they just started breaking apart. One of them stayed together but its "fur" does not look even like yours. I wash them every time I do a water change and squeeze them out gently. Why do you suppose they broke apart in little pieces like they did? I had to collect all the little pieces and put them in a separate cup because they were just becoming to messy in my tank and to small.
They break apart on their own in order to multiply from what I've read. You can also break them apart yourself. To keep them nice and circular you either have to have a tank with a good undercurrent (to keep them rolling around like they do in the wild) or "mold" them yourself every so often.
Yours are so stunning! I've never seen them displayed like this, turning in a filter current. Its really different. A new aquarium style of art. If I had a set up like yours I would add some white cloud mountain mennows. They are colorful little fish that love a strong current like that and they seem to like colder water. I've read Marimo also likes the water a bit cold. I think those little fish in your tank would look brilliant swimming all around those turning balls.
Hi, Thanks for the compliment. I am not sure why your broke apart. Occasionally like 2 or 3 times a year at the most I add a few drops of Flourish plant food to the tank. Maybe that would help, though I am not sure. In this tank I started adding the moss balls about 5 years ago and the newest are a bit over 3 years. I really like to see then bobbing around. If they sit too long they start to grab on to the gravel.
Hi, Thanks for the complement. These moss balls are slow growing but if you rip them into smaller bits and shape them after a few months they will form small balls. I have only done this once and it worked out well. Mainly I just buy them to multiply my collection. Best of luck with your tank.
Hi, In this small tank I am using a tertra internal filter. The reason the moss ball are floating is because I cleaned them by gently squeezing the dirty water out. It takes awhile absorb water again and sink. Thanks for checking out this video. Best of luck with your tanks.
i did see the whisper filter in there, but i didnt know its gonna float like that, i have a marimo ball and i did squeeze the dirty water out too but still wont float. it sinked right away
to answer donfishinghockey..they sometimes float because they are somewhat hollow as they get bigger. when they photosynthensize, they produce and collect little bubbles of O2 (like debris) and this increases their buoyancy causing them to float.
