  • It must've taken him a long time to walk across the stage. Why didn't they show that instead of blah-blah-blah from the speech? I wanted to see how the thing worked. =/ I wonder how long the battery lasts?

Seems kinda similar to the "backpack" exo-skeleton thing the military made, so foot soldiers could carry several hundred lbs. of extra weight for gear.

  • wow 492,221 viewers until this time :D

  • @kb24TM well I guess your fucking stupid and a high school drop out so don't even talk cause your a worthless piece of shit

  • Amazing! Simply amazing!

  • @kb24TM What is wrong with you?

  • @kb24TM don't speak about yourself like that...it's really self-deprecating.

  • @kb24TM and just what are you contributing to the world hmm? it's not about what he can actually contribute, but what he can do to inspire others. he could've just sulked the entire time for never being able to walk again. let's see what happens when you can't walk again. then in your words, you'd be the useless piece of shit....

  • @kb24TM Aside from your lack of grammar and word placement...I'd say you are the worthless piece here. I saw a kid who went against all odds to finish school and WALK. You probably came from an incestuous family (which can explain your further lack of intelligence) and failed school at one point. Warmer?? Do yourself a favor, BECOME the active human being you are talking about. It's TWATWAFFLES like you that embarrass this nation. It's idiots like you that make Good Americans suffer. .

  • @kb24TM How bout you stop acting like you wanna die and just die already if you said you would and at least he has guts to try something new then lay on fricking couch and eats chips all day you self obnoxious b**ch

  • This man is a fine example of the embodiment of strength and

pure determination. Cheers to him and his family for enduring

such an ordeal and not letting it deter him from his hopes and dreams.

How many of us even make it to college let alone complete it?

This chap did it despite what must of been a horrific experience

and still found the will within himself to not feel sorry for himself

but bloody soldier on! I salute you young Master Austin. Cheers!

  • as a Cal grad from the year before, and the son of a paralyzed veteran this video makes me so proud of my alma mater, GO BEARS!

  • i met him today! what an inspiration.

  • Im reading his article in Popular Science right now and just typed his name and these videos came up..amazing keep up the good work ..one day we will have all paralyzed people back on their feet again

  • This is truly a beautiful moment

  • The first time a youtube video almost made me cry

  • this just makes me more upset and regretful at how my parents refused to let me attend my dream school UC Berkeley im thinking and cheering for everyone there with each passing second and congratulations to Austin and the engineering department for this amazing feat!!! Go Cal

  • @xxbiucrushxx im so sorry, if you don't mind me asking, what were their reasons?

  • I teared up. This is truly wonderful. So proud to be a Berkeley student :)

  • this is truly remarkable

  • I don't know whether to laugh at or pity all the haters here...

  • absolutely amazing..brought tears to my eyes ..praise God that he was able to do it;)-

  • @akumu102 god had nothing to do with this.

  • @charlietuna34 God has everything to do with everything case closed ..leave it alone:)

  • @charlietuna34 faith and science are independent entities. There is no point to pit them against each other. I hope you can agree that if faith played any role in those engineers willingness to help this moment, then its a good thing. If it didn't its still a good thing that they made this happen.

    God Bless,

    Carl

    UC Berkeley class of 2010

  • @icametoeatyou I've tried to hold a civil discourse with you up until this point, but you're obviously a moronic closed-minded motherfucker, nobody can tell you anything because you're so all knowing. I hope for your sake that your children are as wise as you, and they're never forced with a situation where D&D seems to be an option. Of course, you could tell them, but as you said "nobody wants to sit through while another human blabs on about how he thinks you shouldn't drink and drive."

  • @icametoeatyou That's why people become anti-drunk driving speakers, not to garner praise for themselves, but to try and stop someone else from doing it. I always felt as if my experience stopped just one person from driving drunk, then it was worth it. What's apparently simple is your mind, you sit there and judge other people when you haven't walked in their shoes. That's ok though, you're perfect, and no one can be as smart as you are. A good sign of a fool is one who's sure that they aren't.

  • @icametoeatyou I'm glad that you've never made any mistakes in your life, must be nice. As I'm sure you're aware, alcohol inhibits logic, it's what they call being drunk, therefore drunk driving. I didn't congratulate him for being in a wreck, I merely applaud his perserverance for moving on after such a folley. When someone has been through it, they have firsthand accounts of the pain and anguish that drunk driving has caused them, and they can try to prevent it from happening to others.

  • That was so awesome that I not only clapped in a totally silent room, I cried.

  • I cried this was amazing

  • @Magnitude101 no it's not

  • This is beautiful. Congrats. :)

  • congrats. i walk probs bout 10,000 steps a day. i dont get a mention. cunts

  • @Magnitude101 Hey Hero, well done on your 10,000 steps. I wish better from a fellow Aussie. Would you be interested in coming to Burleigh Heads for a drink sometime? I have a mate who would not only buy your drinks, he would also refrain from pulverizing you should you decide to get out of line. You and I are from a proud heritage, one bestowed upon us by birth. Blokes like you know right and wrong. Act like a Man, don`t hide behind your computer. You are 30 years old, old enough to know better.

  • amazing!

  • I didn't get a hug from dean, this is discrimination against regular students

  • @sszhao11 I can arrange a hug for you sir. I am sorry that your feelings were hurt. I wish nothing but suffering for you and your family. The internet has created false bravado among the weak. You are not brave enough or tall enough to talk to the hottest woman in the bar, yet your power grows like mold behind your computer screen. You get more and more brave/vulgar each day and feed yourself with those who hate you. Well count me in. You won me over, you make fun of the weak. Well done Loser.

  • @757930 you are weird.

  • incase u didn't know... We aren't supposed to treat them differently, we need to treat people like this with the same respect that we give to others. Just because he's crippled doesn't mean he can't do anything we can do, I mean look at him! he just walked across the stage!!! Amazing what determination can do..

  • I once was told a story about a guy who was paralyzed from the waist down by my therapist. He had to have surgery due to this. He told my therapist, who was a surgeon at the time, that he was going to learn how to become a computer engineer four weeks after having surgery. It goes to show people how if you put your mind to something, anythings possible.

  • If u have same pain u can feel him, if u don't then u can't

  • I'm crying. So proud.

  • This isn't a miracle or a breakthrough it's one guy barely moving across a stage with a machine that would never be practical in the real world. If him getting to walk across the stage is the only time he does that then it's more of a cruel tease than anything else

  • @MegaBbop its an advancement that will be necessary for future developments in disability technology. In addition to the joy he has from this moment I'm sure he appreciates being part of this development even if doesn't see its final product.

  • Cheers for you! Found it amazing and stunning how they made those operating function legs for him, the professor and the engineer students(:

  • you go boy!!!!

  • A young man with Integrity and Fortitude!

A prosperous and healthy life to you Austin!

  • Or we could have used stem cells and he wouldn't be limping 2 steps like a robot and have a jetpack on him

  • Amazing.

  • This shows how determined humans are?

  • Whos tha filipina girls at 3.5

  • he could have tried harder, he didnt seem very determined, its like he didnt wana do it.

  • ? who is that?

  • Awesome!

  • @storkvana you are stupid. He is paralyased. For him to stand up. Was a miracle. Go spread hate somewhere else.

  • Error:"we could not be prouder." --- corrected: "we could not be more proud." --- ....this is at a COLLEGE right?....!!! Outstanding video, just amazing

  • @taquito928 he's Canadian cut him some slack. He's also a physics professor, not the most gramar focussed field.

  • That is a courageous young man! Congratulations Austin! Every positive thought stemming from this event and/or video far out weighs the immaturity displayed by those who are obviously lacking in their personal lives and show that in their comments.

  • how awesome would it be if thriller started playing in the background ,then he started dancing.

  • 114 people never tried something new

  • What a brave young man!

  • Well technically its not walking cause you dont usually walk with an exoskeleton...

  • How can someone dislike a video like this?!?! D:

  • you call that walking?

  • actually brought a tear to my eye, makes me thankful for what i've got and proud to be human

  • @tyl3rjgazley nice comeback.im hurt

  • Whenever I feel like giving up, I will pray. But not only wii I pray, I will remember Austin Whitney.

  • See! That's something you don't see everyday! Someone trying! I'm so proud of that Austin kid! It just shows thatbif you put your mind to do something you can acomplish anything!

  • That is the type of stuff you can inspire people with

  • Man I wish the school year would end

  • Fricken amazing

  • @KittiesJason

Haha thanks, all the respect to that guy ofcourse.

  • i can do that waaay quicker, without all that gear.

  • My hero, this is so cute!

  • Wow. . .there sure are a lot of people criticizing and appear to have never done anything stupid in their lives. Hell yeah, I did plenty when I was young and bulletproof so far be it from me to throw stones. Was it poor judgement on his part ? Most certainly. Sentence for his crime is that he alone will have to live with the FULL consequences of his actions for the rest of his life. A bad result of his judgement and a tough lesson for him but don't bullshit me into thinking you're all saints!

  • congrats ucb graduates!

  • I am a cancer survivor. I battled back from complete neuropathy in my legs for a year to being able to walk to getting my second degree black belt. Life is a bitch. I know what this guy is going through. And I am just glad to see that life isn't going to hold him back!

  • Respect

  • If graduation isn't long enough now they have to wait for him...u know some people were like my ur ass, stop hugging people.

  • 2,127 people are drunk drivers

  • Um... "He" still can't walk... just saying.

  • The world is finally using tech. To help instead of building factories that pour out smoke

  • when I first saw this, I could not stop smiling. Truly amazing.

  • There are so many people at my high school who don't want to walk at the graduation cerimony. It makes me mad because there are people like this guy who would go to great lengths just for their graduation. SMH....

  • Heart warming who would dislike

  • This is heart warming he did a good job

  • Hes the bionic man!

  • 2 people texting at 1:56

  • Science - 100,000,000,000... Religion - 0

This was a heart warming video.

  • Yay, Nichole 2011!!!

  • Yay!!!!!!!!!!! Cool vid seems like a nice person

  • Congratulations! This wad inspiring

  • Who ever disliked this has never thought about not having the use of their legs...they should be ashamed. I find this incredible and inspiring.

  • WALK

  • This is just awesome

  • C'est en faisant n'importe quoi qu'on devient n'importe qui

Much respect to you my friend !

  • Now they're all statistically intelligent. Gratz.

  • I expected "Mein Führer, I can walk!" in the top comments.

  • @gregk0095....can you stand behind it a little further?...(lol) just kiddin', "Let He Who Has Not Sinned Cast The First Stone!" I think he's paid for his and three or four other people's mistakes by now! he's still a kid who has to learn how to Make His Bed "the right way" just like everyone else in life! don't you think it's ODD that this happened to someone so gifted and intelligent...God is using him right now as we speak...to change the mindset of every student around him and beyond!

  • @KittiesJason whats up with the whole religious quotes cant come up with your own, "gifted and intelligent" if he was those things he would have known that right before he was about to start drinking he should have thought "hmm? if im driving and im getting alcohol in my system maybe i should pass my keys to one of my friends that isnt drinking" and the whole first stone thing yes i have sinned but they were little things not like him who ENDANGERED HIS AND OTHER PEOPLES LIVES!!! please reply...

  • @gregk0095...but to reply is to repeat what's already been said! no one's saying your argument does'nt make perfect sense...it does! but there's always two sides! he could've been a weak, angry, bitter, bastard like some (lol) but he chose to turn the course of his actions around! "Austin is a Gamechanger"...a Strong son-of-a-bitch! and his story will inspire for the rest of his life, whether we want it to or not!

  • @KittiesJason oh well i guess this is the end to the discussion but it makes me laugh to the hole angry, bitter part of your comment (LOL)

  • @gregk0095...nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree! oh, and check out Austin Whitney.Com! see ya bro!

  • High Five! Oh shit he fell! :P Thumbs up!

  • Does this mean he'll be able to walk again one day, or am i missing it.

  • my cousin went to berkeley damn he smart

  • so glad he had this moment....

  • Whyy Would Someone Dislike This?

  • @gregk0095 , we all make mistakes, some with consequences while others just get away with nothing happening. He was four years younger, why arent you happy nothing horrible happened and that he is around and doing something with his life. I am sure he was a lesson for many young drivers and those who drink and drive.

  • Who the fuck disliked this? Fucking trolls...

  • thats pretty ciik but you cant just cheat your way out of something natural with machines, it wont work for long

  • this is such an inspirational video. Well done Austin :)

  • @gregk0095 People make mistakes. He's obviously paying for his. At least he didn't wallow away in self pity or depression and is doing something positive to try an counterbalance that mistake.

  • so what...

  • i think nerds are hot

  • its like a jet pack wouldnt it be great if he just blasted into the air and was like i dont need legs when i can FLY!

  • @Ugurcan2452

In this day and age, our mental capacity is, for the most part, valued more than our physical prowess. While you rage over this kid (who doesn't even know you exist), he will go on to do things that are worth a damn. How does it feel to lose to a cripple? Oh, right, u mad u mad u mad.

  • @YouHateGasgara Wow . Really dude ? Thats kinda low .

  • freddiew on the left at 1:39?

  • Yes, drunk driving is so ridiculous, so dumb...e.t.c. He will live with the reminder for the rest of his life. Does this mean because he brought this upon himself we should not have compassion? Does this mean he should be cast to the dogs? He is an inspiration in the sense that he has moved forward and accomplished something in his life. I wish people would not drink and drive, if they do and an accident did occur I wish the injury would happen to them and not an innocent by stander or driver.

  • Hard to feel sorry for him when he should have known better then to drink and drive. He is lucky he didn't kill anybody with his stupidity

  • Surprised that some people have even disliked this video....

  • das was up even though he in his condition he didnt give up

  • I am just trying to figure out why there are dislikes on this video. How can someone not like this.

  • @dbacksbyrnesie He's responsible for his paralyzation. I'm not saying that means he shouldn't walk again, but that the opportunity to walk should be first given to someone who isn't at fault for their own paralyzation. For them it's unfair, for him it's fair.

  • @dbacksbyrnesie THUMBS DOWN THE VIDEO FOR BERKLEY! It used to be a good school before the 1960's.

  • He is a S.T.A.L.K.E.R . He took the exoskeleton with him from the zone.

  • Yes!!!

  • dudes awesome lol

  • It's disturbing that a person who got behind the wheel of vehicle drunk is being described as "inspiring" or, for that fact, being portrayed in a positive frame of reference. What is also being left out is that a person in the passanger seat was also severely injured - though anyone who would willingly and knowing get in a car with a drunk probably doesn't deserve much compassion either. Sorry, there's far better people that deserve sympathy than this guy.

  • @liquidgee13 I can agree with the fact that his drinking and driving was beyond stupid, I do not believe that he is beyond compassion. I live with the belief that everyone deserves a second chance. He got his when he got to walk at his graduation.

  • @uTubemaniacPfred Good for you. I, however, can't and won't find it in my heart to spare sympathy for persons who willfully and knowingly engage in such behavior even if it is only once because they are a liability to society and the human race at large, endangering the health and welfare of every innocent person that exists. Even more so that this guy ran a 4.0 grade point average - not that this matters, it just makes my disgust all the more prominent.

  • @liquidgee13 he never says that he was drunk you garbage ass

  • Terminator.

  • Why is there even a dislike option on this video?

  • Soon these things are gonna get smaller, stronger, cheaper... can't wait.

  • so many stupid ppl can u just enjoy the vid

  • Carlie Sheen would call that.... Well you know:)

  • This makes me feel like ive done nothing with my life. Congrats dude.

  • Very inspiring!!! that sooo awesome!

  • this guy gives me great confidence to do anything.

  • Epic man all i can say is epic.

  • haha yeah Austin, I went to high school with him! cool guy

  • The exoskeleton suit should be named Austin Power :D

  • What's better than winning the Paraolympics? Walking.

  • im a cybernetic organism

  • wtf is this?america is just wierd...

  • wait is this in china?

  • @firativerson LOL! There are tons of chinese students there, and the only caucasian ones are fat as hell!!!!

  • @kittykatro

missing the irony... Caught a fish thou

  • Poor guy

  • Those Berkeley guys are so smart! May they continue to work on that prototype! Coolio!

  • Paralyzed student, Austin Whitney, walks (holds onto zimmer frame) at graduation.

  • if u get paralysed do u get an instant pass?

  • @yulaw3 is a hater dont be mad because nobody likes you

  • @tyl3rjgazley ok then mongoloid, im happy.thanks.at least my friends are not from world of warcraft.

  • thats tight...congrats

  • Everyone was on their cellphones ... these guys need to learn some respect! Congrats to the class of 2011, and to Austin Whitney for being able to walk during his commencement!

  • look at the hot asian dude behind Austin....dam!!!

  • Good for him

    But Berkeley still sucks lol

  • Good job sir!

  • seriously, what's up with EVERYONE being on their cell phones?

  • good job kiddo. it's an inspiration to see that sudden, tragic accidents in one's life can't stop one from going forward.

and btw nice speech mr. man- except that everyone was on their phones, which shows what kind of school you guys run

  • Great Job, Austin!!!

  • I wish the very best for Austin Whitney !!!

I recommend students to use a site called KATAKSHAM - an academic social network - It's a site which lets students share content with classmates and professors and

also upload their certificates, audition video etc.

  • so many people on their phones..

  • 1:56, this is so boring, im going to play my phone

  • yes.we can rebuild him, we have the technology.. to make him smarter, faster, stonger, and walk once more

  • unfortunately youtube has been taken over by lowlife individuals who never excelled at anything so they posess the personality of swine and persecute others. this was a good moment. yes the equipment is rater bulky for now, but as all technology it will continue to develop. it's people like them that makes will impact people's lives in a big way. just to think this technology wasn't around to save christofer reeves but exists now should make people grateful. u never know what the future holds.

  • awesome. 1: great advancement in technology 2: inspiring moment 3: he needs to become the worlds 1st transformer(press a button, transform, and roll out)

  • science ftw
