I have to say about the comments though, it would appear that most people in the Western world, believers or not, aren't very understanding on both sides. Heaven is real, just not in the way we think it to be, since we humans tend to box things in and organize information to even a needlehead amount. That said, why should we have a war where one side has to be right and the other is wrong? We are unified within the Universe anyways.

When we die, our body dies and the "breath of life" goes back to God but it is NOT conscious. Our soul is not immortal until Jesus returns in the clouds with a great shout and the voice of the archangel and the dead in Christ rise first to meet Him then the living in Christ are caught-up to meet Him in the clouds. @voorhies69 That is a parable. The rich man symbolizes the Jews blessed with the knowledge of God's plan of salvationand promises. Lazarus symbolized all those in spiritual poverty- the Gentiles that the Israelites were to share their heritage. Do you really think 1 or 2 drops of water would quench his thirst? This was not about physical realities of the afterlife. He was referring to the unfaithfulness of the Jews, regarding their assigned responsibility. Luke 16 is devoted to stewardship.
