The key is the faint ghost note chick of the hi hat when Steve really plays it- also note the difference in the roll lenghts. The variance is about groove, taste and sinking yourself into the pocket. To play it right- go slow and focus on HH part with ghost chick and clean rolls (there is a difference between the two rolls). Gadd is a master composer and technician. You can do it!
@DeanoDrummin agreed....the first roll is straight 32nds then the second is more of a triplet feel roll. Also notice how steve plays with a very light touch, makes it sit a lot better if you know what i mean.
Argue about originality, argue that anybody can play Gadd's style but don't forget that he created all those tracks to go along with that music. Anybody can be copied, but to be the sculptor...the chef that adds that perfect ingredient of primal groove and zen perfection.....that's the ultimate goal. The legendary drumtrack that inspires drummers (or makes them effing argue about stupid shit) for years to come.
Steve Gadd came up with it yeah, but odds are was re-interpreting something else. No one "owns" beats, we all make them our own when we play them. Steve plays them in Steve's way, I'll play the same rhythm, but the groove might feel different.
To act like no one can play like Gadd is to put him up on a pedestal. The only thing that will do is limit your own playing mentally. Anyone can be great at the set. It takes practice and diligence.
@Gernads True, anyone can play like Gadd, but few will have the ingenuity of Gadd because of the simple fact that he was classically trained as a percussionist and few people who become big time drummers wait long enough through their life to learn drum-set after being classically trained. You're also right that this beat is not original. It is a grid of three into four with a bit of an extra (including an open roll/roll-off) end to keep it in 4/4 time.
I really love the fact that he looks very sincerely towards the "student" as if to say "hear that? feel that? you get that?" Like it means a lot to him.....and I'll bet it did.
@baller46254 not stoned... He is the drum groove - living it, breathing it. The groove is so smooth because it is an extension of his inner vibes. Gadd Rocks
What year was this taped? That 50 ways tune/beat was the in thing in 75' or 76' as I remember. Does anyone know for sure? Vintage Gadd always a cool thing. NYC is the only place for the kings to roam freely!
who da fuk doesnt like this fer crissakes! 16 dildoes . hey i like joey jordanson and those guys too it aint always about how fast and how hard you hit.
@spudwgrd .... that is such a good point ..... creative ability is so much more important than anything else ... its the IDEA that is most important and most difficult as well ... I dont care what kind of chops someone has , if their ideas suck then the chops are useless .
That playing at 150bpm does not make us drummers. Try keeping up with that lick at around 88bpm that he plays it for a few minutes and you will be more appreciated than storming around a kit at speeds, that nobody can count anyway.
Actually, the best musicians didn't get to be that good because drugs. To them, music is their drug. Lots of good musicians do drugs, but the best ones don't because they are too smart.
@biggstile I agree that drugs don't make you better, but I will also say that some of the best did do drugs. As for not doing drugs because of higher intelligence, that is a little overblown. Depression is a common occurance with alot of the smartest creative people, so an easy escape is drinking, smoking, or doing other types of drugs. Just saying...
So many know-it-alls. What some of you kids don't realize is that Gadd is such an innovator, one of the first fusion drummers meaning he meshes many different styles of music and makes them sound new by combining them together: jazz/rock, latin/jazz, latin/rock, and he never needs a double-bass drum to blow your mind. He is admired by many pro-drummers for his techniques and his grooves.
@benbrisson26 ... I think Gadd bridged the gap between pop drummers and jazz drummers ... up until Steve Gadd came on the scene you were either a Tony Williams / Buddy Rich jazz drummer or you were a Ringo Starr / John Bonham pop / rock drummer .... to my knowledge Steve Gadd was the first drummer to really use jazz chops in a rock / pop setting ..and vice versa
@sweetfly66 I love Steve Gadd but I think you have to consider Ginger Baker as the first transitional drummer. Look at his set up - the two bass drum came from Louis Bellson. He's also heavily influenced by the British Jazz groups of the 1950s. In fact, Baker has always considered himself a jazz drummer that happened to play rock music.
@jimraw1 ... It doesnt matter what Ginger Baker considers himself ... I have never heard Baker play jazz and his playing with Cream does not strike me as jazz influenced . Gadd on the other hand played with the US Navy Big Band , Chick Corea as well as all the great pop stuff like Paul Simon and Ricky Lee Jones .... nah , Baker is a rock drummer ...
@spudwgrd Very true. No matter how many guys tell me they heard something new, or did something new, or saw somebody do something new, I can always be sure, pretty much 100% of the time, that either Steve Gadd or Buddy Rich already did it.
He definitely is one of the greatest drummers of all time and it's hiliarious how he bends forward each time he plays the bass drum, he seems so satisfied each time he kicks the pedal down :D:D
This video pissed me off when I first saw it because I discovered I've been playing that groove wrong for years! I had all the notes right as far as sn HH bs toms BUT the one HH with the foot totally changes the groove!
@Frankenpalin not weird at all. As long as you play the right drums at the right time it should sound fine. But playing it lefty will leave your right hand a little more open to get to the floor tom (s).
It's pretty ridiculous to think that Paul Simon came up to him with a track and he came up with this insane beat like this. When I hear a song, I sure as hell know I won't come up with something as awesome as this.
this pattern has me in knots :) awesome drummer. makes my job a little easier when theres guys like this making impossible patterns for me to learn :) good on ya steve.

Baked means hes high from smoking weed. And plenty of people can function just fine high, one of the few drugs that allows that if you've been doin it for a while. In a way, you actually play drums better high (or atleast I do) because you just feel the beat and the fills, accents, etc the whole time instead of overthinking it, and amazingly it works.
most drum solos i see i usually say to myself, yeah thats good . but rarely wanna hear more than 30 secs or a minute of it. now this is an interesting piece of music to me.
@bredenda1sam He does. He has grove, some of those drummers who can roll down the set really fast with double bass have no skill or talent. anyone can do that.
@bredenda1sam So true. A drummer who puts down a great groove is much more valueble to a song. Best groove-drummers in my opinion are Steve Gadd and Steve Jordan.
If you do want to hear a mind blowing drum solo though, search for gadd gang - way back home, he does do some amazing solos if thats what you're interested in.

Alright...he's been on some good records. All I'm saying is ...where's the mind blowing drum solo?
rrdrums110 2 years ago
There's no solo, that's why the video says "lick"
Twilight788 2 years ago
You don't need a mind blowing solo to be a good drummer

most drum solos i see i usually say to myself, yeah thats good . but rarely wanna hear more than 30 secs or a minute of it. now this is an interesting piece of music to me.

@bredenda1sam He does. He has grove, some of those drummers who can roll down the set really fast with double bass have no skill or talent. anyone can do that.
JointOpsAirsoft 1 year ago
@bredenda1sam So true. A drummer who puts down a great groove is much more valueble to a song. Best groove-drummers in my opinion are Steve Gadd and Steve Jordan.

@rrdrums110
If you do want to hear a mind blowing drum solo though, search for gadd gang - way back home, he does do some amazing solos if thats what you're interested in.
