  • fuckin rad

  • Sixteen chumps are just butt-hurt cuz theres no mo' room on the bus w/Gus

  • I love him ;-))

  • The key is the faint ghost note chick of the hi hat when Steve really plays it- also note the difference in the roll lenghts. The variance is about groove, taste and sinking yourself into the pocket. To play it right- go slow and focus on HH part with ghost chick and clean rolls (there is a difference between the two rolls). Gadd is a master composer and technician. You can do it!

  • @DeanoDrummin agreed....the first roll is straight 32nds then the second is more of a triplet feel roll. Also notice how steve plays with a very light touch, makes it sit a lot better if you know what i mean.

  • so simple, and yet, so legendary... pure geniality

  • If you need to calibrate your metronome, start here.

  • i love it then u can see the beat in the person playing the drums

  • He strokes the drums like you'd stroke a sacred unicorn.

  • so stoned lol.

  • im learning this now in my drum class.. such a nice beat

  • There is only one Steve Gadd. It seems like every drummer tries this grove at some point. But very few can get it.

  • anyone else thinks that he looks a little gay from 0:50 to 0:59 ... ?

  • @kalodiomenos13 not gay,stoned..he looks a bit like george clooney at times,im stoned so i dont know.

  • now that i'm high, i can tell steve seems pretty baked too here

  • Once i got this down it became one of my FAVORITE things to play. It's just a really comfortable beat.

  • Argue about originality, argue that anybody can play Gadd's style but don't forget that he created all those tracks to go along with that music. Anybody can be copied, but to be the sculptor...the chef that adds that perfect ingredient of primal groove and zen perfection.....that's the ultimate goal. The legendary drumtrack that inspires drummers (or makes them effing argue about stupid shit) for years to come.

  • I did it!!!! yesssss!!!!

  • How about the opening of "Get it right the first time" by Billy Joel.

Though that's a very simple rhythm, it's still a swinger.

  • 'True, anyone can play like Gadd'

Not in my experience... Not by a long shot.

The timing. The feel. The taste. Rare qualities... and I've seen a lot of good drummers.

    There's only one steve gadd.

  • @spudwgrd Well said!

  • I think you've got it drummer6alphahotel.

  • He's a really good player, but I hate his smug look when he plays

  • This may be the most frustrating thing I've ever tried to figure out. It sounds so simple, but there is so much going on!

  • Germads, you're right about one thing. "Anyone can be great at the set. It takes practice and diligence." But you my friend, just don't get it.

  • Steve Gadd came up with it yeah, but odds are was re-interpreting something else. No one "owns" beats, we all make them our own when we play them. Steve plays them in Steve's way, I'll play the same rhythm, but the groove might feel different.

To act like no one can play like Gadd is to put him up on a pedestal. The only thing that will do is limit your own playing mentally. Anyone can be great at the set. It takes practice and diligence.

  • @Gernads True, anyone can play like Gadd, but few will have the ingenuity of Gadd because of the simple fact that he was classically trained as a percussionist and few people who become big time drummers wait long enough through their life to learn drum-set after being classically trained. You're also right that this beat is not original. It is a grid of three into four with a bit of an extra (including an open roll/roll-off) end to keep it in 4/4 time.

  • sure, you can do that. but you DIDN'T do it first, and you cannot do it as well.

  • just learned this beat, and im playing it nonstop! so awesome

  • I like how he bangs the kick drum at 0:53

  • @synthpathetic Hey so WHO is the other guy? Rick Marotta?

  • @danny7182 Thanks man.

  • @ljdcrazy13 no worries

  • What is the stickings?

  • I can't believe my eyes:16 people didn't like this! Internet should be banned for someone.

  • As soon as I saw this I said, I wonder what the high hat sounds like on its own..."now let me play it with just the high hat". CHA-CHING!!!!

  • I will never cease to love this video.

  • Steve is like a clock that keeps perfect timing. Great groove.Cool video. Thanks for posting it. Wayne

  • What great feel and choices that make this such a unique rhythm.

  • sweeeeeeeeeeeet

  • I can play that. But I'm fairly certain I'm not creative enough to come up with a lick like that!

  • I really love the fact that he looks very sincerely towards the "student" as if to say "hear that? feel that? you get that?" Like it means a lot to him.....and I'll bet it did.

  • So clean.

  • In the old school, it's known as a "beat." In the new school, it's a "figure."

  • @baller46254 not stoned... He is the drum groove - living it, breathing it. The groove is so smooth because it is an extension of his inner vibes. Gadd Rocks

  • There's really neat drumming in Grizzly Bear's "Two Weeks", that's clearly pretty influenced by this beat.

  • @Skeletine Yea Skeletine! That tune is a killer. Great groove!

  • @Skeletine so true..

  • @Skeletine Thumbs up for Grizzly Bear mention. Also, very good ear.

  • He is not just playing, he is FEELING the drums. That's what makes the best differ from the rest.

  • when is this from!

  • What year was this taped? That 50 ways tune/beat was the in thing in 75' or 76' as I remember. Does anyone know for sure? Vintage Gadd always a cool thing. NYC is the only place for the kings to roam freely!

  • @spudwgrd I can do that

  • oh. my. god. I'm mesmirized.

  • @rocknrollhoocheecoo

Spoken like a true pot head! I'm sure Mr. Gadd was not under the influence at the time. He's way to cool for that.

  • his foot doubles are always perfectly accented..

  • who da fuk doesnt like this fer crissakes! 16 dildoes . hey i like joey jordanson and those guys too it aint always about how fast and how hard you hit.

  • Look at David Blaine tear it up on the drums!

  • @spudwgrd you are 110% correct! I'll take creativity over blazing techique (which Steve has too!) any day of the week!

  • I agree, he's an original. Often immitated, never duplicated.

  • @spudwgrd .... that is such a good point ..... creative ability is so much more important than anything else ... its the IDEA that is most important and most difficult as well ... I dont care what kind of chops someone has , if their ideas suck then the chops are useless .

  • キリンジの「tandem runaway」に酷似している・・・

  • So what does this tells us boys and girls????

That playing at 150bpm does not make us drummers. Try keeping up with that lick at around 88bpm that he plays it for a few minutes and you will be more appreciated than storming around a kit at speeds, that nobody can count anyway.

  • keep pressing 8.....

  • @ronchan2002 i lol'd

  • Actually, the best musicians didn't get to be that good because drugs. To them, music is their drug. Lots of good musicians do drugs, but the best ones don't because they are too smart.

  • @biggstile I agree that drugs don't make you better, but I will also say that some of the best did do drugs. As for not doing drugs because of higher intelligence, that is a little overblown. Depression is a common occurance with alot of the smartest creative people, so an easy escape is drinking, smoking, or doing other types of drugs. Just saying...

  • @biggstile Implying not doing drugs means you''re smart is pretty ignorant.

  • So many know-it-alls. What some of you kids don't realize is that Gadd is such an innovator, one of the first fusion drummers meaning he meshes many different styles of music and makes them sound new by combining them together: jazz/rock, latin/jazz, latin/rock, and he never needs a double-bass drum to blow your mind. He is admired by many pro-drummers for his techniques and his grooves.

  • @benbrisson26 ... I think Gadd bridged the gap between pop drummers and jazz drummers ... up until Steve Gadd came on the scene you were either a Tony Williams / Buddy Rich jazz drummer or you were a Ringo Starr / John Bonham pop / rock drummer .... to my knowledge Steve Gadd was the first drummer to really use jazz chops in a rock / pop setting ..and vice versa

  • @sweetfly66 I love Steve Gadd but I think you have to consider Ginger Baker as the first transitional drummer. Look at his set up - the two bass drum came from Louis Bellson. He's also heavily influenced by the British Jazz groups of the 1950s. In fact, Baker has always considered himself a jazz drummer that happened to play rock music.

  • @jimraw1 ... It doesnt matter what Ginger Baker considers himself ... I have never heard Baker play jazz and his playing with Cream does not strike me as jazz influenced . Gadd on the other hand played with the US Navy Big Band , Chick Corea as well as all the great pop stuff like Paul Simon and Ricky Lee Jones .... nah , Baker is a rock drummer ...

  • @spudwgrd exactly right

  • @spudwgrd Very true. No matter how many guys tell me they heard something new, or did something new, or saw somebody do something new, I can always be sure, pretty much 100% of the time, that either Steve Gadd or Buddy Rich already did it.

  • In Gadd We Trust

  • @Kroy5312 Gonna get that tattoo'd onto me,MASSIF fan,met him twice,have all his stuff.Good one brother!

  • faarrrrr outttt maaaan.

he's off his fkn suede !

  • @spudwgrd

Well said and it goes for everyone else too from Krupa, Rich, Bonham...

  • some drummers play the drums

    gadd makes music

    champion!

  • He is the only one to play it like that , great ...

  • he's making it look so easy! :)

and he looks like jordan rudess at 1:10 hehe

  • Good God Gadd! *sigh* love this groove! ...and Amen to that spudwgrd!!

  • i did this beat in my drum lessons :D

  • now I'm so proud that I have the signature drumsticks saying: Steve Gadd!

  • Awesome beat, but I prefer holding the sticks the other way. ^-^

  • he looks stoned xD

  • simply GREAT.

  • lovely lovely sounds - and awesome little groove.

  • Steve Gadd signature sticks FTW

  • He definitely is one of the greatest drummers of all time and it's hiliarious how he bends forward each time he plays the bass drum, he seems so satisfied each time he kicks the pedal down :D:D

  • Does anyone else feel that the video is kinda awkward aside from the awesome drumming? lol..

  • @jTg829 Awkward ? In what way ?

  • @bowiemott When Gadd looks deeply into the other guy's eyes and makes his classic drumming gestures. haha. Like starting around 0:50 to the end.,

  • @jTg829 lol he really likes the guy watching him

  • 14 dislikes ?? wtf. this is so good !

  • he's sick ! unbelievabley good. makes it look so easy,he looks at the guy like, "ok, come on, you got that?"

  • Check the new great drummer out: VICTOR THELL

  • he sucks ... NOT. sorry, just watched borat...

  • This is one of the most difficult grooves to play correctly man. He's the master!

  • This video pissed me off when I first saw it because I discovered I've been playing that groove wrong for years! I had all the notes right as far as sn HH bs toms BUT the one HH with the foot totally changes the groove!

    Thanks for posting this!

    What a groove master!

  • @dangerics

Ugh, that sucks. I'd be upset too

  • @TheNilis Na. it's cool. Now I know and it's so much more fun to play! That's the danger of learning by ear!

    Peace.

  • lol at steve gadd 0:55

  • Anyone know were this clip was taken from. It would be cool to find the whole thing.

  • @adminallen It's from his first drum video. "Steve Gadd- Up Close".

  • Jason McGerr picked up that hat lick in DCFC. Really cool to see it by Gadd back then. Two guys to listen to, often ,for drums.

  • @spudwgrd ya know, someone once said, its not WHAT Steve plays, its HOW he plays it that makes it special.

  • Gadd is one cool cat.

  • Such simplicity, while sounding complex to us non-drummers, is sheer genius.

  • I would listen more groove like this in today's song... ah... today's music is shit

  • that is so awesome.. his body movement just oozes rhythm

  • TUNE BOYS.

  • Is this supposed to be in black and white?

  • this guy is possessed i think:

search "Amorphic drum" ...1st video result

  • This took me almost 3 months to learn... and I still suck at it

  • Open handed! simply perfect, I love the way the foot HH replaces a couple of 8th note taps. Nice.

  • It is sooo amazing how simple and fantastic that goove is.

  • 50 ways to do coke with your lover

  • @generatrix999 your Ignorant!! limp dick!!

  • Dear, Steve Gadd. I love you. That is all.

  • Gadd is great!!

  • Fantastic groove.

  • genius - beautyful, sublime. And I'm a Rock Drummer.

  • I love this. For a totally different style check out Buddy Rich...stick trick solo. He must be the greatest drummer who ever lived.

  • @youwishyocouldplay How about you demonstrate those on your mom. I'm sure she'll be proud of you. Who knows, maybe you'll get a surprise.

  • daaaaamn ive been wondering how to play this beat forever! it all makes sense now he uses his left hand on the hi hat....im gonna go learn this

  • Gadd's work is great. I love how he gives the other guy at :53 look that says, "what? you can't do this?"

  • @skiptracer62 EXACTLY!!

  • I got 50 ways to blow a dick, boyeee!!!

  • duplicating it doesnt make you good

  • @slgion it does not make you good -but it is a start. Any drummer should try to learn this like a guitarist learning Jimmy Page or BB King licks.

  • @thereaflashgordon yeah thats true

when your as good as gadd weckl vinnie and all those people

everyones not tryin to be better

  • weird I always played the hat with my right hand and it sounds the same

  • @Frankenpalin not weird at all. As long as you play the right drums at the right time it should sound fine. But playing it lefty will leave your right hand a little more open to get to the floor tom (s).

  • what a great accent... and not that simply to cover

  • THIS IS THE MOST SIMPLY AND AMAZING THING EVER!

  • It's pretty ridiculous to think that Paul Simon came up to him with a track and he came up with this insane beat like this. When I hear a song, I sure as hell know I won't come up with something as awesome as this.

  • his vic firth sticks are sick!!. and so is he

  • haha he is sooooooooooo stoned..

  • he looks like jeff goldblum

  • @Danex5o yeh, the short version:-)

  • @scottie859 agree totally. I have said I'm going to learn this before I die. it is so simple yet so freakin' hard to do!

  • what time signature is this in?

  • @deadddxxx it's in 4

  • one of the best licks :) I really mean it!

  • this pattern has me in knots :) awesome drummer. makes my job a little easier when theres guys like this making impossible patterns for me to learn :) good on ya steve.

  • nice groove love his face at :54 looks like he's having an orgasm lol

  • what a legend

  • Does any one know what year this little gem was filmed? I remember when 50 ways was getting alot of air play. I think it was 75' so this vid is old!

  • I love the way he leans his head forward and just stares at that guy every time he hits those bass drum notes. Great groove

  • i like gthe look he gives interveiwer like" ok? get it?"

  • is the music notation for this sumwea online....tryna write it out for my drum student.....

  • Did he come up with this beat and Simon wrote the song around it or did he fit it into the song.

  • Great question nerd. Maybe Paul Simon heard him warming up and it inspired him to write the song around Steve's part. It's a fantastic groove.

  • Steve does seem a bit quiet - I'm not sure what baked means but he must be all there otherwise his playing would be terrible, which of course it isn't. I have tried to play this but I can't quite get it right. Has anyone broken it down?

    Davo

  • I'll just play the ummm hi-hat part by itself... Not being much of a drummer, but he seemed to break it down into parts... I guess it is practice practice and then practice some more. I have a kit and have tried to play it but I just completely and utterly suck at it. I am sticking to guitar, you don't need to be as coordinated!

  • Baked means hes high from smoking weed. And plenty of people can function just fine high, one of the few drugs that allows that if you've been doin it for a while. In a way, you actually play drums better high (or atleast I do) because you just feel the beat and the fills, accents, etc the whole time instead of overthinking it, and amazingly it works.

  • hell yeah, me too. i love drumming to the point where i will die before i become something other than a drummer for a living

  • Haha, i remember my drum teacher showing me this video to learn how to play this song, i can still play it too.

  • Is he any relation to Paul Gadd aka Gary Glitter?

  • Dude, he's so blazed.

  • @Twilight788

yeh. from 00:50 to 1:11 he looks sooooo baked. haha

  • heroin

  • There's no solo, that's why the video says "lick"

  • You don't need a mind blowing solo to be a good drummer

  • most drum solos i see i usually say to myself, yeah thats good . but rarely wanna hear more than 30 secs or a minute of it. now this is an interesting piece of music to me.

  • @bredenda1sam He does. He has grove, some of those drummers who can roll down the set really fast with double bass have no skill or talent. anyone can do that.

  • @bredenda1sam So true. A drummer who puts down a great groove is much more valueble to a song. Best groove-drummers in my opinion are Steve Gadd and Steve Jordan.

  • @rrdrums110

If you do want to hear a mind blowing drum solo though, search for gadd gang - way back home, he does do some amazing solos if thats what you're interested in.
