  • It's kind of funny, with the second example where it doesn't sound as good, if you just added a bit of a flourish at the end of each phrase, it would have fit perfectly. lol

  • Great lesson! Congratulations! You know most supposedly pros give a lot of insight on their styles and how to play like them. Which I think that for someone that is just starting out on any instrument that approach do not help at all. Now I find your video to be very concise, informative, and entertaining at the same time. I totally think that you should make more instructional videos with this same approach. Take care and keep on the excellent job!!!

  • @organicchewy3 Thanks so much for your comment!

  • this is lesson is among the best on youtube. i dont know how many times i have watched it, thanks! :D

  • Isn't this a good way to play modes?

use the target notes way but then playing the notes that differ from the major scale alot.

Like in F lydian you are in C major.

Than you use F,A,C and then use the flat 4th of the lydian scale with it.

F,A,B,C here is B the different note from c major.

Hope I didn't blast your brains out?

  • @liamzuid The same concept applies to modes as well. FAC are the notes in an F major chord, and using a B (actually the sharp 4th of F lydian) gives you a very strong, lydian tone. Since B is right next to C, it can add a lot of tension and character to a solo

  • @fhatsk8er I was afraid you wouldn't understand me haha.

I'm writing my own lydian solo it should be online in 2 weeks or so maybe you should check it out.

  • thanks man, u saved my a**! some people want me to play in a church, and i don't know any of the song they are going to play, i will have to improvise the entire set and this really helps! :) btw nice shotgun-target effect!

  • @bloodthirstychainsaw I'm glad it helped, good luck playing at the church!

  • thanks but i have one question i start the triad sweeps and ive been adding more strings to make it a longer sweep and i cant seem to get my timeing on eeach note right is there a sertin thing to do that might help

  • @MrDrag0nfist Timing is a mechanical issue, so I recommend working with a metronome. Keep your movements small and fingers close to the fretboard. I started painstakingly slow at first--at a tempo that I could play all the notes dead-on. Once you find that tempo, then push yourself faster from there. You might also try isolating the right hand since it handles the string attack. Mute the strings with your fret hand and prac just the picking motion

  • Great and awesome job Dietz! I'm preparing to learn guitar, so it helps alot! Thanks a lot! :D

  • @TheIvanZero thanks! These tips will certainly help your improv. good luck!

  • This was really helpful, Always wondered what you went into, when you did these contest things, gives me a greater insight into guitar work, thanks man

  • @TheRsmoneymakinguide glad it helped :)

  • Ibanez jet king? always wanted one of those...

  • I find that spacing also helps if youre inexperienced cos it gives you a moment to think where your going next. awesome vid :)

  • DUDE YOUR JACKED!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

    Herr Séb from France

  • @thereddwarf2 Thanks Herr! Haha my bad, I could have put a gate on

  • i new thost :O but i didnt know i did that =P

  • Appreciate the video. I really enjoy all of your solos and especially like that youre willing to take the time to explain your approach, thanks man.

  • @Paninian glad you like it!

  • awesome video man, you're so kind! great teacher too, keep it up (Y)

  • Are you Phil X's son?

  • This is great! =D Only one problem... Mabye 50% of people who actually play guitar know simple theory like roots, 3eds, 7ths etc... Its sad really...

  • @tippy400 im saddly one of those guitarists but im going to break out it though jazz!

  • @Darkdevil1584 Oh man, that will take some time and A LOT a patience, just keep at it tho and it will pay off. I've been studying jazz bass for two years now.

  • @tippy400 Thanks! Haha I realize that, that's why I said to experiment. Even though I strongly recommend learning basic theory, it is possible to play shapes or any notes over the changes and use your ear to judge

  • this was awesome dude, it answered soo mny questions that i was recently wondering about, thanks :) keep up the awesome videos

  • @boboblaw awesome, I'm glad it helped!

  • target notes!, badass! :D

  • @joshrussell18 haha yes, thanks!

  • problem with me is, im a retard when it comes to theory and i only know one scale haha. are you saying that you should play notes that you would in a chord but just at different parts of the fretboard?(sorry for my noob-ery)

  • @sirbumfluf You can play the notes anywhere on the fretboard, but you could use the notes in a chord as a guideline. For example, an A minor chord contains A, C, and E. I know ahead of time that I want to play one of those notes right on the chord change. You're aligning your solo with the underlying chords in a way. Like I said in the vid, you can experiment by landing on any different notes. Some will sound good, others won't

  • Thumbs up XD

  • @Xapheion101 thanks!

  • MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  • @LRMMcDonnell Merry Christmas to you too!
