Es muy cierto que para tocar el piano en una orquesta, uno tiene que ser sobresaliente porque hay muchos tocando el violin o otros con flautas, pero solo hay un piano. Ella hace excellente en hacer ese trabajo de tocar el corazón de la orquesta!

@nicoejz people often misconceive was improv is, often it is things played previously (one must have technical ability) but also understanding what you are doing, chord progressions, modulations, melodic patterns, etc.

I think improvising skills build over time and are based on past experience. The ability evolves but you must push yourself to take risks and to experiment. Gabriela has become highly skilled and seems to know Bach especially well.

Not only does she have a good ear, but she has the flexibility and dexterity of mind to improvise (in a style). The statement that it lacks the essence of the piece; I beg to differ, it is not the Romantic essence she tries to emulate. She created something new. And very nicely too.

@EatHotLead4Ever She's playing it in the style of Bach. Honestly, I think she gets points simply for being able to improvise on a Rachmaninoff melody in Bach's style and pull it off.

Plus, improvisation isn't the art of finding the essence of someone else's music. It's the art of creating, either from scratch or from a source theme, an entirely new piece.

She'd just played the concerto itself when she did this piece, also - This was her encore.
