Michael would NOT have lifted, you don't what you're talking about, lmao. The man was one of THE most competitive drivers out there and wasn't about to get beat by this punk Montoya. The evidence is there, he didn't even lift in the spot he was in and a lot of people would have. Neither one was going to give the other any chance for that win. The only reason Montoya won was cause he got a great draft off the lapped car. Michael had more balls as a driver doing crazy stuff then anyone else.

Senna rang rings around him in practice, qualifying and races before Michael was dropped by Mclaren. Well Michael's run in F1 wasn't exactly welcomed by the F1 community. They hated having an American there and the support he got from people was NONE. Senna was the only one who reached out to him. He didn't want to be there by the end of it and left, Which is why McLaren still say he owes them those races. He wasn't let go, he left.

@MissEgasMoniz That's inaccurate actually. He dominated road courses through the 90's more then he ever did ovals. Yes Montoya is a great driver, that's undeniable. However, in this race that lapped car made all the difference for Montoya to gain the little draft he needed to win by a nose. Also, while F1 has great drivers, I wouldn't say all the best drivers in the world are there.

@garethkielty dude... had andretti been on montoya's spot, andretti would have lifted. In fact had pretty much any other driver in the history of racing been on Montoya's spot, they would have lifted (except maybe senna). It takes more guts than you can possibly imagine to not lift at that moment when you know have nowhere to go if you're on the slipstream of the backmarker and are about to crash him from behind at 230 mph. You could die.

In the final part Andretti try desperately to take the wake of the front car but ....right there ,there is Montoya that was exactly looking and following that car from the bend before and in fact he close the bend inside leaving Andretti no chance ,when Andretti understand it's too late. Montoya what a driver !!!!

At 1.59 you can see what a terrific driver is Montoya and again at 2.46 when there is a lap to go Montoya let easily Andretti the lead just to take the wake and overtake him to win the race .
