That lapped car in front of them must have decided the race. He gave Montoya a slipstream and maybe an edge over Andretti. Incredible! But, if I was the driver on that lapped car.. I would get off the track ASAP after looking in the mirror.. that awesome battle of titans behind me!! :P
There was no DRS or Kers. It sems like the solution for today is what use to be done on the past. F1 is great but it could work if they look back on F1 or even Cart, Indy and etc. Great video. Amazing.
The reason Montoya won is because he got closer to the lapped car in front of him, gaining draft from him giving him more speed. Lol at the people who didn't realize it.
I think it would be better if Montoya left the NASCAR and return to IRL (formule cars). Chip Gannasi Nascar Team are not a good team. IRL team are better.
Fecking damn. I've seen this video some 30 or 40 times already. And it still gives me goosebumps. 200mph+, close walls, wheel banging... Overwhelming...
@Thedearster He also had the courage to go high to catch the draft, and overtake when he did, did you not see the wheels band? Had he kept back at the first turn of the final lap, he could have drafted at the next one.
Michael would NOT have lifted, you don't what you're talking about, lmao. The man was one of THE most competitive drivers out there and wasn't about to get beat by this punk Montoya. The evidence is there, he didn't even lift in the spot he was in and a lot of people would have. Neither one was going to give the other any chance for that win. The only reason Montoya won was cause he got a great draft off the lapped car. Michael had more balls as a driver doing crazy stuff then anyone else.
@ACOWproductions You sure about that?!! Andretti skills as a racer were really shown up when he raced in F1 in 1993. Senna rang rings around him in practice, qualifying and races before Michael was dropped by Mclaren. Mind you I suppose thats the difference between a genius in a car and a mere mortal................
Well Michael's run in F1 wasn't exactly welcomed by the F1 community. They hated having an American there and the support he got from people was NONE. Senna was the only one who reached out to him. He didn't want to be there by the end of it and left, Which is why McLaren still say he owes them those races. He wasn't let go, he left.
@MissEgasMoniz That's inaccurate actually. He dominated road courses through the 90's more then he ever did ovals. Yes Montoya is a great driver, that's undeniable. However, in this race that lapped car made all the difference for Montoya to gain the little draft he needed to win by a nose. Also, while F1 has great drivers, I wouldn't say all the best drivers in the world are there.
@ACOWproductions I don't agree. The prove is at 2:00. Who lifted? Michael oviously. That shows he would have lifted if he was in Montoya's spot at the end of the race. This race was Monoya's either way.
I saw this live. Just after the commentary on the vid stops, I think Jeremy Shaw chuckled and said "If you've seen a better motor race than that, I want to hear about it".
@garethkielty dude... had andretti been on montoya's spot, andretti would have lifted. In fact had pretty much any other driver in the history of racing been on Montoya's spot, they would have lifted (except maybe senna). It takes more guts than you can possibly imagine to not lift at that moment when you know have nowhere to go if you're on the slipstream of the backmarker and are about to crash him from behind at 230 mph. You could die.
@dfp2101 There is NO way that anybody would lift in an ideal situation for the win. He was wishing that backmarker stays in his path and not Andretti's. Awesome race!
