The problem isn't the vehicle is weak. the problem is that the vehicle is so small that all the deceleration forces must be absorbed by the air bag, because there is nothing there to crumple. There is no crumple zone. You are totally trusting the air bag to save you in every single circumstance.
Then there's the real world. 1800 lb Smart hits a 5500 lb half ton pickup. All things being =, the driver of the smart car looses. There is no technology that can counteract simple physics.
