I spent about 15 minutes in another life doing this stuff with Gene, Don shelton, Ian Freebairnn Smith, etc. etc.. Doesn't sound dissonant to me. Thanks for keeping this vocal art form alive. Not to many young people understand this groove and I really appreciate what you're up to.
@3rdImpression One can obtain it by transcribing it because this arrangement is not published, like many amazing Gene Puerling charts. However, transcribing is an important skill for improving your ears and it means then when you sing unpublished charts you don't have a million other groups singing the same song, like... say... Go The Distance?
Puts me in the mind of Manhattan Transfer..loved that group. You guys sound great! Just became a fan of Danny Fong, just subscribed to his page!! Keep it up!!
@oiznas Yes Puerling! I noticed that little thing and made myself a new track which came out fine. I think the general public doesn't mind too much :)
@MatthewBiller Wow you really are serious. You posted the exact same comment on my last video.
Haven't you ever heard people sing? And listen carefully to Mike Tompkins, because:
1) what you see isn't what you hear
2) it's not a cappella at all: it's vocal samples autotuned and compressed like mad.
It's too bad you can't appreciate such a difference because the video you just watched here was extremely difficult to ACTUALLY sing (and do it well) without cheating, like Mike Tompkins does.
@trudbol What I find quite funny, is that his favorite include your recent video. That video seems to be a bit more compressed than some of your others, but still, NOTHING like Thompkins.
@trudbol I was totally kidding. I didn't think people would take the comment seriously. I've just seen people make the same sort of comments about other multi-trackers "ripping off" or "copying" Mike Tompkins. In a sense I feel some people are trying to give him too much credit for making music with his voice and mouth. While in reality people have been doing it for years, not to mention without auto-tune. Though Mike is helping boost the popularity of a cappella music. Even if it's auto tuned.
@MatthewBiller MFW Danny Fong has been doing this for longer than Mike Tompkins. Danny's first video was on February 1st 2007. Mike's was on July 25th 2007. Look at the upload dates on their first videos. Next time, do your research.
1:16 holy shit Rob has a great voice! Well, you all do, but I hadn't really heard him apart from the others before. Fantastic performance by all, really impressive song
I'm impressed by your ability to sight read and sing apparently comfortably with such dissonance. This genre of music is still beyond my tastes, but I can appreciate the level of difficulty.
To me, dissonance creates a certain tension which has to be released every now & then, the goal being emphasize the story and underlying emotions. Your performance was a bit too dissonant for me and for too long, so it felt sometimes like a vocal exercise more than a performance. But maybe it's just me. ;-)
@trudbol I can appreciate your opinion, perhaps it's more of an acquired taste. The voicings used are often similar to that of a big band, which together always sounds awesome. Singers unlimited stuff is similar to the brass section of the big band. The melody sits on top with the lead trumpet, and then wider intervals for the other trumpets (alanna and my alto), And some guide tones (3rds and 7ths) in the trombones plus a couple other extensions that give the mid section some body,
@daniscool99 Sorry, I really have no clue about all these notions, though I'm sure it must be quite interesting. It's just my immediate impression as a passive viewer with a mild experience for vocal harmonies.
I don't like posting feedback because it sounds so serious. I always enjoy your stuff and want to give you my impressions when I can. Well, you know that. ;-)
The decomposition at the end was very interesting, though I don't really grasp the underlying complexity and construction.
The end part was the coolest. I LOVE how it demonstrated that none of the parts sound as good as the whole. I also love the educational-esque spirit of it.
And then there is the actual song, which is just totally mind blowing.
@michaelcadilhac I don't usually make snide comments, but I'll make an exception by asking michaelcadilhac--what exactly is your point? Who CARES if they're reading music? It's a wonderful rendering of this piece, whether they're reading or not, whether they're standing on their heads or not, whether they're wearing chicken suits or not. Can you do as good a job under ANY circumstances? If this offends you, close your eyes and just listen. @Daniscool--you gave a classy response.
@loydsheryl I think he/she was joking. I am interpreting the ":)" at the end of the message to be a "Tee-hee it's no big deal that you're reading music" rather than an "I am smiling because I see through your lies".
Fantastic! Thanks for your good taste...
