  • Better make sure that towel is thoroughly wrung out... any water dripping into the oil would spell disaster. Water sinks to the bottom where it instantly becomes superheated. The explosive force of the steam blows the burning oil up and out.

  • Scary

  • This almost happened to me! That happened to me! Well I didnt throw water on it... But it was still scary!

  • This happened to me literally less than an hour ago. I was heating oil to make popcorn for my son, the oil caught on fire and the room was filling with smoke and I was thinking of putting water on it but the sink was full of dirty dishes and there was no room to get under the tap. I just threw a towel over it (not a wet one but it still worked) I was in shock and had no idea what to do... I'm so horrified now that this could have been me... :( I feel so stupid & guilty.

  • @rachellhellhell The good thing is that nothing bad happened at the end. Now, if you want to help spread this video, make it available to everybody you know. Because, really, most are oblivious to this potentially lethal or highly harmful combination.

  • You should have a lid for the pan nearby, as I always do with my deep-fryer.

You can also use another frying pan - whatever will seal off the top of the fire and put it out.

The only other solution is a fire extinguisher made for oil fires.

  • I really needed to see this video, seriously. Up until now I didn't think of the idea of my cooking oil catching fire and I was just thinking if it did I would put water on it, but thankfully I saw this video.

  • dam plusika za twarz

  • The lady looks familiar.

  • Unfortunately I don't have all that fireman gear to do this without getting burned.

A chief fireman recommended me to use a lid and avoid the dripping towel.

  • @araranca Your towel shouldn't be dripping- that would make the fire worse. You're supposed to wring it out. I'm not sure how a lid would work out.

  • @araranca You don't need that gear. It was being demonstrated whilst wearing that to show that the person is a pro at putting out fires, and you should listen to the steps.

  • I would not recommend following the advice given in this video. 1) You have to make sure you wring out the wet cloth thoroughly. You don't want to add water to the grease fire. 2) This method requires that you get a little too close to the fire to place the cloth over the pan. The best method is use a metal lid or a cookie sheet and slide the lid/cookie sheet over the pan until it's covered. This will extinguish the fire, but you have to let is sufficiently cool down before removing the lid

  • @mdengle1 Now, why do you suppose they'd have trained fireman in a Public Service Announcement doing what you "wouldn't recommend"? If one doesn't have a suitable lid for a pot or fry pan, a wet towel is a suitable substitute; it works by cutting off oxygen to the flame and smothering it. Even if some water were to drip from the towel into the vessel, any frothing or spraying would be contained.

  • @upajos I have a degree in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering from a 4 year university and I've been working in this profession for 10+ years. So, I'm not just a random teenage making comments. This method was promoted by UK, but I disagree it as the best method to use. There's a video on youtube by NBC Today's show posted on 4/23/07 that shows a better method in my opinion.

  • @mdengle1 You must be referring to video 6Bvwtr6mdF0. I found another one from the CBS Early Show at PyrbiU0sB4s. I never considered the possibility of only PARTIALLY covering the burning pan with the wet towel and then trying to reposition it, so I agree with your comment.

  • @upajos thanks for sharing the CBS Early Show video. It also lists some of the reasons why the wet towel method should not be used. Just FYI...36 people have died since 11/24 in residential fires in the US. Let's keep it safe out there.

  • This happened to me this afternoon... And its frickin' no joke! Actually me and my dad were calm when the pan caught fire... My dad went inside to get a cloth when our neighbor put water into the pan (BECAUSE THEY DON'T KNOW ITS DANGEROUS argghhh!!!) Good thing we're outside!!! My GOD! That was frightening... I'm literally shaking for 20 minutes...

  • @platinumski How did you put it out in the end?

  • @BigOto2 After the big "blast" for like 5 seconds, the fire was put out by itself.

The blast was traumatic though bec. I was so near it, and it went up more than 8 meters...

  • I wish my sister knew how to do with yesterday when she was alone with her boyfriend

  • OMG i wanna make that giant explosion!

  • @WhySoSerious663 Without the nasty side effects I suppose?

  • if my kitchen had a grease fur u would just start panicing and run out

  • The woman at the end looked like Michael Jackson lol

  • @MissKatieMoose isn't funny

  • @MissKatieMoose ik!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • they played this video in science and a kid almost pissed his pants! he said the vid was hella creepy!

  • This things ever happen in my kitchen.

I use wood chopping block to close the pan and it works.

  • @tomkarkai

im from europe, dont understand everything. Would you please write the captions, thank you

  • if ur face is made of wax

  • very useful ..

  • thats creepy

  • here its called the fire department. not the fire brigade.

  • omg that's insane. you should tell everyone about this.

  • saw this in culinary class. that's some scary stuff

  • wow ithought if u put water in it it would take out the fire i saw this video in my science class i fell srry for her

  • DUDE!! I had a major grease fire today, panicked, put a lid on it... Didn't know whether to throw a bottled water i had near by on it.. good thing i didn't. WHEW!

  • i threw water on it one time... and it boiled up big time but not as bad as pictured... I was lucky. all it takes is a damp rag

  • she's a burn victim...

  • i just had a grease fire today and i burned both of my hands =(

  • this was happend with me and this video helped me

    Thx !!!!

  • My cousin is a firefighter he said theres a few things those guys can use flour, baking soda and a couple other things i forgot what all he said

  • Bad info! DO NOT throw sugar or flour on a grease fire. One cup of either creates the explosive force of two sticks of dynamite!

  • @TheE85racer its not sugar its baking soda u need to use or cover it with a wet shirt.

  • @MrRawr789 Salt works too or a metal lid... Any non flammable/combustable surface that can cover and suffocate the fire works.

  • @TheE85racer Well why whould you do that ? i dont mean 2 be smart but in a fire situation what would you decide "ohh wheres the sugar and flour il use that to put it out!!!" i dont think many people would do that! So i dont think its required info in the add.

  • Flour? He's fucking insane!

  • salt?

  • actually, 1 cup of salt or flour is equivelant to 2 sticks of dynomite.

  • very effective. everyone needs to see this.

  • :s its about time i see this video lol... i happened to me last week lol... thank god the damage is not that great...

  • Comment removed

  • what a inspiring video

  • how come they don't show this on tv

  • should be

i work in a fine dining kitchen, and ibelieve this should be shown to everyone.

  • it's from 2001 i think

  • they did this is were i first saw this video from and know what to do this was quite some time ago b4 they started doing the push the button on your smoke alarm 1

  • The government makes the only decent TV adverts in the UK, especially the police.

  • the last part was so depressing...

  • this video would have really helped before i put water on the oil fire in my kitchen and got my arm burned... i posted a video and everything... :(

  • dont use a wet cloth, use a pan lid and call the fire brigade.

  • my mother thinks i am going to burn the house down all the time while cooking so she sent me this twice. i acknowledged that i got it. she writes back, "i thought it was good to know not to throw water on the fire." i replied, "yes, i got that that was both the denoumout and the main message of the plot." my father said he sometimes can't tell the different between british humor and british drama. but it's funny when your mother sends you one of these things.

  • atually fire fighters no longer condone that as sensible action because it has two problems one if the towell is too dry it will catch fire 2 if the towell is too wet and drips it will cause a fire ball like in the video so the only advice they how give is to turn off heat if possibe and get out call fire service and leave it to them

  • thanks for the info

  • Take a look at her face and you will discern that she is a burn victim -- presumably because she did not know how to extinguish such a fire.

  • Hopefully so.

  • that things happen easiar than we thought, just see my vid of my kitchen yesterday...

  • my grill went on fire today it was a tiny fire but me and my neighbour called 999 every thing is fine now [i need a new cooker] but i was like 4 hours cleaning the mess i was lucky

  • Also, do not throw sugar or flour on a grease fire. One cup creates the explosive force of two sticks of dynamite!

  • Ignorance Strikes Again! ~sigh~

  • way to b a dick

  • good point to the video

  • my kids and I watched this today. It kinda shakes you up. Thank you very much for making this. Very clear and to the point.

  • dude that chick freaks me out

  • the woman knows!

  • yeah i know its sad i lost my cooker in a tiny kitchen fire today but im fine and so is everything else but i was red faced due to embarecment not burns

  • my bf ran to safeway to buy something and i left at home cooking, i accidentally left the pan and went pee in seconds, when i came back i saw our pan on fire, i panicked and threw it in the sink and turn on the faucet. it exploded like a bomb in front of me, luckily i didnt get burn or the house. i was shocked and shakin when my bf arrive, i cried alot. the celling was dark and the house smell smoke, i face felt so warm and i thought i burnt my hair too.
