to anyone thinking this song is about 9/11... you are so wrong. It's about the battle within everyone of us, to recognize our potential. It's a song about self-reflection.
The evolution of thier madness has turned its ugly head to reviel where we are going. The policestate is here and has been for quite awhile now. The inside jobs are running amuck and its a pleathera of apathy and destruction. The will to get through all this coming madness is in each of us if only we choose to express it in a positive manner for the betterment of mankind. We will win this thing....this I believe!

Damn this is a beast of a track! Wow, just to think the point of my life that I was at when it came out. Now here I am and not too much has changed. On the flipside, a lot has happened since 06. I am so pumped they released Backspacer! They better keep putting out music!
The reason it's so different is because this is the first song that Mike wrote the lyrics for. This song sums up the ordeal from his drug addiction and him getting over it.
If you look at a lot of the songs they play live, Eddie seems to turn towards Stone a lot while he's singing(because stone writes a lot of the songs too), but in this one, he's leaning towards Mike because he knows what Mike went through, then again, I'm guessing, he could just be staring at him for writing a kick-ass song.
Brilliant song! The first 22secs of this song always sends chills down my spine. I believe McCready wrote this song in regards to his bout with alcoholism -- correct me if im wrong. I also relate to this song when I was battling the same addiction 2yrs ago... Pearl Jam seems to always have a song for every aspect of one's life.
This song has one of my favorite lyrics in it, 'I choose to feel...as I am' I'm glad he sings it twice. Also, yeah, depressing and even more so if you're depressed as well. I could listen to that open over and over and over again...

does this song have something to do with 9/11... cause the lyrics don't really give much away
Diabolous3x 2 years ago
From what I can tell it has nothing to do with 9/11.
It was written by Mike McCready and it comes across as self-reflective more than anything.

mike's work is usually quite introspective. i think a lot of it might be to do with his past alcoholism. mike is fantastic.

no, it's about mike mccready's addiction to drugs.
