  • does anyone agree with me that in the US, almost all my life living in orange county, (idk about all high schools in the states) they pound only certain information into our heads and rush through everyting just so we can get high scores on SATs & such??

I don't feel they don't feed us the information good enough. I know it our responsibilty as kids to study ourselves, but it just sucks that for having the best school & a free education... the way some of the teachers teach sucks :(

  • @smgbby Here in norway we have (7 years ago when I went to school at least) a nice schoolday with few hours, but the culture of learning was different. It'd be embarressing to the other students, in my social circle/class at least, if you underperformed in certain ways (Like being lazy). Also I can't emphasize enough how insane american teacher requirements are. The local teachers union here flared with anger when a teacher without a subject matter degree got a teaching job.

  • @smgbby That was in secondary or primary school I think. Tell me if my impressions are wrong, do teachers in the US get degrees in biology to teach biology?

Also as I noticed that the culture among highly educated ppl between themselves is different, the cold hard truth is that such a job culture and education system culture is just better.

On a sidenote I've heard stories of western employers in korea who wouldn't hire South Korean ace students because they know they have no social skills.

  • @stiaa04 usually yes they will teach biology in college or high school :)

& yes one thing very important in US is and must be social skills...you have to be able to know when even put on a fake persoanlity ALL THE TIME it sucks hehe but yes thats the way it is :/ So yes I see why they wouldn't hire South koreans because they may lack the quality to be able to communicate well...which I don't agree with...if they have the brains give them the job!!

  • @smgbby

You said: "yes they will teach biology in college or high school" I think you misunderstood me I DIDN'T write "Do teachers in the US teach biology?"

    I wrote:

"Do teachers in the us GET DEGREES in biology to teach biology" in other words do they have a degree in the spesific content of the subject they teach?

  • @stiaa04 no us in Amerika is dumbies. we no kno biolgy cuz we 2 stoopid. u toooo smart for us stoopid heds. wat biogy?

  • @CryInTheAttic I don't get your point. I'm asking because people have given the impression from some places that you can get a 'teaching license' in america (whatever that entails) without having a degree in the spesific field.

  • If I have kids, I would not let them study in South Korea or countries with similar characteristics. I want them to have normal life. Education never guarantees successful life.

  • Well we're talking two extremes. Every system has flaws. Flaws in American education system is monopoly by teacher's union where teachers or school don't have to work hard to teach kids. No reward for doing good job teaching. And you're locked by your zip code where you should go to school. Problem with Korea is too much competition and education that's way too structured. Still if I had to choose, I'd say Korean education is better. Except for university.

  • @Xentradi97 In what way... in Korea its more work for less reward, here in Britain we have some of the best uni;s in the world and you really don't have to study that hard to get into one... The social effects of all this study and no play for kids is well documented.. and you say except for university.. well thast like the most important thing, regardless of what secondary school you got to, if you get into a great uni you're set...

  • @Danoftouni I said it's better except for Universities. From Elementary to highschool, Under Korean system it excels in education, degree of knowledge, learning and discipline. It fails behind the western education however, in university system, where student is given more liberty to think and do for themselves. Korean and education largely trains kids to follow. Western education train them to lead.

  • @Xentradi97 Its not better... kids arent really allowed to be kids...(or so it seems) study study study...

  • The Korean school system is considered to be one of the best in the world.

  • hello does enybody knows how is the quality of higher education in Korea ? Namely Computer Science. Thanx!

  • @so2murad

Korean universities do not really rank that high on international rankings- Most of the highest ranked universities are from the USA or Western Europe.

There are some good universities in Korea such as Seoul National, but there are also a lot of really crappy universities.

  • @so2murad

Education is also a lot more mechanical in Korea than the west, that is it is more based on text books and remembering large chunks of data. Essay writing and analytical work is not given as much attention as simply remembering slabs of technical information.

  • @marxian00 I see now. Thanx a lot!
