  • hahaha "SHEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT"

  • w ww.rehblogs.blogspot.com

  • You come for the king, you best not miss...

  • Thank God theres 5 seasons now lol

  • The Wire has objective reasons as to why it's the best: Unparalled realism, scope and social revelance and depth. No other fictional show compares in these areas.

The Sopranos has a great first season but isn't that amazing of a show. People need get off Tony Soprano's dick, it isn't the year 2000 anymore, people - far better and tightly written shows like The Wire, Six Feet Under, Breaking Bad and Deadwood have come out since then.

  • I prefer Doctor Who.

But agreed. The Wire is a masterpiece of dramatic storytelling.

  • I remember this charlie before the haircut

  • Comment removed

  • I've added this to my watchlist for when I finish it all - does it contain any spoilers? I've seen season 1,2 and most of 3

  • @mbagely Not at all. Enjot the rest of the seasons. The Best Show ever made.

  • Nice spoiler with Wallace's corpse, there

  • I added Charlie Brooker and Omar Little to 'the people that inspire me' on Facebook

  • If we wasn't such a hipster i'd probably like this guy.

  • He didn't mention snoop. She's the best character IMO.

  • @tampacop this was broadcast before season 3 had been shown in the UK, therefore Charlie didn't know about her at this point. I agree she's the best character though :)

  • the wire is soooooo good

  • This guy is not joking. I finished Season 3 and like he says "Its fucking brilliant". Best TV series I've seen.

  • West's accent it is so good! i had absolutely no idea he was an english actor until i had watched about 4 seasons, and in fact i came to think of him as the archetypal baltimore character

  • anyone wanna send me the dvds free of charge? like lending a book, i'll send them back.

  • I wish I could forget The Wire in order to re-watch it... God damn show has spoiled me rotten.

  • @XionXi amen to that!

  • Whoah! Charlie Brooker actually LIKED something?

  • bubbles was a heroin addict not a crackhead...

  • Opinions are neither right or wrong...you are absolutely entitled to your own. I sometimes do love the eloquent way in which people articulate their opinions though, CreditDue52...I am amused...

  • Broadwalk Empire shits all over this in my opinion, but The Wire is good.

  • @CreditDue52 One word reason on why boardwalk empire (a good show) cannot even be muttered in the same sentence as the wire......Authenticity.....and...well...."Cool"....

  • The wire is the greatest TV series of all time.

  • Best TV show in the last 20 years? Lost me there Charlie.

  • @ProjectLonely what's the best then?

  • @lyndabynda How long is a piece of string?

  • @ProjectLonely how about name two tv programmes which are, in your opinion, better than the wire..?

  • @lyndabynda Oh right cool, yeah my opinion? Yeah thats easy then, The Office UK and new Doctor Who. Those two shows I enjoyed..and still do enjoy on re runs over and over again. , I think about them a lot. I read about them a lot , I am fans of. So to say another show is better them to me is laughable. But hey, if you and Charlie think The Wire is the best thats cool...But as I said. he lost me.

  • @ProjectLonely Double half it's length...

  • I'm pretty sure Charlie Brooker could convince me eating my own face would be a good idea

  • can we please have more broadcasts with charlie sitting on his bed in his pajamas? :)

  • Charlie Brooker is the only person on earth who's advice I would accept without a shred of doubt.

  • Charlie Brooker has nothing to moan about, must be really good!

I have seen it actually and it is as good as he says. What I'd as to his review is that its not really about cops and drug dealers, its really a detailed picture of the city of Baltimore, everything from the dock worker and the school kid to the mayor and the chief of police, even extenidng up to the federal government in parts. Its a study of all the social, politcal, cultural and economic workings of a city. Its brilliant.

  • that freeze frame of some nameles dumbfounded fellow was unadvertedly brilliant...I felt like it was a mirror :p

  • @conceitarturo Said fellow was American comedian/professional angry old man Lewis Black.

  • @conceitarturo unadvertedly?

  • @lyndabynda ok, inadvertently. wow, complicated word :p sure, that wasnt the best written comment ever.

  • Thought wire was good, but I don't have a hard-on for it like most people. OVERATED

  • Charlie Brooker should review Breaking Bad.

  • Man now i know Wallace gets killed, i'm only on episode 8...

  • Charlie Brooker applauding something feels so wrong, like the world is upside down

  • Watching The Wire makes you obvlivous to quality in other tv shows, it is just a staggering achievment of characterisation. Personally, the screenplay in The Wire is unmatched by any tv show AND film I've ever seen. It should be held up as a benchmark for all future productions, they'll probably never come close though.

  • @beanieboy91 Band of Brothers was definitely as good if not better than The Wire, but to be fair it is better than pretty much any film as well.

  • I think I'm going to be watching the entire season again soon, this always gets me in the mood. Brooker is spot on with this review, absolute perfection. Nothing is as good, and I've tried most shows.

  • Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit

  • Guy at the end 3:57 WIN WIN WIN

  • Dennis 'Cutty' Wise for best character in S3.

  • @alzico agreed. I literally wanted to cry every time I saw him on screen. He was a cross between a gangster and a puppy. I was surprised to see him off screen in an interview and he was not at all like his character. Those decisions were intentional!!

  • Season 3 is just a fuckin masterpeice.

  • Never trust anybody who dislikes The Wire.

  • just finished watching all five seasons + extras in 4 days. not too bad really. the whole thing could have ben done in 3 seasons, anyway i think it's overated, just another fucken police series with lots of killings. it won't top the sopranos in my likings. and i never watch tv series with fake laughs cause 99% of the times there's really nothing to laugh about, that's why the laughs

  • @AbcadefGhiJklman : After watching the whole series, I can't believe you would call it, "just another cop show". Your preferences though. The Sopranos is awesome to.

  • @Notebookwriter1 actually what i meant was that i'm quite sick and tired of all these liutenants, detectives, private i's etc.... (why can't these screen writers just write a truthful story about most criminals getting away with it for a change) the wire is the best cop series so far (thanks to the extra killings and cursing) personally i think the cursing could have been a lot more artistic, which i'm pretty good at in 2 languages

  • Idris Elba is definitely a north london boy, hackney i think

  • Bubbles isn't a crackhead.

  • The Wire is dogshit, I would rather lick up dogshit than waste my life watching pointless tiresome like the wire

  • @fancythathat You are the only person I've ever seen who's posted anything negative about the show. If you had any balls, you would've posted what you watch.

  • @CertifiedGooner729 I watch anything but Arsenal

  • @fancythathat

Er...that's not even an argument, it's not even close to a coherent sentence. Had you actually raised any points to support you vacuous assertion that it's ''Dogshit'' maybe your comment wouldn't have been so pointless. If you think it's tiresome, then you obviously don't understand it or its depth. Perhaps you didn't watch the clip about my comment? He backs up the fact that Simon *wanted* it to unfold like a novel, because that's what Police work and the streets are really like

  • @fancythathat

It's hilarious that you find The Wire ''Tiresome'' yet gave no examples of what Television should be like, nor why it's tiresome. But when you I clicked your profile I only see one Television show and thats ''Empire of Cricket''.

    Oh, the irony..

  • @fancythathat YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVENT WATCHED MORE THAN 1 EPISODE AND IF YOU DID YOU ARE JUST TO FUCKING STUPID TO FOLLOW THE COMPLEXITY OF THE SHOW

  • @Levination I am being called stupid by someone who uses all cap and no punctuation.

  • @fancythathat caps lock was on bitch ( I'm not a little girl so i didn't need to change it ) and just the fact that you point that out shows that the only thing you have to point out is pathetic.

UR A FUCKING IDIOT and just in case you don't understand, you're a fucking idiot!

  • @Levination Its clear that you are the real idiot here little girl.

  • Also, Generation Kill, another brilliant David Simon creation. A funny, tragic, clever articulation of the clusterfuck that was Bush Jnr's Iraq invasion.

  • @elephantarmy

Doesn't quite reach the dizzying heights of The Wire. But for anyone looking to fill the void left by it you can't do much better than this. David Simon's writing should go down in history along side the greatest novelists.

  • OZ is far better than Sopranos and The Wire!!

  • @Japashka im checking that out next, i heard its a great show, but most people who have seen both seem to prefer the wire. Ill keep an open mind though"

  • @Japashka Oz was great up until season 4... The pill thing, what were they thinking?!

  • @Japashka OZ was a great show,. don't get me wrong, but The Wire had....everything. Absolutely everything. Not a bad actor, not a bad plot line, no glaring plot holes, no sanctimonious message just how it is, no crowbarred storyline. It was literally flawless.

  • The wire OMG The Wire best television show ecer period the end. The relationship between Avon and Stringer is well thats just a heartbreaking storyline especially when there on Avons balcony reminiscing at the end of season 3. Wow

  • I love The Wire but The Sopranos is definitely the best TV show ever.

  • I just happened upon "The Wire" a week ago. Never saw it before. I had lived in Baltimore until 1996, retired as a P.O. and thought I knew something. Ha! Now, I'm getting educated...big time. I'm addicted. Bought or rented every dvd and spend my days and evenings watching and experiencing the Baltimore I never understood. Is "The Wire" good? It is beyond television; beyond great. It is simply "Beyond",,,somewhere in a space and time of its own. Rod Serling was my favorite tv writer ...was!

  • Charlie Brooker is a twat, used to like tvgohome and screenburn but now he is just an alternative Richard Littlejohn mainstream cunt.

  • Comment removed

  • Oz , The Wire and The Shield. It's like choosing between children.

  • i really wanna know what it feels like to get brooker's approval, it must be worthed more than an oscar.

  • At allbok. Ur crazy thinking sopranos was better. Sopranos was very good, James gandolfini is the man. But come on for real? Against the Wire? Lest than a handful of the The Wire character shuts sopranoes DOWN. I won't even get into the difference of feel and authenticity. You just need to watch the Wire again. That's all.

  • The Wire is very good, The Shield is amazing,

  • @no0neiv the wire pisses all over the shield, I mean c'mon, an entirely different league

  • I love this guy.

  • Also, I'm of the opinion that The Sopranos is about half as good as The Wire. The Sopranos is so uneven, inconsistent, with so many plotlines that go nowhere and crappy episodes amongst great ones. SFU is better than it as well.

  • @jaredowty While The Wire is the best thing I've seen on television, I completely understand the argument for The Sopranos. The Wire is the kind of show that film-lovers think is the best TV show of all time, which is a statement that probably rubs TV-lovers the wrong way. The Wire is structured like a mini-series. It's like five 10-13 hour films cut into hour-long pieces. Whereas TV is usually serialised with stand-alone stories in each episode (or a theme). The Wire has no stand-alone quality.

  • Even Charlie Brooker can't dislike the Wire, its just that good!

  • LONG LIVE BUNK

  • Never watched it but I will now.

  • if you don't like The Wire... we can't be friends.

  • best thing ever

  • Comment removed

  • He so speaks the truth, The Wire is quite simply in a class of it's own - ***** 5 stars.

  • for ages I thought the channel called schmapp n'schmazz was a charlie brooker side project.

    Go charlie!

  • Whole heartedly agree. The wire is a masterpiece.

  • what? Charlie Brooker being positive about something?

  • @TheCoffee195 right? i watched the first minute with a "ok where's the trick" sort of feeling

  • Comment removed

  • I've watched the first six episodes of the wire. I'm enjoying it but, I am a huge Sopranos fan and so far, I'm nowhere near convinced it's better. I'll keep with it though and I won't judge until I've seen all the seasons. One thing though, "realistic" does not always mean better. I get enough reality as it is. Secondly, I have not laughed once. I know it's supposed to be gritty etc, but comedy is as vital as tragedy. It's a slow burner alright...

  • @BaronMilkington - I think there's plenty of humour in The Wire actually, but I guess humour is very subjective. Personally I think the Sopranos is merely very very good, while The Wire exists in a stratosphere all its own. Definitely stick with it! Season 2 is possibly the weakest of the lot, but Seasons 3 and 4 in particular are simply amazing.

  • @krismon76 season 2s amaziing.

  • @tris421 maybe i need to watch it again. I guess its a personal thing, I didn't find the lives of the white working class guys as interesting as the Barksdale crew. It's a huge shift in focus from the first season and takes a few eps to get into. It's still awesome though.

  • @krismon76

yeah i see your point, i dno i guess i engaged with frank and nick really well. and the final walk under the bridge is just heart breaking. also the greeks are the ultimate bad guys, while i loved how it opened up the city and it began the development of the show. also classic moments, like the omar court scene....

  • @krismon76 Indeed. It takes a really special show to actually make me feel something close to heatbreak for the demise of the relationship between lifelong friends Sringer and Avon - two characters we should probably hate, some of their scenes together in S3 top anything The Sopranos ever gave us.

  • @BaronMilkington I felt the same way as you midway through season one, I couldn't see how anyone could compare it to Six Feet Under or Dexter. But after finishing the whole series, I can safely say that it beats the shit out of those shows and every other show, too. There isn't a single weak season or episode, it gets better with each viewing, and there are no wasted characters or plotlines. I've seen it five times and I still notice a ton of new subtleties (and humor). :)

  • i watched the wire and sopranos both amazing but sopranos was better

  • Comment removed

  • fantastic review

  • I really can,t say enough good things about The Wire. It has such an rich societal analysis which I haven,t seen in any other series. A modern classic, like the Sopranos

  • 3:55!!! :DDD

  • Update. 5 seasons in a box set these days. Thanks Brooker for this and Deadwood.

  • He refers to Bubbles as a "crackhead", which isn't accurate. He's a heroin addict, which has very different implications in his personality. Also, he does struggle to get himself clean throughout the series.

  • Boardwalk Empire is a show which is shaping up to be a quality.

  • recently i started watching boardwalk empire. an amazing show, right up there with the sopranos. but putting those shows together still comes nowehere close to the wire

  • @donorleone that starts in the uk soon, i cant wait, am i right in thinking omar is in it? any other wire actors? cheers

  • @ultimatedynamo1 im in the uk but ive just been watching it online. yeh he is but he isn't such a major character. There's a few recognisable people from the sopranos (carmellas dad, the new york consigliere as well as buscemi of course) but they play very minor roles. Apart from that no one really but then i'm only five episodes in

  • And That is a Fucking Understatement Mr. Brooker.

  • I actually never new this about The Wire, I thought it was just another cop t.v. series. I thought wrong. Charlie Brooker is a legend.

  • Twin Peaks is still the best

  • Sounds good. I'll look into it. In return, check out Rome for me.

  • The Wire is amazingly realistic in its portrayal of Polticics and Public Services.

Corrupt politicians trying to save their skin and earn a buck results in the ridiculously unefficient Police Force.

Winning The War on Drugs is impossible, even in theory, and is only consuming taxpayer money and police efforts that could be better spent elsewhere.

  • I wish The Wire went on to Annapolis and the return of Marlo etc. Great TV.

  • I'm still trying to find another show as great as this. If only I can forget this show so that I can watch it again for the very first time!

  • I miss my regular hit of WIre goodness so bad that I've taken to rubbing talc in my face and threatening to give my pals a good whacking. Scarey

  • Idris Elba is from HACKNEY (EAST LONDON) not Brixton (South London!!)

  • best show ever, reviewed by best tv reviewer of the last 20 years. When's screenwipe back????

2010 review was excellent, avatar review was right on !

  • The Wire ruined television for me. Everything I've watched since pales in comparison.

  • @cinenglland I hear ya

  • @cinenglland what are some options... i'm dying here.

  • @spiltbluhd lol not quite The Wire, but try the shield, southland, sons of anarchy, spartacus blood and sand

  • @spiltbluhd Definitely check out Generation Kill and The Corner if you haven't seen them... David Simon had his hand in them... nuff said...

  • @cinenglland the bbc's ashes to ashes did the same to me. if you haven't seen that i'd reccomend it

  • @cinenglland the wire was the first show i ever watched episode 1 - episode 60 start to finish and ive been searching ever since and few shows even come close but none compare the wire will always be number 1.

thumbs up if omar is your favorite character.

  • @Levination give Friday Night Lights a go, outstanding show

  • @Levination Freamon man gotta love that guy

  • @Levination try "the corner"

  • @Levination try Mad Men...

  • @Levination The Sopranos and Breaking Bad trump it imo

  • @cinenglland - Check out Justified and Spartacus (either series). They're not The Wire, but you'll enjoy them.

  • @cinenglland

Try Breaking Bad. It's definitely not better, but possibly as good.

  • charlie go it wrong the wire is 2nd - to the show Screen wipe :D

  • @jonanice If I was a robot, my head would explode! The wire is no. 1... but Charlie is God... does not compute... que explosion sound effect.

  • @artspooner wtf r u on

  • The Sopranos the best in my opinion, then The Wire!!

  • Notice that there are not any high speed car chases? There are not any last-second unbelievable rescues in the show? That is part of what makes it real to me.

  • I hate people like him.

  • Best show on earth ever.

  • The Wire is fucking brilliant. That's all there is to it.

  • à vrai dire The Wire a été traduit en francais et a été diffusé y'a quelques temps sur France Ô, vu quelques bouts et le doublage était franchement catastrophique...ceci dit j'ai eu du mal à décrocher hahaha

  • I watched season 1 and couldn't get into it. I was surprised because I really enjoyed 'Homicide: Life on the Street' and 'The Shield'.

  • @calvin624

If you're unable to like the wire, in Darwinian terms, I think it's better if you shoot yourself

  • @calvin624

Don't worry, you're not the only one. I love the Wire and The Shield but they are pretty different.

  • @calvin624 I'll agree with the Wire starting out really slow. Its not until 5-6 episodes in where things get really interesting. You have to understand this show is just huge, they want to set the foundation including the characters etc before shaking things up. Its like a giant chess board, and when something happens you need to see the ripples throughout the board. By the end of Season 1 and the start of season 2 you'll probably be well hooked onto the show.

  • @bamb0ostick Yeah I watched season 1, and a bit of season 2 but never got that urge to go on. Oh well I have the boxset so I guess I'll get round to it one day.

  • The last sentence sums it up perfectly : it is just fucking brilliant. Glad that this show hasn't been translated in French, it would have ruined the characters.

  • MY NAME IS MAH NAME

  • After The Wire...TV Ain't The Same

  • word

  • its because of this one video n my love for charlton brooker that i actually watched the wire n im so glad i have, it is simply the best

  • I love this, best review of a show ever.."If you like good drama, you have absolutely no excuse for not indulging in this; it is just fucking brilliant"

  • He said in the a Guardian article that the actors who play omar and bubbles recognised him from watching this clip. He said it was the best moment of his life!

  • his cliche anger and venting is disingenuous and staged yet still rather funny. Middleclass anger I call it.

  • @TroutMaskReplicaa

Yup, only the toffs and the plebs feel genuine emotion don't'cha know.

  • @Restayvien yeh just like humour, only the 'plebs' achieve a status with it.

  • Fucking brilliant indeed, Charlie.

  • Oh man, whenever someone mentions The Wire I have the almost uncontrollable urge to just rave about it. I love, love, love this show. I'm a HUGE movie nut and this series trumps pretty much everything I've ever seen. It's easily as good as The Godfather movies, and I don't give that praise lightly.

  • @bvanlier Amen.

  • BEST. TV. SHOW. EVER.
