The Showmen were from Virginia Beach Va. and recorded this song in the late 50's. It sat on the shelf until 1965 when WBAG in Burlington NC started playing it and it became a regional Beach Music hit in the Carolinas. Bill Kennedy brought them to Greensboro NC, put them on the circuit and they became one of the most popular acts in Beach Music.
@TheKenadkins Living in the Piedmont area of NC, the General has always been a local hero. Thanks for some good history I didn't know, and thanks for helping to keep Beaqch Music alive.
Oh my God, what a blast from the past. This was my song in high school. We have so many memories from this song. This band played at my senior prom in 1970. How wonderful.
Gotta be the best Beach Music song of all time! Catching the Showmen live was a highlight of my time at the University of GA...Way back when. General Johnson, thank you for the great vocals- RIP.
The group was originally from Norfolk VA (same place where Gary "US" Bonds came from), known as the Humdingers. If the lead singer sounds a little familiar in some later recordings, it's because he left the group in the late 60's to become lead singer for Chairmen of the Board.
did this guy singing go on to be general johnson of the chairman of the board ??
