Looking at the 1st code shown makes me think the computer models' code should also be looked at - it likely has similar fudges, when the output wasn't acceptable. I'm only speculating, and I know CRU didn't do any model code, but the thinking at CRU is VERY likely to have been shared among the climate modelers, too. The models are where a HUGE amount of the money goes. The vested interest to show warming is strongest there.

The adjusted data is to do with tree ring divergence from other measurements and how the tree ring data has been phased out in a combined temperature reading.

The point being that everyone seems to think this has only come to light because of the hacked emails, but this fact was written about by these very scientists in their own paper. They point it out and say that it needs further investigating, so everyone who thinks the hacking has uncovered something are quite mistaken.

For some reason youtube isn't displaying my own comment to me. However, I remember that I had asked "why" scientists would want to fudge the data. I also pointed out that throughout history there has been struggles in the scientific community with new data, especially if a theory has been debunked. However, when a theory has been debunked, it is. Sometimes it takes a while for everyone to accept it, but there has never been a cover-up. Just look up the history of Aether in science.

I can't see your original comment either for some reason. In any case, the "why" here is politics and money. A lot of this research is funded by organizations which are expecting certain results. Essentially, if these researchers don't tell their sponsors what they want to hear, they lose their funding and their jobs. Science is itself a noble profession when approached objectively, but like anything else, it can be corrupted. The ones to look at are those who commissioned and funded the work.

There are many people with money who don't like these results as well. Unless it can be established that pretty much the entire scientific community that is involved in this matter has been paid off, then I don't see a reason to assume so. If I heard about a peer reviewed paper that questioned or refuted the claims about global warming, then I would consider it a credible complaint. There is a lot of money going into disproving them, so it's clearly not just an issue of what the money wants.

Read Chomsky. To manufacture consent doesn't need a backroom deal. Just an influential group of otherwise unrelated individuals with common interests, values, and assumptions. And, viola, biases get baked in the cake and pass as fact. One example: Do you think most climate scientists ever investigate the possible errors in individual bits of data that corresponded with their assumptions as closely as they do to explain away data that diverges? What happens when this is repeated X 1000 or so?

That is a problem, obvious. However, because of how peer review works, eventually the error would be pointed out. Until that happens, it's best to assume the theory currently considered the best is the best theory we have. When someone finds the error, and fixes the theory, we will use that new information as our basis of assumption and bias. No conspiracy here.

That's why data should be shared freely, with critics. When you assume your conclusions are correct, and this assumption is backed up by the fact that so many others assume the same, you can think you're justified in simply dismissing critics and even finding ways to shut out critical voices, rather than putting your ideas to the test by engaging with opposing viewpoints. Which brings us away from scientific knowledge and back to religious faith. Like I said, no conspiracy needed.

Great analysis, and yeah, its pretty clear from the code commenting that there are entire chunks of code designed to deliberately fudge the data expressed in the composite model.

This praxis is further validated by direct reference to associative methods in the emails, if that material is genuine, and it seems to be its damning stuff.

Why do i have a sinking suspicion that UN sources deliberately leaked this stuff though, so they could later say "look its all fake, and you were all excited."

Well I've just spent 24 hours trying to get Great Circle Distance calculations working in Fortran, with precisely no success. I've tried the simple method (as used in Tim O's geodistpro, and the more complex and accurate method found elsewhere (wiki and other places). Neither give me results that are anything near reality. FFS.

Worked out an algorithm from scratch. It seems to give better answers than the others, so we'll go with that.
