Spartans are basically the "Special Ops" of today. The beginning of 300 was entirely accurate, they did throw weak or disfigured babies unfit to become a Spartan over cliffs. They spent the entirety of their lives training to become warriors. They did so well because they had a strategic location whereas numbers counted for nothing. They gave Athenians ample time to

2200 Spartans (1300 hoplites and 900 healots)

3000 other Peloponnesians (including Mantineans, Tegeans, Arcadians, Corinthians, Phlians and Mycenaeans)

3100 other Greeks (including Thespians, Melians, Thebans, Phocians and Opuntian Locrians)

Spartans (300) are just a fairy tale.

Spartan Hoplites differed in this way because they were forced into service yet they weren't slaves. Also there WERE 300 Spartans 700 Thespians and 400 Thebans. And hundreds of others that the vast majority were killed. Knowing the Greeks were outflanked he let them fall back and stayed to cover the retreat.

From what I can understand a more impressive battle was fought by the Athenians, with ship of equivalent maneuverability and speed the Athenians had to fight a battle that their enemy was bigger and just as good as they were. While the Spartans were head and shoulders(and probably groin, hips and knees) above their opponent. Thats from what I heard though.

Their leader died early on, there was a lot of battle just to control his body. When they finally did all die, it was not 50,000 but about 10,000 spartans and others who fought and won against the Persians. However, the Spartans were later "exterminated" by natural and manmade means.

They fought(or fighted I don'y now)5 days and in the fifth day only stayed at Thermopylae: 300 spartans, 700 tespians and 400 thebans as hostages. The other ones went to their own city to organize the army(at Salamis later and 1 year later at Plataea).
