  • 0.43 i want crack :D

  • his last words were good bye i love you be good

  • @Babygirl91580. If they didn't put him through all that training, he would just be a regular parrot. I do agree with you though, he is amazing!

  • 英語の教科書で見ました!

    alexすごい!ヾ(≧∇≦)

  • Makes me wonder what are the most intelligent animals are, I'm sure there's a PECKING order. :<))

I'm not sure which was the pet but he would certinly qualify as a family member in any home, he's closer to a child. I have heard people say that what separates man from animals is that animals cannot reason, so they cannot have a soul. Ahem... this raises many questions, doesn't it?

  • Alex and I are the same age. I wish I could have met him. Such a beautiful creature

  • i so sorry about alex and :(

  • I learned about him in English class today =) ♥

  • i remember the day alex died. i was very sad.

  • omg man this is so cute and amazing parot wow....to think of the next eveolution of parots in the future decadaes centuries maybe...more will be like him and they will be better..soon talk perfectly, then with accents, (like depending where they were tought, asia, indian, eureope, north america, middle east, etc. then it will be normal man!!! and we would be havingt talking birds!!!! like TV!! OMG! and ITL BE A TV SHOW! with a dude and his bird friend and they chill!! smoke weed!AHHHH EVOLUTION!

  • i have an african gray parrot and he talks like a human being so funny!:D love him. He never said anything bad so wierd:/ but love african gray parrots. It is the best parrot in the world:D

  • you guys are disgusting me.

everyone is saying dr. pepperburg abused him, and their wrong.

dr irene loved alex very much and cared for him.

  • I have seen some videos of him...and how he has simplistic conversations with people! A genius in the Animal Kingdom.

Humans have to take in account that animals have intelligence and feelings, too...for example, I once saw a lemur mother on TV, who had to either take care of her baby, or stay with her group. The announcer said:

"Scientists believe that this lemur was going through a difficult decision."

    Well, duh!

  • LOL at "Go pick up corn!" It sounds like an insult.

  • I cried, smiled and chuckled listening to the audio book. thank you dr pepperberg for sharing alex with the world!

  • im crying cuz of his last words he was an amazing parrot"you be good see you tommarow i love you"ssooo saaaad

    '

  • @joyandjoynesscharlie I read that Alex's last words were "You be good. I love you."

  • I read a book about alex and dr.pepperberg. It was very interesting and also funny. Birds are awesome!!

  • omg he got American accent.

  • He spoke so clearly! What a sweetie he was. Rest in Peace Alex.

  • Love you Alex forever! Pepperberg, keep up the good work! You inspire parrot lovers around the world!

  • oh my god, i cried when i watched this, i cried even harder when he said "see you tomorrow, be good, i love you"

  • Thank you!!

  • i thought they live like 40-60 years :(

  • @aprilsnowflakes They are supposed to :/

  • This is sad. Poor Alex, who had never tasted the joy of flying in his life as a parrot . He could have lived beyond 31 years of age and happier as an ordinary parrot out in the wild. Now Griffin will suffer the same fate as Alex in the hands of Pepperberg.

  • @waing1 You make it sound like Pepperberg treats parrots like she was abusing them. She did what parrots want to do, the experiments weren't torture to Alex, for Alex, they were games. It's not like Pepperberg is beating him or neglecting him. Alex and Pepperberg loved each other and Pepperberg loves parrots, that's why she's doing these experiments. To prove to the world parrots are intelligent and have feelings. And it's not her fault Alex couldn't fly. His wings were clipped from youth.

  • @IDQMF Imagine you are being confined to a wheelchair and have never tasted the joy of walking upright as a human being . Your entire existence is being a subject of someone else's life-long experiment for which the end result is already known. When I watched the videos, I see Alex have asked Pepperberg many times that he wants to go back - meaning he doesn't want to do it anymore but Pepperberg kept forcing him to continue. If this is not mental torture, I don't know what is.

  • @waing1 Living in the wild isn't that easy you know. It's not like other animals or the elements are kinder on average than humans.

  • All ways love you Alex :(

  • No bird brain here!

  • 1:27 BALLZ lol lolz

  • wow. he lived long.

  • aw i start to cry :(

  • "go pick up corn" best thing a parrot has ever said!

  • I hope they did a necropsy and locked at his structures.

  • Who are those 23 demons who clicked thumb down?

  • Alex: Go pick up corn you bitch! LMAO!

  • I love you Alex so fucking much . You were a very good parrot . I love you sweetie . Forever baby :] enjoy parrot heaven ! You will be truly missed . RIP : Alex the parrot :'( 2007 Forever in our hearts :[

  • Alex!!! I miss u!!! RIP good birdie I lve parrots because I have one.

  • :( i miss him

  • My Parrot like this died today. i am well upset it was apart of the family. the shit thing about it is tht i saw him die and i could do fk all about it. i want to no wht he died of because blood came out of his beek. if any 1 has an idea of why tht happend plz email me more about it thanx R.I.P Goerge x

  • @999lazzo did you feed him rice cuz rice makes their stomachs explode

  • The best thing you can do for pet bird is to interact with them.Just like a child or any pet, Alex got that all the time I would not call that animal testing.

  • I love when he says "go pick up corn". So cool.

  • dear alex,

i wish you were my parrot, i wouldnt have put you through trillions of test, just to find out what everybody always knew. it doesnt take a rocket scientest to prove that you were just a special bird. when are these people going to realize that just by studying and putting you thru all the test wont give them a reason on why you were special. I think animal testing should stop

  • Every night, Alex would say: "I love you. You be good. See you tomorrow." to Dr. Pepperburg. How could he have been abused?

  • @cryora ok so forget how every other second the bird was aksing and saying that he wanted to go back.

  • He likes to be playful like that. He asked for water but was only doing it to interrupt.

  • no offence...but he cant really read that.

  • RIP

  • (crying) alex you can't died please i wish i can turn you back to life again please come back i miss you i hope you can go to parrot heaven

  • oh please.....

  • cute little bastard. I hope there is a parrot heaven...

  • he could go to school and teach childreen these days what effort and practicing means

  • OMG his last words made me tear up! D,:

  • god bless alex!! =( so sad that alex die

  • sad that relly sad

  • That's sad :(

  • The "Go pick up the corn" bit made me laugh :)

  • good bless and god speed to heaven..:D

  • Don't worry guys, Griffin is his successor and he's doing as good as Alex.

  • .yeah. i watched einsteins video.. but alex is more better.. i hope all the parrots are like alex

  • "GO PICK UP THE CORN!"

atleast he knows hes the dominant gender xD

  • @EvgeniaZ

i take it your a girl? xD sorry, but i know some people out there think its funny xD

  • @bucklover01

    god damn

    i swear

  • rip alex .... go to the parrot's heaven

  • I choked up a bit after that story. rip alex

  • ByeBye Alex, you did a great job ;)

  • my dad will watch u have fun alex and dad i love u dad

  • Aw I cried when he died lol

  • so did i :.(

  • @ghettoarcade ryme nya

  • @ghettoarcade you cried and your LOLing.

  • @MrLaxdude89 correct

  • what's wrong with being a science experiment. I think it would be worse to be a pet. At least Alex had the benefit of scientists taking care of him. I hate to think of all the naive impulse buyers who own parrots and keep them caged all day rather than interact with them and stimulate their minds. Alex had a good life.

  • @gordopie11 I can't agree with you more. We have a blue and gold macaw and she spends more time out of her cage with us than she does in it. Actually, the only reason we even have a cage is for her to sleep in (safe from puppehs and kittehs lol) I volunteer at a bird rescue and it is unbelievable the number of birds that are dumped off there or simply abandoned because people didn't know what they were getting into. I swear sometimes I just want to look at these people and say "stupid humans"

  • @gordopie11 i agree with you completely but keep in mind that not all pet owners keep their parrots caged up all day i have an african grey parrot and we allow him to fly around the house freely

  • Sorry- "today" is 10-23-2009

  • Today on NPR talking about her book, Alex & Me, she said that Alex died of cardiac arrhythmia. And that the vet told her there would've been nothing she could have done had she been there when it happened. Rest in Peace Alex. :^(

  • this parrot is amazing.

  • he died of some disease apparently called crivicous, the bird picks it's feathers constantly... not because of sadness, but because of the disorder. It also suffers from a much softer beak which is the reason he can easily tell the difference between matters. He is still very smart and a gifted bird. RIP Alex :(

  • I raised African greys for years and never heard of such a thing. It could be I'm behind the times, but I Googled your term and the only hit was this page. The Alex Foundation page still says Alex died of unknown causes.

Your symptoms sound more like Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease, which Alex did not have.

  • What was her book called IM INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT ALEX.

  • @1928rocker me &alex

  • ALEX WAS WAY MORE THEN "Enstan". He was Alex.

  • I think she said Einstein.. that's another well-speaking parrot..!

  • Dear nosuchthing666 ,

everybody know that alex was very smart bird and everything smart not normal smart that amazing smart didn't live to long .. sorry for my english to bad =P

  • he only lived to 31. these things life spans go up to 60 years or so. he must have died of some kind of thing.

  • i'm so touched... ='( we will miss you alex.. you are the best bird in the world!

  • aww bless alex <3

  • :'( beautiful bird....

  • Isn't 31 a little young for a Grey to go? I heard that their average life span was around 50 - 70 years of age. Does anyone know if he had any health problems or the cause of his passing?

  • a sudden heart attack apparently.

  • "See you tomorrow. Be good. I love you."

  • Poor Bird. :(

  • i love u alex the best parrot there is

  • poor alex he was a cool parrot

  • i had a parrot that could talk but not that good

    AMAZING

  • goodbye alex. i hope u have fun in heaven :..(

  • Good bye Alex. We love you too. Fly in Parrot Heaven buddy

  • wow, that's a smart bird.

  • May Alex rest in peace

  • RIP :(

  • Kim was my neighbor and i would go over ever day and see alex and i loved hims so so mch!

  • "See you tomorrow. Be good. I love you." Man...chokes me up every time. There's so much more to our fellow animals on this planet, they deserve alot more respect than they generally get. Of course some, like my cat, get alot more respect than they give- but that's ok!

  • bye Alex,,,m,,m,,31 year old gone

  • bye alex

  • Goodbye! Enjoy in parrot heaven!

  • aw what a smart bird

  • I was always skeptical of Alex I having spent nearly 40 years w wild caught and handreated parrots. I had the pealusure of hearing about Alex personally from the woman who studied him. She never has claimed he is a genuis, rather an example of the possibility of greater intelligence in aves that we understand.

Alex was her pet & subject. She has worked with other parrots with similiat success.

He was greatly loved and well cared for.

We are sad to have lost him.

  • What a sad loss. He truly was an amazing bird.

  • byeeeeeeeeeeee alexxxxxxxxxxx i love parrot because i have parrot but its dead

  • his last words are so incredibly sad. "See you tomorrow. Be good. I love you."

  • by alex

  • SO sad . . . . . . WHAT AN AMAZING BIRD.

  • Wh00t! he counted the four squares quicker then me :P i was lookign for them

  • No he wasn't. She cared for him deeply and was only supposed to maintain the kind of relationship that a lab subject and a scientist would have. But she obviously cared for him alot. She wrote a book about her relationship with him.

  • The investigation determined that he died of either a heart attack or a stroke. Nice try though, thanks for playing!

  • [citation needed]

That's all speculation. No reason at all to believe that, just "he was unhappy!!!111" No he wasn't. You're anthropomorphizing the bird. They don't want the same things we want. In addition, a bird is actually likely to live longer in captivity because of the better medical care and better quality of food available.

  • But it doesn't work like that. You're making a claim (Alex's captivity led to his death.) YOU are the one who needs to provide evidence for that claim. You can't just say "well, prove it's not true!" That's not how it works. Again, there is no reason to believe his captivity led to his death. Provide evidence. You can't, because all you're doing is speculating.

I am not speculating, I am simply pointing out your lack of evidence.

  • You were heavily implying that the cause of his death was his captivity. The use of words like perhaps and maybe don't change that. You then failed to back that up. You also said "His whole life was just not supposed to be like that, so no wonder his lifespan was not like most of his fellow parrots" which is pretty much a definite claim. You stated that as a fact when it isn't.

  • hahaha "GO pick up Corn."

  • Man this bird was awesome. I loved watching him every time he was on TV. An incredible example of language, mathematics and reasoning in other lifeforms.

... Now, about the news cast...

Parrot heaven? Are they freaking serious?

So I guess ABC News figured its audience was made up exclusively of four year olds.

  • I can't decide if I like the trainer of alex or not, he doesn't seem too happy, but I didn't know him so I can't judge

  • Omg. that's sooo sad :(

  • im crying.WHAAAAAAAAAAAA

  • Dr. Pepperberg has written a book "Alex and Me" I highly recommend it to all interested in Alex and his training.

    Wonderful!

  • very good book, i just finished it.

i too recommend it - the prior studies of linguistics with other animals are just as fascinating, and she covers a broad spectrum.

    rip alex

  • poor parrot such a smart bird i hope it lived a happy life

  • Sad.

It's one of THE NOT regular thing. Sad he died. =[

  • so just because worse things happen, people can't be moved by the death of "just" a parrot?

  • you heartless bastard darking64.iv a parrot myself which all the family is close to very much when you have had a pet they becum a part of the family

  • You must admit that Alex was quite the wonder of the animal world, but I just can't lose hope that somewhere out there, more animals like him are waiting for us to show mankind that not all animals are dumb.

  • Actually Alex had a partner parrot named Griffin who is showing the same levels of intelligence that Alex had.

  • Griffin apparently is much shyer than Alex was. In one instance they were both together and Dr. Pepperberg was asking Griffin a question that was answered poorly and Alex admonished Griffin: "Say better" .

  • yeah worse thing have happened:

    u were born underseautopia!

  • fuck you idiot, that parrot was smarter than you!

  • That goes for you too.

  • Do you have pets?

  • Its a parrot.

    a

    fucking

    parrot.

    Jesus christ, people.

  • @underseautopia i wouldn't say it that hard because it is really fascinating what pepperberg worked out with him!!!

b u t i am truly amazed by those people who probably wouldn't care if their neighbour died but then are soooo sad about a both sweet and interesting animal. that's somehow inappropriate...

  • Most of my neighbors are not as scientifically important or representing a larger meaning unlike this bird who decimated many of the limiting concepts of bird and animal cognition and learning-which in the end leads us to learn more accurately about ourselves as humans. Pepperberg also began this back when behaviorism still had such a fundamentalist grip (much more politics than science), making the subject, let alone positing the abilities Alex would one day present, a career destroying taboo.

  • To offer either reacting on behalf of neighbors or a bird (assuming emotional reactions of folks you likely know little of and assuredly react to far more than just this in their lives), is a false choice.

  • awe the ending is soooo sad i defininately teared up!!!! rip little guy!!!!

  • i love you forever and always alex :'( i miss you i love you i loooove you! i will always misss youuuu

  • No alex:'(

  • Alex was amazing and had people baffled. He was a truly gifted parrot and I hope this will change people's minds about bird intelligence. I remember Alex's last words to Irene...I was really upset by his loss..Fly free Alex <3 R.I.P

  • I have 2 blue balls.

  • we all love you alex. ive never heard of you, but when i watched this 2 minute video i loved you.

  • So long, Alex.

  • aw that is so sad

  • omg. thats so sad. it made me cry. :( i love you alex

  • we love u alex

  • He is a very smart bird. R.I.P Alex

    Sorry Irene.

The bird wanted to do its own thing but u woulndt let him do what he wanted...............

    get real!

  • Who made him smart? What would he do that is more fun? (of course he should live in the wild, but except that) what would you provide this bird when u refer to "do its own thing"?
