There is a similar story from WW2 where a jewish mother hiding from the Nazis smothered her baby so it didn't give away their hiding place. There is a scene in 'The Painist' about it - the Jews were discovered though and the mother screams 'why did I do it ?' over and over
My opinion was that the most moving part was with Col Potter toasting his late buddies in one epidode (I also felt moved by his reaction when Radar gave Sophie to him as a present) But the two parts where I will always cry no matter what is when Radar told everyone about Henry's death and when we see on Goodbye, Fairwell and Amen, BJ's message to Hawkeye when he leaves the camp of M*A*S*H 4077. However the funniest part I cannot say because there are too many!!
oh gosh. The finale of MASH was amazing. The writers were so awesome, as well as the actors who just made the show. One of the saddest parts of this episode was Charles with the musicians. I think the very last scene of the finale just killed me with its brilliance.
the most moving episode in MASH was when Col. Potter found out he was the last of his buddies and everyone drank his bottle of whiskey or whatever it was
Alan Alda was perfect as Hawkeye. His tremendous acting abilities brought such dimension to the character. I loved how he could go from hilarious to serious and back, without it seeming uneven. This scene from the series, was certainly one of the saddest. M.A.S.H. was one of the best shows ever, and will always hold great memories for me. Thanks for posting this.

One of my most vivid "TV Memories" ever was watching this episode as a kid. I understood why the woman killed the child..to not be found out and thereby saving everyone on the bus. What just made me cry a river watching it now is that I am a mom and fully understand all that moment in time and one action meant, did mean and would forever mean to those on that bus but most of all to that mother. Powerful. They don't make TV like this anymore folks. That saddens me also.

@TheMashwatcher585 I will respectfully disagree, the saddest moment was Episode #17 Sometimes You Never the Bullet. This is where Hawkeye best friend, Tommy Gillis, a writer is KIA.
@TheMashwatcher585 For me, the saddest moment was when Maj. Winchester found out that the Chinese soldier musicans he conducted died. Then he said classical music, once a refuge from the war around him, has turned into a neverending reminder of the war.
@TheMashwatcher585 Absolutely. The notification of Col. Blake's death, coupled with the final episode where everyone said goodbye was gut wrenching. My dad (who served in the Navy 50-53 in Korea) took me, and mom to see MASH at the drive-in. We also watched every episode from start to finish of the series.
@TheMashwatcher585 Agreed... Col Blake was one of the core central characters... this scene clip is when MASH was trying way too hard to win Emmy's and this overacting by Alda is typical.
@TheMashwatcher585 For me it was episode #17 Sometimes You Never hear the Bullet. They bring Hawkeye's friend Tommy Gillis into the operating room and he dies on Hawkeye.
@12Daniel7 I totally agree with you, but just a correction the episode was called "sometimes you hear the bullet" which hawkeye suggests while he is operating on Tommy before he passes instead of tommy's title "you never hear the bullet" and i think the line that made my heart sink was when henry says "Pierce, go help Mcintyre" which basically meant "give up Hawk there's nothing you can do".
Korean War lasted three years. The show M*A*S*H went eleven seasons. The actors started showing their age before it was over with. I'd say they milked it for all it was worth.
The first step towards solving your own problem is correctly recognizing that you have one.
Hawkeye was denying his problem by suppressing his memory by consciously changing its story compared to what he really remembered. But, subconsciously, he was expressing the real memory when he kept mentioning a bus (parapraxis).
Once Hawkeye was consciously able to confront his real memory, he passed a HUGE hurdle towards dealing with it, which is why Dr. Freedman said they're "halfway home."
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Hawkeye's substitution of the baby for a chicken may have been a form of sublimation. It's a mental defense mechanism as the substitution was a way for him not to consciously deal with the horror of the memory and the guilt.
But, the problem is Hawkeye's denial of the event, thus his inability to responsibly deal with it (doesn't necessarily mean assuming fault), has caused that experience to lash out in other ways within him, resulting in his insanity.
@Watcher3223 This wasn't the only time Hawkeye experienced this type of mental breakdown. In another episode he started sneezing constantly and developed rashes on his body. They couldn't figure out what caused the allergy. Then Dr. Freedman arrived and Hawkeye told him about an incident that happened when he was a boy. His cousin, who Hawkeye idolized, pushed him off a rowboat while fishing. When Hawk finally remembered that moment, he was sobbing away. That was a more powerful moment IMO
Never said it was his only time, but yeah I do remember that scene, too.
The trigger of that episode where Hawkeye develop "allergic reactions" was one of the wounded smelling like a "wet burlap sack." That was the same kind of smell he sensed when he was pulled out of the water as a child.
Dr. Freedman indicates that certain sensations, such as smell, can provoke quite a powerful recall and that childhood memories are among some of the most painful to recollect.
are you can do a search for tape trading and find the show with network commercials
i have this on tape somewhere with ET talking about the end of the show and talking about maybe having a spin off at that time they was just talking about the spin off and nothen was set yet
This was, at a young age, very difficult to cope with. the Idea that someone pays the price in some way for freedom. In this case the Korean woman losing her baby and also Hawkeye's sanity...
my God that clip is hard to watch.....and I've never seen the entire episode before..the expression of anguish on both Hawkeye's & the mother's faces but more importantly in their eyes is just horrible to watch..and Hawkeye's realisation that it was a baby & not a chicken & the irreversabiltiy of what had happened makes that scene doubly hard to watch without being reduced to tears..Great acting..wonderful series..
indeed I will do just that!,and thank you for your reply too..I've just paused the play back on the clip while I write this,'cause I know I'll start choking up..again!
@DataTasha4Ever yea, and hes also tryin to say goodbye to hawkeye because hes got his travel orders and is goin home, but hawkeye doesnt know, and BJ ends up not being able to tell him...
Hawkeye, who is always joking, laughing or flirting, looses his joyful spirit along with his mind. The sad expression on Alda's face through this episode is one of the saddest things I've ever seen.
@goback3spaces I luv this show I just finished watching every single episode and u know wat even if at sometimes it's dramatic and at sometimes it's humorous it is still the #1 show of all time and if u had even a lick of taste u would no that this is history but u r 2 blind and tasteless u wretched dimwit
@jtp1234512345 Let me jump in here a moment. I don't mind if you disagree with each other but theres no need for name calling. The man expressed his opinion. Not a popular one from the other comments, but it is his opinion and he's welcomed to express it. I don't lke MASH. Just this episode. But I respect the people who do like it. So please keep the comments civil and discuss. Don't bring the comment section down like other videos. Thanks.
Try dullest TV moment. Or most nauseatingly tedious self-congratulatory drawn out attenuated TV moment. I saw this episode when it aired, having quit watching MASH several years before. By the time they finally pulled the curtain and called it quits, they'd all become just as infuriatingly sanctimonious as Frank Burns, who had the sense to get out long before. Sure, Alda still is a good actor, but they'd run out of things to say about '76 or '77.
@goback3spaces To each his own. Like I said, I'm still not a fan of MASH. I got the first season and this episode on DVD. Can only watch it without the laugh track because I don't find the show funny with it. When I turn it off, Radar is the funniest person. The rest of them just complain. And I think the reason why this stood out for me was because it was the first ep I've seen without the laugh track and seeing it without commercials really made it feel like a movie. Thanx for commenting
@bigdaddyrico85 Yeah, sure. The first couple of seasons are by far the best. As for the laugh track, I just take it for granted. Sounds more like a toilet flushing than human laughter...
@goback3spaces Like the other guy said, to each his own, but if you think this is the dullest TV moment or even a very dull TV moment then I don't see how anything could please you.
@finalconflictpro Aw, come on! Tons of stuff pleases me! I was with MASH from start to almost-finish, and I watched the show deteriorate over the years. The early episodes are mostly terrific but the post-Radar shows I find unwatchable. With this show, it's simply a case of going to the well too many times.
@goback3spaces Oh no, I agree, they definitely went much too far with it, no argument there. I was just commenting on the fact that you said that this was an incredibly dull moment.
@goback3spaces Maybe you're right to an extent, but it made you as a viewer remember that it was still a war. Even if the person being killed is 30, they're still someones baby
@loner1878 I'm not pretending. I think it's misconceived. Let me put it this way: comedy is harder than drama and I think they were all so exhausted at that point that they decided to jettison the comedy altogether and turn it into a blatant and rather portentous anti-war statement. Every time there's a deep encounter between Hawkeye and the shrink, that's your cue to change channels to the nearest baseball game.
How can you not love Alan Alda? He's such an outstanding actor. This scene and the the scene where he gives the eulogy for a nurse that stepped on a land mine (different ep) are his best two scenes in the whole series.
thank you very much bigdaddyrico85, i wasn't sure if that was an expression of how it made the uploader feel or a title. Found it and own the cd now, again thanks for replying,2.5 hours of WoW acting, unlike most shows today.
@canadiankewldude It's the final episode of Season 11. It's episode 16. Called Goodbye Farewell and Amen. Fox usually sells it as a standalone dvd with just this episode. You can use the link in the description.
alan alda you are an amazing actor...that scene got me back in the day...and got me again. damn amazing show mash was..they just dont put out anything good these days and it makes me frustrated.
for sure this was really sad, but i get much more emotional when Charles sees the dying Chinese musician and tries to listen to the record, only to be reminded of the pain again.
@autriii Another great scene. And that part gets me as well. This part stands out for me though. And I think the reason why is because I never liked MASH. It was my dad's show. Always had to watch it. Back in 98, I was at a crappy video store and had already rented everything I thought was good. So, I rented this. Watched this scene and it "had me". I really loved it. Tracked down a Beta copy and bought it.
@bigdaddyrico85 Hey. I'm 31. I remember when I was a kid in the late 1980s and early to mid 1990s I hated M*A*S*H. I found it very boring and unfunny. But when I entered my late 20s, I started watching it again and I must say I absolutely loved it. I think that with this show, you have to have experienced life, and have grown emotionally and mentally to "get" it.
@MIKESOWELL I get what you're saying and I agree with you. I always felt that you have to re-experience things in your own time and way. I'm slowly watching MASH. I catch the reruns here and there. And I might pick up season 2 and give it a try. Baby steps. I hated the monkees growing up. Now I have all thier albums, seaon 1 and the movie. So anything is possible. lol Thanx for your comment.
@autriii As much as we dislike the pompous, arrogant ways of Charles, we feel for him! The war took something away from his also. The man can't even listen to music without being reminded of what was taken away! I relate that to the fact I can't get festive at Thanksgiving in November since my best friend was cruelly taken away from me by a family relative no less! Now when I hear people say Thanksgiving, I remind them to be thankful EVERY day and not just the fourth Thursday in November.
@zenmaster24 Ill be honest. I really only like MASH without the laugh track. I think that's why this was always my favorite ep. And I've seen this part ALOT and it still makes me cry. Great writing, acting and directing.
@chocolatetones Because Hawkeye went insane. This event was the icing on the cake. The lady killed her baby. But that was too tramatic for Hawkeye so he imagines her with a chicken instead. In his mind, Hawkeye replaced the baby with the chicken. Until he was forced to confront what really happened here.
I was thinking there was no way I'd find this sad... Comedy is definitely the wrong category for this one.

Ah, I caught another clue.
Note what Hawkeye says when Dr. Freedman asks what he and BJ were talking about.
"Fingers, smiles, teeth, booties."
Those upset Hawkeye because BJ talks about those things in reference to his child.
The words, and in effect BJ, may be symbolic of a baby, which reminds Hawkeye of his traumatic memory.
Watcher3223 4 months ago

ACoKyo 5 months ago
Oh, wow. Alan Alda is such an amazing actor. This is THE best TV finale ever.
Avery1125 5 months ago 3
This was, at a young age, very difficult to cope with. the Idea that someone pays the price in some way for freedom. In this case the Korean woman losing her baby and also Hawkeye's sanity...
AlistairAI 5 months ago
my God that clip is hard to watch.....and I've never seen the entire episode before..the expression of anguish on both Hawkeye's & the mother's faces but more importantly in their eyes is just horrible to watch..and Hawkeye's realisation that it was a baby & not a chicken & the irreversabiltiy of what had happened makes that scene doubly hard to watch without being reduced to tears..Great acting..wonderful series..
MrTevB 5 months ago 8
@MrTevB I say you have to check it out. Find it. buy it. Whatever. This scene is the climax. The build up is just as rewarding.
bigdaddyrico85 2 months ago 5
@bigdaddyrico85
indeed I will do just that!,and thank you for your reply too..I've just paused the play back on the clip while I write this,'cause I know I'll start choking up..again!

i actually saw that episode on tv when i was young, stuck with me a long time...

I feel horrible for Hawkeye, but I feel bad for BJ too. He's obviously worried sick and Hawkeye's dismissing everything in his own way.
DataTasha4Ever 6 months ago 22
@DataTasha4Ever yea, and hes also tryin to say goodbye to hawkeye because hes got his travel orders and is goin home, but hawkeye doesnt know, and BJ ends up not being able to tell him...

i`m wondering why the chicken looks like my chicken?!
Hmmm....strange....
norwayguy121 6 months ago
Hawkeye, who is always joking, laughing or flirting, looses his joyful spirit along with his mind. The sad expression on Alda's face through this episode is one of the saddest things I've ever seen.

Ye, its a story from WWII when a japanese woman killed her baby to be quiet while hiding in a cave from americans.

@naglphar M*A*S*H* took place during Korea. Unless you mean that the story they tell in the movie comes from a story that took place in WW2.

Thanks.
bigdaddyrico85 7 months ago
Try dullest TV moment. Or most nauseatingly tedious self-congratulatory drawn out attenuated TV moment. I saw this episode when it aired, having quit watching MASH several years before. By the time they finally pulled the curtain and called it quits, they'd all become just as infuriatingly sanctimonious as Frank Burns, who had the sense to get out long before. Sure, Alda still is a good actor, but they'd run out of things to say about '76 or '77.
goback3spaces 8 months ago
@goback3spaces To each his own. Like I said, I'm still not a fan of MASH. I got the first season and this episode on DVD. Can only watch it without the laugh track because I don't find the show funny with it. When I turn it off, Radar is the funniest person. The rest of them just complain. And I think the reason why this stood out for me was because it was the first ep I've seen without the laugh track and seeing it without commercials really made it feel like a movie. Thanx for commenting
bigdaddyrico85 8 months ago
@bigdaddyrico85 Yeah, sure. The first couple of seasons are by far the best. As for the laugh track, I just take it for granted. Sounds more like a toilet flushing than human laughter...
goback3spaces 8 months ago
@goback3spaces Like the other guy said, to each his own, but if you think this is the dullest TV moment or even a very dull TV moment then I don't see how anything could please you.
finalconflictpro 8 months ago 2
@finalconflictpro Aw, come on! Tons of stuff pleases me! I was with MASH from start to almost-finish, and I watched the show deteriorate over the years. The early episodes are mostly terrific but the post-Radar shows I find unwatchable. With this show, it's simply a case of going to the well too many times.
goback3spaces 8 months ago
@goback3spaces Oh no, I agree, they definitely went much too far with it, no argument there. I was just commenting on the fact that you said that this was an incredibly dull moment.
finalconflictpro 8 months ago
@finalconflictpro Well, it is. Dull. Irritating. Redundant. Strained. Forced. Uninteresting. Boring.
goback3spaces 8 months ago
@goback3spaces Maybe you're right to an extent, but it made you as a viewer remember that it was still a war. Even if the person being killed is 30, they're still someones baby
thyamelate 7 months ago
@goback3spaces
I'm not a fan of the show (it was on before I was born) but you can't pretend this isn't an intense tv moment.
loner1878 7 months ago
@loner1878 I'm not pretending. I think it's misconceived. Let me put it this way: comedy is harder than drama and I think they were all so exhausted at that point that they decided to jettison the comedy altogether and turn it into a blatant and rather portentous anti-war statement. Every time there's a deep encounter between Hawkeye and the shrink, that's your cue to change channels to the nearest baseball game.
goback3spaces 7 months ago
@goback3spaces
Whatever.

@goback3spaces Well, why don't you crawl back to 1976 then.

Found it and own the cd now, again thanks for replying,2.5 hours of WoW acting, unlike most shows today.

thank you for posting this
canadiankewldude 9 months ago
@canadiankewldude It's the final episode of Season 11. It's episode 16. Called Goodbye Farewell and Amen. Fox usually sells it as a standalone dvd with just this episode. You can use the link in the description.

alan alda you are an amazing actor...that scene got me back in the day...and got me again. damn amazing show mash was..they just dont put out anything good these days and it makes me frustrated.
firebird403 9 months ago
for sure this was really sad, but i get much more emotional when Charles sees the dying Chinese musician and tries to listen to the record, only to be reminded of the pain again.
autriii 9 months ago
@autriii Another great scene. And that part gets me as well. This part stands out for me though. And I think the reason why is because I never liked MASH. It was my dad's show. Always had to watch it. Back in 98, I was at a crappy video store and had already rented everything I thought was good. So, I rented this. Watched this scene and it "had me". I really loved it. Tracked down a Beta copy and bought it.
bigdaddyrico85 9 months ago
@bigdaddyrico85 Hey. I'm 31. I remember when I was a kid in the late 1980s and early to mid 1990s I hated M*A*S*H. I found it very boring and unfunny. But when I entered my late 20s, I started watching it again and I must say I absolutely loved it. I think that with this show, you have to have experienced life, and have grown emotionally and mentally to "get" it.
MIKESOWELL 8 months ago
@MIKESOWELL I get what you're saying and I agree with you. I always felt that you have to re-experience things in your own time and way. I'm slowly watching MASH. I catch the reruns here and there. And I might pick up season 2 and give it a try. Baby steps. I hated the monkees growing up. Now I have all thier albums, seaon 1 and the movie. So anything is possible. lol Thanx for your comment.

horaciosi 8 months ago
@horaciosi Not up here but other people do. Just search. It might be to the right
bigdaddyrico85 8 months ago
@autriii As much as we dislike the pompous, arrogant ways of Charles, we feel for him! The war took something away from his also. The man can't even listen to music without being reminded of what was taken away! I relate that to the fact I can't get festive at Thanksgiving in November since my best friend was cruelly taken away from me by a family relative no less! Now when I hear people say Thanksgiving, I remind them to be thankful EVERY day and not just the fourth Thursday in November.

I dont get it. Why did the chicken got quiet when she killed her baby? And how did the baby suddenly got in her ars instead of the chicken?
chocolatetones 1 year ago
@chocolatetones Because Hawkeye went insane. This event was the icing on the cake. The lady killed her baby. But that was too tramatic for Hawkeye so he imagines her with a chicken instead. In his mind, Hawkeye replaced the baby with the chicken. Until he was forced to confront what really happened here.
