Frank got some heat for not going for the high note at the end. But it's the last note that's the essence of Sinatra. Listen to how clearly pronounced the "s" is at the end. Instead of letting the last note trail off into the sunset, he ended with flourish. Frank was such a master of the breath that he could concentrate on the emotion of songs instead of worrying about where the air was coming from. So many have learned from him, so many more NEED to learn from him.
My husband is dying of Lou Gehrig disease, this song is everything he is, his battle, his strength, love this song, powerful, true, for all people who battle and face death and still reach for the stars !!
Definitely my favorite version, besides the choir version. But it would be even more beautiful if he'd sing the version that says: "To be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause." Cause that is defintely the most meaningfull part of the whole song.
not as good as elvises version but you can expect that franf talks a lot in his songs does not sing like the king i think he was always a little jealous of him being no1 i do like some of sinatras songs
Frank Sinatra the most talented singer of our day try to hold a note like he do he sang like a musian plays and we can only thank Tommy Dorsey for his phrasing with his songs. He was the best there was and the best there ever will be
at about 1:16 it breaks off from the real lyrics and substitutes new ones so (i assume this is the reason) frank didn't have to say the word "Hell". although im sure he would have if the word was still in the music.
One forgets that Sinatra could not only SING but had PIPES. This is one of his most awesome performances. The vocal artistry is amazing. I have no idea what VienneseDelights means! How can someone pacing the song like this be singing it for the first time? Every syllable is enunciated; every change of vocal timbre is carefully calculated.
Usually Sinatra sings everything the way you feel it should be. But this is weak. This sounds like his tried the song for the very first time. And if you compare this to Elvis´ version of the song you exactly know HOW weak Sinatra´s performance is.
@VienneseDelights I don't know how intentional it may be, but I quite like the fact he seems to strugle while singing the chorus. Somehow makes it seem more of an effort, more powerful. I do believe that Andy Williams does the best version. You know this is a truly awesome song when they had an hour long Radio 4 feature dedicated to this very song.
forget the beetles, sinatra, dean martin, and sammy davis jr. were really the ones bigger than jesus. that being said, i perfer jim nabors' version over this one, but it is a VERY close second.
ThankYou for FrankSinatra's rendition of 'Impossible Dream'; -while JackJones also belted it, both versions fall-short compared to Matt'Monro's stirring performance in one regard; had FS & JJ begun perhaps half-octave lower, they could have thus made that more glorious full-octave higher reach for that unreachable 'star' last-note, to knock it out of the ballpark! Same flaw in both FS's & JJ's great deliveries, -musical-dir. did not force them to 'reach' in keeping with the theme as did MM...!!!
@coolspindrift --very pretty, i still like JJ's & MM's renditions better than FS's, but wait there's still more, --for here is JJ's dad AllanJones belting "Impossible Dream" as he did on stage playing the part of the 'Man' and goes for the Star which JJ fell short of---> [ Allan Jones on the Jack Jones Show ] (highlight and paste in Utubes's above website search-box). The entire video is an absolute delight, --now we know where Jack got his great sense of humor and showbiz-timing...!!!
It is quite nice, but, I have to say I prefer a more broadway/operatic sound. Even so, it's a great song performed by a great singer.

This song really gives me a western vibe. It reminds me of Ennio Morricone's music for The Man with No Name trilogy.
