this is one of my favorite live music clips of all time. 4:22 when Adrian Belew looks back over his shoulder and smiles at the band as if he's saying "how badass are we right now?"
@geoffreaux Funny, I was just going to listen to this for inspiration for a composition I just thought of today - the piece will be written in the style of Steve Reich's phase pieces yet it'll be using riffs from this song.
I love Bruford's setup! From what I can tell: 4 or 5 Octobans, acoustic bass drum, acoustic snare drum, approx. 6 Simmons pads, 1 or 2 Roto-toms, a bass drum tilted on its side, and fairly minimal Paiste cymbals and metals. It's so different from the average 5 pc. set. He needed the Simmons pads, the roto-tom, and the Octobans because he was coming up with different sounds. For example, during this song he "rides" one of the Octobans. Sometimes he rides the roto-tom. So creative!
@drewper73 I seem to remember reading somewhere that this setup came about partially as the result of a challenge from Robert Fripp in which he asked "why do you need a hi-hat?" and Bruford couldn't come up with a satisfactory answer.
@kovensmith I don't doubt that. Although I'm pretty sure Bruford did have a hi-hat throught the years. Bruford just found different things to "ride" on instead of the hi-hats or the ride cymbal. Very innovative. Ground-breaking. Every now and then I might "ride" my floor tom or the rim of a drum, but to "ride" a roto-tom or an Octoban, that's just downright unconventional and I love it! There are no rules!
Not an easy song to pull off live. I just ordered "The Noise - Live in Frejus" and "Three of a Perfect Pair" in Japan all on one dvd. I can't wait until it gets here. My older brother played "Discipline" for me in the mid 80's & I remember how different everything sounded compared to other music I'd heard up to that point at 12 years old. I was already a Yes fan, a Bruford fan, so it was an easy step to the 80's lineup of KC. I wish I could've seen them on the THRAK tour. Thanx 4 posting!
3 of my favorite musicians collaborating...I used to listen to these guys all the time when I was younger...maybe it's time to start listening again!
