You are not going to build a space elevator from the Earth to the Moon. As you point out, the relative motions of the Earth & Moon render this impossible. However, you can build a space elevator up from the Lunar surface, past the L1 Lagrange point, and into cis-lunar space. This is the only space elevator that can be built near term (this decade) using existing technology, and it will become an essential part of the space infrastructure, enabling easy access to and from the Lunar surface.

@DMFermiPhysics This is a theoretical concept, meaning that numbers show that it can be done. Carbon nanotubes are tough; they're not going to break easily. Anchoring shouldn't be a problem. It's just a matter of anchoring deep enough. With that, keeping it into orbit shouldn't be a problem.
@Nathan173AB The problem is that the ISS is only at an altitude of about 460 km at MAXIMUM and it makes 15.7 orbits PER DAY. How dow you anchor THAT to a single location from which to run an elevator. The answer is you cannot and have to place the tether at a position 35,000+ km away.

@matthewakian2 its not possible to keep the space station in earth's atmosphere because the gravity is much greater inside the atmosphere...but after first 100 miles the gravity becomes low so any satellite or space station can float.

Problem with all these Ideas are that we are moving to slowly. The amount of knowledge that needs to be accumulated in human, to make new discoveries are ever increasing. The focus on educational methods to speed up learning process is a necessity to make our civilization to go from a type 0 to type 1. Furthermore the humans must be re-leaved of monotonous works and work tasks. It is very possible to make this happen today, but science community isn't cooperating enough with the industry.

If you were on that space elevator, and some little Brat got on and pressed all the buttons so you'd stop at EVERY floor all the way up to space....it'd be REALLY annoying.

if only governments could understand that investing in space development is something that will not only bring back great profit (asteroids have more minerals than humans have mined on earth) but also will ensure our long term survival by spreading out into space, as a species it is our duty to preserve life even after the death of our planet, so why are we detained by money?

this could certainly revolutionize space travel but I think those prohibitive costs will be long ago dealt with before the space elevator is seriously considered.
Within the next 15-20 years, private space companies (of particular interest are SpaceX and Orbital Sciences) will dramatically reduce the costs of space travel (and ultimately exploration) through competition, vertical integration, engineering innovation and a booming new space industry.

Alas, classical mechanics does not give mankind interstellar transport. Need to experiment with magnitoelectrodinamics or quantum states. For example, the cosmic engine, which controls the probability of finding a spacecraft in a particular point of the universe.

I think lots of people will.
If that merely becoming reality makes you weep, wait till you get on the thing! If this ever gets built it will be one of the greatest devices ever constructed, if not the greatest. What device could be more spectacular than a device that allows humans to get off of the planet safely and routinely? We could reach other planets so much more easily. Space colonization's first step and only real obstacle is affordable access to space.

Watch the documentary MOON RISING... NASA has already photographed existing space elevators, different space crafts and large base complex on the moon. We are already there and beyond. They are just tuning your brain into whats real so your brain wont overloaded and fried when you see the real thing.
