dont know which muay thai school u graduated under but the "up elbow" you're talking about is called "Tat Mala" :D i am thai and training muay thai in Los Angeles loves your video ;D
Donnie's is the best channel for street applicable thai style combatives techniques. Usually when i view a channel i might find a few ideas or techniques i like, not so with whotookdonnierules, i have pretty much kidnapped every aspect of every vid on this channel and implemented it into my training, not to mention annoying all my mates by plugging it mercilessly. I know where my first stop will be when i go to the US. Good work Donnie, really appreciate the vids and please, GIMME MORE!!!
@ToraJutsu01@ToraJutsu01 Sir, thank you very much for the kind words. I'm working on new stuff. if you like my channel, check out my blog - oldstylemuaythai dotcom ... Myself and a fellow instructor contribute to it, and based on what you put about yourself in your profile, I think it could be a good resource for you. Another great resource is stickgrappler.tripod dotcom - old data, but still significant.
@whotookdonnierules Your more than welcome! currently in the process of reading everything on yours and Mr Sambrano's blog, plus all the blogs you recommend! Im also going to start cutting up my swiss ball as soon as i find it :) that was a really great post on the blog, i have seen those before but wondered what they were for. Keep it up Donnie!!!!
@marintoss I like my URL, it's just that every time I say it in my videos it reminds me of those douchy tough guy muay thai/bjj/mma instructor guys doing self promotion. Funny thing is, I'm a marketer by trade. You think I wouldn't be so self conscious about it.
@cwj415 Why punch when you can leap into an elbow? Personally I have found that punches are a waste of energy. Fists are weak weapons and can easily get injured, and very few punches are knockouts. An elbow is much better always.
I use punches to lead in while sparring, but that's about it.
@landgabriel yea ok, go try "leaping" into an elbow at punching distance. i guess you should just completely ignore punching in a fight according to your logic
@cwj415 I do it in sparring. I have found that punching just takes too much energy for the small payoff it could have. I would rather use that energy closing the gap and clinching, kneeing, and elbowing.
I realy enjoy your videos. The old style Muai Tai is something I would realy like to try. It would be very difficult to find instructors in my area though.
another great vid man...where do you train, I'm in Oakland. I have tried that up elbow for a while now. I feel good range and all but it's like you saud, nothin really behind it. Seems funny how I didnt just think " step into it"...Godd stuff man, thnx
The school is in Santa Clara. Here's the address: 1500 Norman Ave Santa Clara, CA - We have an open door policy - feel free to drop in when you're in the Bay Area!

elbows are for close distances not an arm's length distance when you can actually punch

Up elbow can used two condition. first are used for attack like your vid and second you can used up elbow for counter attack of the punches .

Very true. In fact, we train 'our' up elbow more often as an aggressive defense technique than a stand alone strike.
