I love this guy, if only his style of farming was the norm... we'd be a much healthier society. It'd probably be cheaper too but then of course corporations like Monsanto wouldn't be making billions monopolizing the industry.
@7891midnight There is good reason why Farmer Joel doesn't do exactly that. There is a great explanation of it in "The Omnivore's Dilemma", a book a journalist put together and a large section is about him spending a week on Joel's farm. check it out!
@piucaprim and anybody else willing to help. I am 16 and am very interested in this kind of Agriculture as a career, but have a few questions. How much does it earn(not in it for money but curious)? What is the work like? Is it a good career/life in general? I know nothing so how do I get started (kindof a city kid but willing to learn)?
.but unfortunately..big agro from the states wants to 'tap' emerging markets like us..and force the local farmers (most of whom) who do not even know such intensive farms exist..to adapt to 'modern' (read cruel) farming techniques..with barren concrete floors and the likes for the poor animals..i hope joel and the likes of him also try exporting their methods so that we dont have to make the mistakes that the western world had made with intensive factory farms
i hope joel good luck. Im originally from India and since we are officially a 'second world' counrty, most of our animal farms are...well..not factory farms like I saw in europe and the as I see in the US....
I just read about the Polyface Farm in Omnivore's Dilemma. Big corporations have way too much invested and will try to suffocate the great guys like Joel but, more cancer and more growth hormone linked to the food..duh!! , more people will support Joel. Farms like his need more exposure so other farmers get the bust of confidence and courage to mimic.. bless you Joel. Awesome work. Remarkable!!
@Hamish121212@Hamish121212 Yeh, I got that, too. GMO grain is NOT something I want to feed my pigs or my chickens. Can you say NOT ORGANIC and NOT SUSTAINABLE? And, uh...didn't the feral pig problem start with people turning their pigs loose in the forest? It does sound, though, like he controls their movement to prevent possible escape.
People should boycott the other big industry farms like Tyson and Perdue that use chemicals and unnatural ways of raising animals and start buying from farms like these. But it'll never happen :/
@sphinxart - Do what you can where you are - in your backyard (if chickens are not allowed or practical, raise rabbits, just don't tell anyone you eat them). Raise a few vegatables. And buy real food from real farmers as much as you can. Mr. Salatin needs customers and so do his counterparts accross the country.
@Jefferdaughter Thanks - I'm in an urban area in South Africa so livestock isn't allowed. I wouldn't eat rabbits ;-) I've got a small vegetable garden and then started a website - veggietrade.co.za to try convince neighbors to trade veggies (due to limited space). Busy compiling a list of farmers who supply totally organic foods, so I'll be supporting Mr.Salatin from afar ;-)
Interesting...people see a farm like this and they're blown away like this is a new concept. Don't get me wrong, Joel Salatin is great, but my father and grandfather and great grandfather farmed like this years ago...raising hogs, beef and dairy cattle, sheep, and chickens outdoors with plenty of sunshine, pasture and fresh air...almost ALL farmers did up until probably the 1960's when industrialized agriculture and factory farms and confinements took over.
@pppppee What does permaculture have to do with anything? It's about doing what's right. The point I was making is that most farmers years ago, my family included, followed ethical standards of animal husbandry and did not raise livestock in confinement as most farms do today. Many farms, ours included, were organic and didn't even realize it. There was no such thing as organic farming back then. The only fertilizer used was manure and feed contained no chemicals, hormones or antibiotics.
Look at all those happy animals! Look at all that healthy food! This is so comforting to watch.
Converting all of our farms to organically grown food will remove a majority of the health problems in America. That will reduce healthcare expenses and help the economy, as well as protecting and preserving farmlands. It's a win-win-win situation.
Farming is hard work; to have to add fights with Monster Monsanto -- wow. That's a challenge.
Thank you, Joel Salatin, for helping to save America.

Part 3: "were well below those which people normally use and we said to ourselves, 'gosh we really have to let the public know about the dangers as quickly as we can.' And, I thought the best way to do that was to talk to the administration, but there I was shocked, I was very, very shocked because I was told, ordered rather, not to communicate our findings due to the GMO question lurking in the background." - Robert Belle, PhD, The French National Center for Scientific Research
@hplaserjet2001 I think it might have been better if you just supplied the source for this material. I've been trying to read along, but I find it confusing. All the best.
Part 2: "... from a genetic point of view. This is the first malfunction that we observed with RoundUp, it is for that reason that we considered that RoundUp provokes the first stages that lead to cancer. We are careful not to say it provokes cancer because we won't see the cancers develop for 30 or 40 years. It was immediately clear how important these findings were for product users, especially since the tested doses..." - Robert Belle, PhD, The French National Center for Scientific Research
Part 1: "The big surprise was that (Monsanto) RoundUp has an effect on cell division. We saw very quickly RoundUp affected a key process in cell division, not the cell division mechanisms themselves, but those which control cell division. You have to understand how cells become cancerous, in the beginning all cells are benign and then at a certain point modifications take place in the cells that make them unstable..." - Robert Belle, PhD, The French National Center for Scientific Research
Part 4: Monsanto is not just seeking a patent for the method; they are seeking a patent on the pigs that are bred from this method--an astoundingly broad and dangerous claim. We have allowed Monsanto to own life! All of us eat Monsanto GMO foods on a daily basis. Studies link the extraordinarily high levels of rare childhood cancers to the direct increase in GMO foods and fluoridated drinking water worldwide!
Part 3: The patents are based on simple procedures that are broad in their claims. In one application (WO 2005/015989) Monsanto describes general methods of crossbreeding and selection using artificial insemination and other breeding methods that are already in use. The main "invention" is nothing more than a particular combination of these elements designed to speed up the breeding cycle for selected traits, in order to make the animals more commercially profitable.
Part 2: It's a first step toward the same kind of corporate control of an animal line that Monsanto is aggressively pursuing with various grain and vegetable lines. There are more than 160 countries and territories mentioned where the patent is sought including Europe, the Russian Federation, Asia, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand. WIPO itself can only receive applications, not grant patents. The applications are forwarded to regional patent offices.
Part 1: Monsanto pig patent applications were published in February 2005 at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in Geneva. Monsanto is seeking patents not only on methods of breeding, but on actual breeding herds of pigs as well as the offspring that result. If these patents are granted, Monsanto can legally prevent breeders and farmers from breeding pigs whose characteristics are described in the patent claims, or force them to pay royalties.
"Farmers that are producing grain right now are quite clearly losing money on every bushel, the prices are below the cost of production. On a lot of farms families deal with that by one or both spouses taking off farm jobs. So you literally have the case where small family farmers and their spouses are working off farm and subsidizing Monsanto and chemical fertilizer companies." -Darrin Qualman, National Farmers Union, Canada
"If you control oil, you control nations. If you control food, you control people." -Henry Kissinger
With Monsanto's Bt corn, the corn itself is registered as an insecticide. This is because every cell has been engineered to manufacture Bt, a natural bacterial toxin. If a corn borer eats any part of the plant, it will die.
Factory farms undercut their competition (family farmers) forcing them out of business, thus consolidating the market to work in their favour.
Part of the reaon the Delta between the euphraties and tigris is not being used is because Saddam drained and killed it off to force the people to leave. He ruined the best farm land in the region.
In America, "Local" produce in the average supermarket does mean "from this continent". Even in so-called healthy stores like Whole Foods and Trader Joe's you still see tons of produce from Chile and Mexico. It is detestable what the US government has done to this continent from the very first day they landed here. First genocide of the local Indian populations. Then slavery to support their land abuse and forced agriculture policy. Now, strong-arm measures to keep us addicted to oil. Sickening.
The editing is shockingly embarassing to Melli and Jenkins productions. And, Michael, thank you for hogging the spotlight. Nothing like doing an interview then yammering on boisterously without letting your guest get a word in edgewise.
@noobafied it would be difficult and way too expensive for him to get non-gmo do to the fact nobody is growing non-gmo and those who are are getting sued due to gmo crops ending up in theres
GMO / NON-GMO is VERY important. May I suggest that if Mr. Salatin misspoke, saying GMO when he meant NON-GMO, that the video needs to be reposted with that notation added. Let's avoid any confusion on this very important issue.
lol they need to make better use of their b-rolls. The cut aways are a bit odd. I have trouble editing long interviews as well. And I've noticed that the news and documentary style edits work well with this kinda stuff where they have a narrator interject in between each topics being discussed and allow other images to be put in other than the interview of them standing and talking.
When you harvest the chickens do you have to have a USDA inspector present? In fact, how do you go about slaughtering animals per USDA standards & inspection?
I love what they do, but I really hate the fact that Monsanto and Tyson et al. wholly own our Gov't. and in the process creating giant dead zones in the Chesapeake.
@NickRitar - this is really some of the best news I've had in recent weeks, possibly months. Joel is doing such good and important work, it seemed like such a disconnect - very happy to hear it was just misspeaking!! Cheers :D H
@ananiasacts If we had a real government, they wouldn't do shit because this is none of their business. Their job is to protect our freedom, nothing more.
If you like this then you should look up a book called The Fat of The Land by John Seymour. Hugh Fernley Wittingstall most certainly read this as it is the blue print for all he has done and thinks the could be said about this man as he too has said alot that is said in this book. Man John Seymour was really onto something when you think that he wrote the book in 1950's (he was a writer for the BBC and cramped lots of humour as well as amazing insights).
@helkyrie just got word from Mr Salatin himself, he let us know that it was a misspeak... he meant to say NON-GMO. We are host Joel for a series of talks here in Australia.
The guy does know what he is talking about ! Great stuff !
However is better if lots of people join in straight away because the industry doesn´t like competition and something terrible might happen to this brilliant man otherwise !!!
Mr Salatin....if I were born a few years before I was your wife would have had some competition!! You are truly one of the most brilliant minds of our time. I have tried to get signed up for your 2 day seminar but it is "sold out" for quite a time. I am anxious to figure out how to do what you do on my 10 acres....how can we scale it down to fit? And how can we defeat S 510?
Hogs were one of the last species in the standard US diet to be industrialized. As recently as thirty years ago, there were still quite a few small family farms raising hogs, either as a major income producer or as a sideline, many ran them in the woods at least part of the time. In Spain, hams from traditionally forest finished hogs can bring THOUSAND$ each. Some Europeans knew how to farm sustainably and some still do.
I love the way this guy runs his farm! He is so in tune with his animals and with nature. I do believe (I hope) that this is going to be the wave of the future, the methods that he's using.
I grew up on a small farm until I was 16, and my dad weren't nearly so sophisticated in the movement and management of plants and animals as this guy is. He basically used 19th century methods until he died, which was what he knew back then.
Well I agree with you, but let me just say that money in and of itself is not evil nor is working towards one's self-interest. All people are self-interested before they have other's interests at mind. The difference is that these "gestapo" farmers produce AT THE EXPENSE of other farmers and people. They are sustained through lobbies, subsidies, market entry restrictions, legislation favoritism. It's fine to be selfish as long as you don't infringe on other people's rights
It doesn't take that much land, most world farms are less than an acre. American's are the only ones that think we have to have 100s of acres to even feed ourselves
8:10 'sequestration' was the word Joel was looking for.
10:00 How about adding a layer to google earth: "food" designed to house, display, and educate us on the food cycle.
12:30 I wish he had explained how each part of his farm interacts with the others to create essentially a high knowledge/low tech solar power plant. How much of the kilowatt/sq. meter gets harvested into what he sells?
18:50 Maybe the chance to see a video of the life of the food we're about to eat would get us to eat better.
Although he did say.."then they eat local GMO grains like the chickens"..in part 2 he says that the chickens/poultry eat local GMO-FREE grain!! Now that makes more sense!!
The politicians are only part of the problem. The larger one is the corporations that people shop at that control the politicians via donations. The 2nd part is educating the masses.
He does more good the anything else, but the "local GMO" was a real disappointment to hear. I wonder what "local GMO" seed manufacture supplied it... Monsanto maybe? What is that?
lol you make that sound so simple! i could grow my own if you could find some non GMO seed witch i have my doubts, what makes you think most people are able to grow anything? Im fortunate to have married into land...
This man from Polyface is an absolute genious and the day the rest of us growers think like him will be the day that America will right it self from the wrong track it is on
I love this guy, if only his style of farming was the norm... we'd be a much healthier society. It'd probably be cheaper too but then of course corporations like Monsanto wouldn't be making billions monopolizing the industry.

FAMILY FARMS
At sunrise on their family farm their day's work has begun.
They feed the cow and milk her, and pat her little one.
They gather eggs from the chickens and fill their bowls with grain.
The happy sheep dog wags her tail, for she's never worn a chain.

The eggs will go to the farmer's market later in the day.
They'll harvest all the garden fare that nature brought their way.
Their deep, rich soil with lush green growth will keep them working strong
with tending all their garden rows and farming all day long.
The market gives them rest and shade as buyers come along.
They greet the ones they see each week as friends they've known for long.
eastariel 3 months ago
This give and take of buy and sell makes the farmers proud
that the healthy food they bring to the market draws a grateful crowd.
Dear family farms, you're a national treasure, a tradition we must keep.
You grow the spirit of America strong, so we won't be corralled like sheep.
Those corporate bullies try to break you down, yet you stand so strong and tall.
We must stand up for the family farms and save them, one and all.

On farms not allowing visitors - some don't want people to see their industrial methods. Others don't have the time to conduct tours...
Others know that what people see can be misunderstood, or twisted against the farmers NO MATTER how great the farm is.
Yet others have been told by their insurance companies NOT to host visitors, and 'agri-tourism' insurance can be prohibitively expensive.
Jefferdaughter 1 year ago

Joel summarizes so much of what folks really need to understand!
All of the behind-the-scenes farming "gestapos" are working with a true purpose that IS NOT in our best interest -the goal is Money alone...
All the while, treating the animals more poorly than the people! The 'science' behind their care is appalling - at best.
Ignorance is bliss for so many ...
TrickleCreekFarm 1 year ago
@TrickleCreekFarm
