I absolutely adore this film! Watched it since i was young and had no idea what half the stuff they were talking- just loved the dances, singing and characters. Thanks for uploading i might have to see if i can buy this somewhere since my VHS of it is obsolete now... :)
The point of ACL isn't just to show how tough the business is. Yes, it very accurately portrays how tough life as a performer can be, but the musical also shows just how dedicated every one of these performers is to their passion. Show business isn't about getting famous; it's about doing what you love, and sacrificing everything to do it. The musical is shows just how tough and courageous performers are.
I understand, but my reaction is still the same. So I will repeat my original statement that I don't not feel cheery after ACL. It just made me glad I never even considered entertainment as a profession.
I always thought that it was kind of ironic that the girl in the Grey one piece with the belt who came in with her husband, the guy in the white shirt, is actually the daughter of Bob Fosse. And that Fosse's Chicago, lost out to A Chorus Line at the Tony awards! Crazy to me, but you know Chorus Line is a very "feel good" kinda thing whereas Chicago is pretty much the exact opposite!
Really?? I always felt sad at the end of ACL because it shows how heartbreaking the business is. There are so many talented performers and so few spots for them to work.
But at the very end of the play when they're singing, "One" we see that EVERYBODY got the job. Not only the people from the last call-back, but the people left after the cattle call.
The part where the 8 dancers are selected for work clearly shows everyone did NOT get the job. To say that is like saying "Fantine and Eponine are in the finale, so that means they didn't really die."
The point of "One" is to take the identities that the play works so hard to establish - to give a visual to the belief dancers really are a dime a dozen. Besides, many musicals have entire-cast finales.
Its obvious that in the main plot line everyone doesn't get the job. However, its a bit like getting to the end of a play or movie and seeing that the characters that you liked aren't really dead, just actors who've played a part in a performance. In the end all those people that didn't get the job don't disappear, they get up on go on to other jobs.
Seeing the other dancers at the end isn't generally seen as a bad or negative thing. The response is usually positive.
But they did.. At then end doesn't the director person say something like actually, you're all in the show now go get really.. or something along those lines..? That's what we're doing at the end of our version....o.O"
Most movie versions of musicals suck when compared to the stage version. That's why they are not supposed to be compared, but enjoy as something different. Not everyone can get to Broadway or to see a touring company. Sometimes movies are all people have.
A touring company came to Scotland to perform A Chorus Line and boy was it a disappointment after seeing the movie - You just dont get the same quality of dancers in a touring show as you got in this film

I think the movie was awful. Compared to the actual musical, this movie sucked.

thats a bit harsh....the talent involved in this movie is ineffable..to say that it was awful is a tad over doing it. just a tad.... 0.o
