Well Im Mexican by born and proudly descendant from Romani people my great grant parents who came to México to scape from the world war they came from Italy(but not italian i'm not sure from where the rest of the family came from) and I don't think it's a cliché is part of our history and even that many of us live in big cities,with nice houses and internet access there are still many "gypsys" are still nomads...and still being the target of hate crimes

As for the suffering got 1000s of years - let me clarify this point.

We, the Rromani race began our progrssion originally began as Muscians and entertainers "lent" to other empires.

Aprox 1,500 years ago we began our nomadic journey from our origns (geneticlly proved to be Asian sub-continent) & aprox 1000yrs were inhabitaning the Byzantium Empire (Modern Greece/Turkey).

The first archeological "human" remains were was found in Africa and is considered the oldest "human" (upright walking human ancestor), is female and has been named "EVE".

I don't think they suffered for "thousands" of years. Probably ONE thousand at most. A big proportion of them would have become dislodged from their kingdoms in Northern India due to invasions of Islamic armies. Their ancestors (and the ancestors of present day North Indians) thousands of years prior to that would have come from Europe, to where today's Roma folk have "returned", though unintentionally.
