it supposed to taste better mixed with mustard, green onions and soy sauce. i never tasted it before, but really wish to. but can't find any local store, damnit.. lol
I love how it's recommended that nattou be stirred up.
Stirring it increases the Evil Within tenfold. I've had it a couple of times and noticed that it manages to get even more disgusting and slick, the more it's disturbed.
Hehe! You should have bought the japanese one with the Noh Mask Mascot and had it straight out of the fridge with soya sauce instead of the mustard. I noticed your packet was not japanese, hence the fact that it was missing the all important condiments ^^;;
@saintangelius - yeah, this one was bought at the general asian market in austin. should look for a true japanese only market...that's hard to come by though.
Man, this is the only food that I've ever tried in my life that I have trouble with. Might not try it again with mustard and soy sauce. I'll probably add an egg and rice and try it that way.
lolol i actually love it now and it amazes how i got to that point because i was just like you in the beginning. maybe there's some kind of psychological connection with my childhood because i have vague memories of my mom eating it. enough with the freudian mumbo jumbo, this video is really funny!
i have a stomach of steel......or so i thought i had this in vegas it brought back memories of drinkn in high school spewing hot chunks and prayn to the toilet gods......yes thats what it taste like
After seeing all these natto videos on Youtube I had to go buy some and try it. The store sells the same Hime brand that's in this video. To me it smelled and tasted like burnt coffee. Even after the used container spent the night in the garbage, the residue only smelled faintly of burnt coffee to me -- no stinky feet. Anyway, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks it smells like burnt coffee.
I've had natto and stinky tofu (natto-Japan, stinky tofu-Taiwan) and I heard that both are really stinky. On first impression natto, to me, didn't taste or smell like anything so I didn't think it was nasty. I've had it for breakfast with rice and soy sauce. The first time I had stinky tofu it didn't smell too bad, but other times I encountered stinky tofu, it stunk, or smelled strong. The taste was okay, and the texture was good. But I think I'd go for natto if I had a choice ^^
wow, you'd go to natto instead of stinky tofu? I would do the very opposite! Haahaaaa...of course, I haven't had the stinky tofu that they sell in Taiwan yet so perhaps until I eat the Taiwanese version, I should keep my mouth shut about it!
Then I'll give you my stinky tofu so you could try it and you could give me your natto ^^
It's funny, when I went to Japan my friends mostly didn't like natto, but I didn't think it was that bad, but in Taiwan my friends thought stinky tofu wasn't good, and this time I agreed x3 It probably depends where you get it if it smells bad. It's not bad if it doesn't stink a lot...but if it doesn't stink I guess it's just normal tofu :)
I didn't taste anything when I tried it. But I will surely try again soon... and next time, I will wait for the Natto to melt completely so I can experience the sweaty foot in sock smell. : )
Please forgive, but natto is an acquired taste -- I've had it several times under many guises, in Japan and in Japanese restaurants here in the US. Every time, I recoil. In the same way, I would never tell someone that a ripe cheese is delicious - especially someone from China or Japan who was not used to cheese. I grew up with cheese, so I like it. But it's an acquired taste.
my second attempt making natto are very successful, I'm having natto almost everyday, the remaining natto, i divided it in small packs with paper cups and kept it in the freezer :)
actually the fermentation process failed, I forgot to add some sugar and salt while mixing the bacillus natto with soy bean, the natto stickiness are too little only :( gonna do it again next week.
no worries, i'm not going to give up that easily, I decided to do it again tomorrow, tonight I gonna wash and soak new raw soy beans to start making natto again, luckily it just 500 grams of soy beans only that failed to ferment, its not total failure it just that its not sticky enough which I consider a failure. A total failure is the beans is contaminated with other germs and have sour taste
the thermometer has arrived but my light bulb is not ready yet, I gonna be busy these few days, have to go to outstation do some things, I'll be making natto next week, will continue to post how it goes on
fermentation process is done, currently the aging process is in progress, I have to admit the fermentation process does stinks, but I'm a health cautious person, I don't mind of the smell
Haha,I've seen gintama[an anime] where one of the characters is obseessed with natto and she flings it at people. So it's meant to be edible and a weapon :D
yeah, he did, I think. That was shot in all natural lighting. We were lucky to have a wall that blocked out the direct rays of the sun. His apartment complex is weird, but very useful if you want to shoot outside. Thanks for the compliments.
It was filmed with a Panasonic HVX200. The audio was recored with a Sennheiser Lavalier wireless microphone. The graphics and editing were all done by myself in Final Cut Pro and After Effects 7. The film like image is a result of a 35mm lens adapter called "Brevis 35" lens adapter. Thanks for your comment.
natto is actually a very healthy food which many japanese kids like to eat. i personally do not like it, but if you mix in some green onion and egg yolk, and eat it with rice, the stink goes away and an even more insane sticky feeling ensues. give it a shot!
It didn't have a taste when I tried a bit afterwards. But if you wait until it thaws out properly, you won't want to eat it because it just smells like a sweaty foot just taken out of a soaking wet sock after a day's hard work in the sun...Good luck.

If you dont put inside the egg and sauces, of course, they smell is not pleasant!! Most important: you need to twist much more the natto beans!

Natto is awesome stuff. Raw egg, natto, kimchi, soy sauce mixed up is the best ever. Forget the rice next time too.

another way if beginners want to eat natto in the general way, add a bit of white vinegar, the vinegar will cover the acquired taste/smell
prophecy2012 2 years ago
the general way to eat natto for beginners are quite torturing that can't stand the aquired smell,
beginners can start eating natto other ways, like natto curry, natto toast, natto ramen, natto kimchi, natto ice cream, natto spaghetti
Peace to all for first timer consuming natto
