I've had two beagles now in my lifetime and I recommend getting a female. They are much more mellow, but by far beagles are the best dog on the planet.... cute, loyal, smart, and so funny!

Beagles will listen when they want to listen. But they are so lovable. My oldest Beagle, Joey, died December 17, 2009. He had a miond of his own and would listen if it suited him.

Good with families... mind as well as they want to at the moment. If they get a smell in their nose they are going to follow it no matter how many times you tell them 'no.' They like to sneak outside and explore. I chased my beagle down the street a couple times when the door was opened a crack. You have to remember they were bred for single-minded pack hunting.

My beagle got into a bag of dog food and darn near ate the whole thing (they love food) and stole a breakfast roll off my plate as I was distracted reading the newspaper (years ago). It's charming to remember it, but if you run a 'military household' and demand perfect order, the beagle is not the doggie for you.

I adopted Joey when he was 9 years old. Based on the Beagle mischief he still continues to do at the age of 14, the thought of him as a puppy scares me.

He even opened a refridgerator at the age of seven while he was in rescue. At one foster home he chased ducks onto a frozen pond and stayed in the middle of the lake. The police came to help bring him back. But he's my boy.

Your best bet would be to adopt one. It may not be a puppy but still an adult beagle is just as good. I saved my beagle/bassett from being sent to the pound by my step mom and he was six or seven months old.

Beagles aren't too hard to train you just have to be firm with them. You give a beagle any slack they will just try and take advantage of it. It just takes some time like with any other dog.

PS: food is a GREAT motivator for beagles. My dog will do anything for a piece of cheese.

As Shadow already said though they are known to run off, especially if they find a good scent. So I would recommend an electric fence or if you can't afford one maybe just a long lead.
