Thanks. I probably worked overnight to do both in one night if I remember correctly. I was constantly jumping back and forth between Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, and Soundtrack Pro.

Well the effect at 0:23 was done by cloning out the objects in Photoshop, moving them to separate layers, importing the layers into After Effects and animating them from in there. Andrew Kramer's "Virtual 3D Photos" tutorial covers the basics of this technique, but moves the layers in Z space giving them a 3D feel. I did not need to do this, but it is a great addition to this effect known as "2.5-D." You can find that tutorial on Video Copilot.

Yeah, you did a great job with this Aaron, what did you find more difficult, the motion graphics, or the layer work you did with AE?

The layer work was more difficult. Anything that required masking frame by frame was the hardest. Like when the streak spirals around him after he lands at 0:29. I had to mask around the shape of his body frame by frame.

I used Final Cut 5 and Soundtrack Pro (All in Final Cut Studio). I've yet to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2. But all the effects and motion graphics were done in After Effects 6.5.

I used Final Cut Pro for the rough editing, and then used After Effects for some of the final Editing steps. Thanks a lot. I made it into the Top 5, but Sheckler didn't choose mine to win.

I don't skate myself but have lots of friends who skate (both casually and religiously). They never mentioned these problems, although I do understand where you're coming from. But even those who skate can appreciate the timing of this piece. It all comes down to whether you simply watch it to be entertained, or if you watch it solely for the tricks. I went for both, but focused on the former while editing. This means not everyone will enjoy it and I understand that.

I know... and since this was done for an editing and post production contest I first and foremost focused on the timing, diversity, and mood of the editing. And the editing could not get boring. And since the "average viewer" was going to be voting for this edit, I needed to be able to keep the attention of the "average viewer."

Well since I was focused more on spreading out the different locations and tricks to keep things moving at a good pace, it sometimes meant NOT putting the same trick/location back to back to back.  Because if I did that, the average viewer would be bored. So I deviated to other footage before revisiting the old trick/location later.
