  • Hayate! Abare Tosonami! Ha....

  • Hes very good. Only thing is i wouldnt really call those "Basic Moves" tbh. lol if i was a white belt and got asked to do that for basics *phfaffa* scary thought.

Thats not to take anything away from the great technique and execution along with a professional image.

I love watching the different .... GAH forgot the word, the difference in ways of doing particular things, (whats the word?!?!)

Very good demo of Karate and how it should be.

  • @Zipidy2k6, thank you for your comment and I hope you enjoy my other martial arts videos as well.

  • @PaulGale wish this dojo was close to me so i could train there :( , fantastic display!

  • @Zipidy2k6 I'm a part of Shotokan, that stuff takes mondo concentration and stamina.

  • @SonicPAJ I too practise Shotokan and I know. Not sure what your reply was directed at :P

  • @Zipidy2k6 I think I was talking about....I'm not sure, but I guess I could mean the whole thing of learning the art, or what the person in the vid was doing.

  • @SonicPAJ AHH sorry, now totally understand that exact part of my initial comment that was directed at.

    Thanks.

  • @Zipidy2k6 those are basics...

  • 100% fantastic at last a video on youtube which shows a student with respect for his dojo, sensei and karate. to many videos show disrespectfull students being taught crap and its nice to see how it should be done. it shows that you have earnt the belt you wear and it shows your sensei knows what he is teaching. please post more videos of you and your club so that others can see the proper way to act in a dojo

  • @putty2812, thank you very much for your comment. I really do appreciate your nice attitude and would like to share more of my martial arts videos with you. Please check out my Heian Shodan video. I would really like to get your opinion on what you think of my tutorial. Thanks again!

  • Haha! You're pretty good though.

  • @ThePhantom2K9, thanks!

  • Shinpuyaku too

  • @ThePhantom2K9, one of my katas has a hurricane kick in it...maybe I'll demonstrate some time.

  • You forgot the Shoryuken

  • @ThePhantom2K9, next time for sure.

  • hi again,

search youtube for mawashi geri and take a look at kagawa sensei's mawashi geri, should be the first one.

notice how relaxed his arms are and how upright his back allways is. also don't let his leg apperture intimidate you as all he does can be done following the same principals anly lower.

    oss

  • @galarim, thank you for the feedback.

  • Awesome

  • @beautenoire, thanks!

  • @PaulGale each time I look at this video I am blown away - I test for my green belt in two weeks... wish me luck :0)

  • @beautenoire, hey there, I wish you the best of luck in your performance in two weeks. I hope you pass your green belt test and feel great in doing so. Just train hard in the meantime and keep yourself healthy. Thanks for the positive feedback, too...I appreciate it. Oh and soon I will be adding Shotokan Karate tutorial videos to my website: Paul Gale Network . com

  • you must improve your leg kick's..

  • @tommyviva2000, there's always room for improvement...no doubt about it.

  • It seems like he cant punch higher with his feet.....

  • @Tamerlan87, would you mind elaborating? I didn't get that. Thanks.

  • i used to have speed like this before my elbows got hyperextended :( Now i ahve trouble just throwing a fully extended punch :( But this makes me want to train hard again, maybe one day i can get past that issu eand be good again :D

  • @bloodriotiori, I wish you the best, bud.

  • i used to be able to do that :(

  • @CrisisCoreGenisis52, hey, it's never too late to hop back into things.

  • I dont think he made hip twistin rotations as obvious as it should be.

  • @ryansai, thanks for the feedback.

  • Ok this is my opinion so don't get fucking Pissy at me.

i think he's very good in karate, i also think he sucks at TEACHING karate. Im only a green belt, but my karate teacher always teaches me to do moves in a slow position then work you're way up to fast only when you can do it perfect though.

  • @RSWorldsEnd, who sucks at teaching?

  • Looks so stupid but i know those are kick ass punches

  • @HINDER016, pretty powerful indeed when executed properly.

  • @aidanstaff69, I have trained in kickboxing as well and it too is a great style for different reasons.

  • This is great. Because I am paying to learn this twice a week. With this i am improving my performance.

  • @moco50, I'm glad that I can help with your practice.

  • ah, well just watched some more and it really is an interesting video :) I mean, yes there are mistakes, but also things I myself didn't pay too much attention too before :O .. I've got some kids to teach in a few hours, and this video made me remind the importance of the basics :) .. yay! got me motivated :P gj! :P

  • I started skipping halfway the video. However, the first thing I saw with the simple forward punches, and tbh overall a bit. Is that your working a lot from the shoulders. You first make a step, .. and then the punch comes. Should be at the same time, step finished, punch finished. This also causes your punches to make a sort of half-circle movement upwards, instead of straight forwards. You've got a lot of power. So finish the hip rotation / end of the punch and step at the same time :)

  • cool im a black belt to, im in koshiro kempo

  • ka ka......

  • Punching without guarding, and without driving with the shoulder, hip or the leg is one of the many reasons why I quit karate.

  • which style were u training? .... cuz i train karate and we always guard when we punch and we allways drive leg hip shoulder then punch.

  • Shotokan-ryu. Watch the straght punches in this dude's kata up until 25 seconds in, and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. The only style of Karate that I found preferable is Shidokan.

  • you learn your alphabet before you learn words same idea when you start karate you learn a complete technique then you make combinations. also when you punch one hand is punching the other hand that goes to the hip (hikate) would have hold of your opponent and pulling them onto the punch so the marking hand is the block.

  • In my shotokan class all of our punches have to be driven by the hip, and we also guard when we punch.

  • It would be silly to not guard and not use the hip rotation.

High technical quality is an trademark of Shotokan karate, Either you didn't follow your instructors pointers or he didn't watch his students.

  • aha... okay...

  • i'm sorry to say that this black belt test form is much easier than the first form you'll learn in any traditional kung fu school

  • This isnt a black belt test. just an standart Kihon practice.

JKA karate is of very high quality and even while there was a time where it was easy to get belts, that time is over now.

  • This looks exactly like my black belt 1st Dan test.

  • That's cool. Are you under SKIF?

  • Yes sir. Well, actually I WAS. I left Karate more than 2 years ago, but in these days I was thinking in training again. I did my 1st Dan test and passed under a Japanese Sensei called Iroshi Ishikawa (7° Dan). I failed the first time I did the test (like most people in their first-time black-belt test, with this Sensei). The second time, I passed :)

How about you? Were you trained under SKIF too?

  • what's SKIF?

  • Abreviation for "Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation".

  • Why does he punch after each step? Wouldn't someone skilled just move the second he starts moving?

  • It's just a demonstration of moves.

  • man..this guy is fast..

  • Thank you.

  • From 4.27 what is that? ushiro geri and what?

  • Roundhouse kick/back thrust kick combination.

  • I didnt think that people still trained using techniques against the air.

I suppose on a grading it is ok but just to train using only that method is wrong. I presume bagwork and maki wari is part of the training?

Oh by the way did you pass the grade? and what grade was it.

  • For basic practice, this type of training is ok. I prefer hitting pads, bags, sparring, and other, more physical applications...specifically fighting.

  • Good.

Glad to hear it. My take. Dont get too drawn in to what some(not all) Japanese karate ka have.

There are plenty of karate ka who have some good stuff.

    Plenty who have bad stuff

  • That's true. In any art, any sport, etc., there'll always be good representors and those that aren't.

  • You are very skilled. I am deeply, deeply impressed. Though, if you don't mind me suggesting something, I'd like you to work more on your chambering. Otherwise, I am very impressed with both your form, and fluidity.

  • Thank you very much for your comment; it's great to receive all kinds of feedback from fellow martial artists. I will continue to train hard and improve.

  • I am only a lowly orange belt in Shotokan (although I am going for my red belt in two days)I train anywhere from 2 - 7 hours with my sensei and also almost every night as well, I love watching accomplished practitioners doing the movements with such skill - it makes me happy. Gives us lower grades something to look up to! The only problem I find with the Shotokan system is that it is so long between gradings! But your video is inspirational, thank you. Hope to see more very soon.

    xnxyx

  • Good for you on being an orange belt and I wish you a successful red belt test, tomorrow. Thank you for the nice words about my video, and keep it up, yourself. I do have four other Shotokan Karate videos that are up, if you'd like to see them.

  • Liked it very much...just a slight echo which made it a bit difficult to hear but very nicely put together.

  • Oh thank you very much; I appreciate it.

  • why is everything linear?

  • That's just the particular set of motions for this performance; it's not always like this.

  • i likey

  • I'm glad you like the video, thanks for the comment.

  • OOS PAUL.This seems like SKIF GRADING?

  • Yes, you're right on the money; Shotokan Karate International Federation.

  • Thank you for the answer. Without a doubt that the techniques bases are exhausting, a lot of energy, but I congratulate him because it is with spirit and with being able to. OSS!

  • Oh you're definitely welcome for the answer; I like talking with everyone, because there's always room to share info and learn some. This was me training in December, 2007 and maybe later this month I'll share something new. Oss.

  • Very good this video.

Represents the base, it represents the foundation of the Karaté Shotocan.

In the final part it is visible the fatigue, the physical preparation is important.

    Congratulations!

  • Thank you for your nice on my performance, I appreciate it. Maybe sometime soon I'll put up another video. Take it easy and have a good one.

  • This is good, I like the sequences, great execution.

  • Thank you for your feedback, bud. If I record any upcoming martial arts performances of mine, I'll put them up. Have a good one.

  • noone fucks with Paul Gale

  • I love training and hope to continue getting better and learning more. Thanks for the comment, man.

  • i am impressed, finally a good practitioner on youtube i used to do shukokai karate, almost the same stuff, a few differences but nothing major, all your techniques look solid but I have to say, work on your breathing, remember, diaphragm and controlled breathing, try not to expand the chest so much as much as the diaphragm and stomach, dont get nervous and carried away with the motions, haha i know its hard when ur on camera but try it

You're motions are solid, time to see some sparring!

    -Joe

  • Thank you for the positive comment, Joe. That's one of the great things about YouTube; having such a huge place to show your work and get such feedback. Have a good one.

  • Paul let me know when Sensai starts the class again I'd like to come back and start from the very beginning in August.

    Richard

  • Paul,

Great to see karate in action, I can't wait to begin training.

    Richard Gump

  • Thanks. I hope you have a good experience with martial arts.

  • heloo

iam goin for my black belt soon but i still cant do a good side kick or roundhouse kick i have looked at videos but i just cant do it is there any think i can do

  • Practice both moves very slowly. Perhaps you need more balance or strength in your hib abductors, to perform the kicks, better. What in particular is difficult about each move, for you?

  • Thanks for your reply the main problems are the hieght of the kicks and the movement of my hips on each one any further help??

  • How is your flexibility, the balance of your supporting leg, and the strength in your kicking leg?

You need hip flexibility, and that will just come in time, after working at it over and again. Your supporting leg needs to be well balanced, so you can maintain the stance, properly. And as for your stregth, legs in general, are pretty heavy, so perhaps you need to make them stronger, so your starting position can be "knee above your belt".

  • kedan parai - The ultimate move! hahaha

that guy's like a kata machine. looks nice, but i'd like to see a brawl. After all, people love violence. lol

  • It would be nice to put up some of my fights; maybe that'll be next.

  • Great stuff, stumbled onto one of your Videogame Q&A and then was surprised to see that you practice Shotokan as well. And I thought I was the only geek who trained in Shotokan :D

I was quite pleased to see that it was almost identical to what I've been taught over the years... I've seen a lot of bad Karate on Youtube, so it's always a pleasure to see some quality videos like this (and I would love to see more from you if you have any to upload).

  • For starters, that's cool how you found this video; you never know how one thing lead to something totally different.

Also, thank you for the compliments; I appreciate it. Hopefully I'll put up other martial arts videos I have, too. Have a good one.

  • This indeed is really good quality Shotokan.

  • Thank you for the compliment, I appreciate it. Have a good one.

  • Nice.

  • Thank you.

  • you are pretty good i actually practice shotokan karate myself and i have a purple belt

  • Thank you and that's really cool that you're a purple belt. Keep it up.

  • Nice basics, although I've never seen exam combos w/ a slow gedan barrie, all the same very well executed.

    Paul, who was the Sensei?

What level grading were you taking?

    Respectfully

    P.A.

    Las Vegas Shotokan

  • Thank you for the comment. I train with Hanshi Hiroyasu Fujishima. Hachi-Dan.

  • I actually have no knowledge of Karate.... But on the last move... Where you suppose to punch at the pen without touching it? I am just wondering...

  • Yup, that's it exactly. I had to punch very close to the pen, 12 times, and at different angles, speeds in between, distances, etc., without touching it. And I didn't touch the pen, so that was good.

  • oh ok! THanks for explaining!

  • You're totally welcome. Thank you for all of your cool comments.

  • Awesome video. Were you taking a belt test?

  • Thanks, you should watch it to some music from Bloodsport.

  • Cool! I do Korean Martial Arts (Tang Soo Do) ;)

  • Hey that's really cool. My first martial art (when I was seven, was a Korean Martial Art: Tae Kwon Do). The first time I started doing any type of physical fighting style, was when I was four, and that was with wrestling. I'm familiar with Tang Soo Do though, in fact, one my clients that I train is a 3rd Degree Black Belt in it. I didn't know that you study martial arts, but I'm very happy to hear it.

  • You know Shotokan..

    I know Goju-Ryu..

    What does this mean.

  • I've sparred and trained with some people that studied Goju-Ryu; awesome stuff. I love all martial arts, since I think that each one offers something unique. As for your question, "What does this mean?", it means that YouTube's got a lot of martial artists and I think that's great. Have a good one.

  • I was expecting more of a "Means nothing" answer. But both be correct.

Have a good one as well.
