Cold water does not seal up your hair cuticles. Water is basic (pH 7 or more) and opens up the cuticles. Like our skin, our hair is acidic too, and it requires an acid-based product to close the cuticle and seal in what moisture it has. So Aloe Vera Gel or Juice, or something acidic usually is the one that closes the hair cuticles and seals in the moisture.
@AlaMetMetAla Um if what you say is true, why does every hair care specialist I have spoken to, say the exact opposite? Aloe Vera Gell/Juice if I'm not mistaken corrects your phBalance. That has nothing to do with closing your hair follicles, not cuticles. But what do I know, my degree is in psychology.
You are so correct about the water moisturizing your hair! I tried telling a lady that name utubehaircare! She swear up and down that water doesnot mositurizes your hair, but leave the product in your hair and that so many girls are misinformed on youtube! I told her that water is mositurzing for our hair, but she doesnot think so, she thinks its not! I know crazy lol!
so have you noticed (since posting this vid) if those products have in fact worked for retaining your moisture? I have that problem and don't really want to have to use a lot of different prodcuts--as that can get expensive!
My Variation of this: My Water Base: Infusium 23 Leave-In conditioner & water in a spray bottle; Oil Base: a castor oil & olive oil mixture; and Cream Base: shea butter and Coconut Oil mixture
I cut my hair about nine months ago and it grew about the first two months into about the length of your hair in this video. But since then it has not grown any and Im feeling very discouraged... Do u have any growth tips?
when u say keep moisture in natural hair does that mean I have to keep my hair wet, with moisture( such as care free curl activator) or oil in it AT ALL TIMES? so when it dries (like every 2 - 3 hours) I have to put more in my hair?
@keelathebee i think curl activator is the perfect solution seeing as it is a moisturizer and is water based at the same time. Saves time hunting around don't it. Just like you, i'm just as confused about the whole process!
you should use warm water to rinse the conditioner out. rinse it until you don't see any bubbles in the sink (means the conditioner is rinsed well) then use cold water to shut the cuticle down. leaving conditioners in the hair that weren't meant as leave ins can cause dandruff and other issues.
Thanks you so much for this break down. I am on my 1st week of going natural and my hair is so dry. I didn't understand if I was suppose to spray every day and what to spray with and why. Thanks you roc!!!
Quick Question... I just did my BC about two weeks ago. I jus wanted to kno is it ok to add water to your hair everyday. Every morning I wet my hair slightly (not to the point of saturation) and then I add oil and some aloe vera gel (which doesn't harden my hair, it actually makes it softer).
Thank you for the information. I am having severe problems with dryness after I did the BC with clippers. I just need a little more clarification though. After you wash and condition your hair, you put the other ingredients one at a time or do you mix the shea butter, oil, and gel together and make a concoction? Every little bit of information helps.
Thank you!! i was getting discouraged. I just went natural a few days ago and I have no idea of what to do with my hair! This video has helped me alot! Thanks!
so i m transiting from relaxer hair and i currently have braids but my scalp is dry and flaky!!!!! i don't know that to to. can someone recommend something inexpensive.
@dudealision I transitioned with braids for seven months. what i did was purchased a hair spray bottle from the beauty supply store and added water, olive oil, and grapeseed oil. i didnt really put anything on my scalp bcz i didnt want it to build up.so i would spray my scalp with my mix every morning and run my fingers thru my scalp, which helped with the dry itchy scalp. I would deep condition my hair then redo my braids every two weeks. i hope this helped (: Good luck with transitioning!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. From watching this video I understand why my hair is dry now and why my hair has always been dry: I've been using the wrong regimen. I love your vids!
Thank you! I know I am late but I am seven months natural and I was trying to figure this out. Do you melt you shea butter down and mix it with the coconut oil and aloe vera?
@NicoleNaturally that's what i wanna know, as i have a shea moisture thick hair cream which goes well with my hair. 31 YRS IT TOOK FOR ME TO REALIZE SHEA MOISTURE IS KEY! (Shame). So i too wanna know if i should take some, whisk it up whilst adding some coconut oil and moisturize like that,, OOORRR, 2, use sone and add some coconut oil in your fingers and then add to the hair?? this last method i used this morning, and my hair did feel SOOOOFT! But still never looks moisturized no matter what!
Gylcerine DOesnot work for me. I was battle the Dry monster for week now and that only think that works me is after I rinse out conditioner I apply oil(olive and castor). I apply it to soaking wet hair. Whne my hair dries its complete softnes. My husband even agress cause he would joke that my hair was as soft as a Brillo pad b4. lol. But not it feels and look moisturizes my scalp is happy and SOFTNESS!. I think because its cold out where Im at that Glycerin mix isnt working.
@kekedj214 This is the same thing that I do too. I oil my hair as soon as I have washed out the conditioner. Works great! I just tried a hot oil treatment last week too, and its ike my hair has been more moist this past week becuz of it!
@kekedj214 yeah i've read in numerous places to avoid humectants (glycerin, honey) during the winter because they draw moisture from the air. Honey is amazing for my hair during the winter when I dc and condition but now i just use conditioner and evoo and it's great. Thanks for sharing your tip about applying oil right after rinsing out your conditioner!

I'm Motivated and hopeful yay. I just can't imagine get out of the the shower then adding three different mixtures . Could you do your hair routine so i can see how you do it how much etc.
@RenderingDisbelief you can just add an oil to your conditioner before you apply it. then you just have to add the leave in and something to seal it in with.
What do u put in you're Shea butter mixture?

If you like, try hairfinity tablets from the states, or biotin based products

Fabulous video, great tips. It's important to mention also, never put oil on dry hair since oils will prevent moisture from getting in.
