  • It is nice for young people to given the opportunity to participate in a group music program. In my younger days got enrolled in private lessons. Was practicing for weekly lessons that went aimlessly nowhere. Years later got appreciation for music after joining a community band.

Did research into the successful "El Sistema" music program in Venezuela. Classes and instruments are provided free by the government to keep poor kids out of trouble. Many perform for the Simon Bolivar Youth orchestra.

  • We have 3 boys (now 10, 11 and 13) - we do not play any instruments at all. They started with Suzuki at the age of about 5/6 and are playing since - now two instruments each. Today people do not believe us that we do not play ourselves. Dr Suzuki's method is just great - especially for young children of "nonmusical parents". You can see them on our channel.

  • I have two children 4 & 7. We are blessed that Julie Marshall comes to our school twice a week and teachers the girls The Suzuki Method which is a fantastic way off teaching violin. A big thank you to Julie and of course Dr Suzuki.xxx

  • I am 47 and my friend is 62 she will be learning the Viola and I am learning the Violin. We are both musicians. She plays several instruments (Euphonium, Piano, Trumpet) Me Classical Guitar, Classical Piano, Ukulele, Trumpet and now a new instrument )If a 6 year old can do it so can we!

  • hi,thank you. we do. it's been 2 mos and we are still with bowing and foot placement

  • No Alarms

  • o_o they sound much better than me (i dont do suzuki :D) and ive been playing for what .....4 years?

  • hi my son is three and we just started suzuki. he does not pay attention and i get frustrated everytime we go for the lesson. should I continue or wait another year.

  • @vivien26us try a shorter lesson. Also, make sure the teacher can communicate well with your son. It's hard to focus when you're that little.

  • @vivien26us Remember children do have lesser concentration spans. Ask the Suzuki teacher to strech the lessons out. Like say at the beginning 5, 10 , 15, 20 then 25 min. As the student progresses, so will the hours that he/she is learning to play it. Long time musician.

  • suzuki suxxxxxxxxxxx ffs. and wf sing and have parents with they. this sucks if you want to be a violin player play with a proffessional violinist ann practis an shit in suzuki!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • little violins :D

  • "Mississippi Hot Dog".

  • WOW! Excellent video! Bringing back memories to when I first started to play the violin 20 years ago with the Suzuki method!!! Love it!

  • It is not the Suzuki program that is making a difference, it is the people who are helping and investing time in our children. Bravo!!!!!!!!

  • @griegklavier

Not everyone follows the Russian school. Long bows are not taught in the Twinkles. Try reading, studying and taking Suzuki teacher training before making judgements. Also, if you would like to make such judgements, statements, and questions try making them in the language the video is made in, so that you can actually get a response--or were you not wanting one? I think there is much to learn from the Russian school, but also much to learn from Suzuki. Try not to be close-minded.

  • thats a very cool video id love too be an instructor for something like this.

  • What a beautiful documentary. I wish to see a follow up of years later as they progress....

  • Why is it that whenever ''under priviledged'' kids are mentioned any where in the media, it only ever refers to blacks...?

What about the asian children, or middle eastern children or even caucasian children that could do with a break ...?

  • This was a very moving video, I wish there was more programs like this for the kids!!! GOOD JOB!

  • This is a great video, and a great method, im 16 and i have been playing the violin for about 9 years now, and Suzuki for maybe 5 years, and i have to say i would not be where i am now with out it..

  • Are the students still playing? Where can I get an update?

  • This is a wonderful program. I wish more students were given this opportunity. I am so proud of the students and dedicated parents in this documentary!!! WOW!!! Great idea!

  • art is important for children as it makes them more sensible. I'm 16 and will start violin soon.

  • yay, i'm not alone.

haha at first, i was worried about being a little bit late in learning how to play the violin and head down in the life road as a musician. but it seems okay now :)

  • It's actually better to start in your teens than to start when you are a young child, because teens learn faster than children do.

  • actually-this is proven wrong, as suzuki method is one based on memorization, it is proven that youger children retain it better. i started at 2 and am 15, and in book 8- and getting higher

  • @Glowmay Nope. Couldnt be further from the truth.

  • Im a suzuki grad! Started at 3 by my mother(suzuki teacher to this day) and now I am a sophomore at the Boston Conservatory.

  • i started to play suzuki 5 months ago and now i m in book number 3 oO btw i m 17

  • To DCProDuckshon-- You must live in a very small world and haven't seen the Suzuki curriculum. It would help you to study learning theory. I don't know where you study but there are wonderful Suzuki violinists EVERYWHERE. Playing ANY instrument has to be more than a pedantic exercise from the very beginning. There are MANY different ways of learning. Please don't put down something you don't understand.

  • And here's my favorite Shinichi Suzuki quote:

"Teaching music is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens. If children hear fine music from the day of their birth and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance. They get a beautiful heart."

  • Inspiring. Great vid. These kids are wonderful. Suzuki was right: Ear-training...imagination training...and having FUN...supportive, loving teachers..."reading" music should indeed come later.

I've had no lessons, but my own self-teaching approach was very Suzuki-like. My posted videos represent only up to three years of playing the violin. I'd already taught myself cello shortly before that.

Truly, it's all about training the mind and spirit. These kids will benifit in so many ways.

  • I started suzuki wen i was 3 .. im 14 now but ye =P suzuki is awesomeee

  • i started playing suzuki violin at the age of

6 and now im am 8 suzuki has taught me alot now im in book 4

  • lol i just started too.........

i wish i will be like them

  • she is so nice to children

  • i just started playing the violin. I wish i had that oppurtunity.

  • i was moved, i wish i had started the violin at that age.I am so jealous..

  • umm any one with the will to play music can do it this program is a great start for young violnist as i played for 5 years its never to late to learn the suzuki method or any kind

  • I only started learning the violin when I was 14.I wonder if i still have a chance of becoming

    a good violinist, I am now 15...

  • Suzuki is fantastic, as is this video! GO VIOLINS! XD

  • it kinda makes me nervous on how the little kids put their violin on their shoulders :Z

  • i played the song in the begining of the video a couple weeks ago

i two am proud to play the violin :)

  • Great documentary, Makes me proud to play the Violin.

  • clearly neither of you play violin and you are completely oblivious to everything good about violin.

  • I'm really sorry if I have offended most of you out there. And I'm not going to make a fuss or whatever, but clearly it was just an opinion, MY opinion. and i respect each and everyone's view regarding this matter. It was just the way I was raised that made me close-minded to other stuffs. so again, I'm really sorry.

PS i play the violin. for the first 2 years, I was taught using the Suzuki method. and after that, my "westernized" teacher flooded me with these kind of stuff.

  • What in the Suzukimethod do you dislike? All pieces in the 10 books are by wellknown European composers, except five in book 1.

  • Who cares about the method.... the kids enjoy it and are learning something!

    I think it's great!

  • lol ive been brought up 8 years in suski (now am 13) so eyah, you wana know the kids opionion who actully plays it and knows it, ok i personally think suski is a great! way to start but i wish i would of learned other methods, cause now i only know the susuki method :( and wish i knew others

  • lalalalalala mimimimimimi fafafafafafa mimimimimimi rererererere dodododododo sisisisisisi lalalalalala main lyric of star its: la mi fa mi re do si la mi re do si mi re do si la mi fa re do si la thats the song I study violin too!

  • i know you the violin player in the beginning arent you jonathan

  • I start zuzuki when I was 4 I´m 12 now and I think it is really fun to play violine!

  • My daughter, who is now 10 started Suzuki at age 4. When she first began, she was very introverted. Now, after 6 years of violin, where is the shyness??? She is in orchestra, and will be playing in Austin this May. Parents you have 2 choices, 1-keep your child in Suzuki 2-Get you child in Suzuki (I miss the ole mississipp stop stop)

  • "chills"

  • hey thats the song on working on book 3

  • I started lessons last year at age 53. With very little musical background (and a fabulous intructor) I am now 1/2 way thru book two. Pracitcing is my favorite part of my day. I highly recommend learning at any age.

  • Hi, Jon. I too started late in life, a year and a half ago at age 48 and am celebrating my 50th birthday this week with some solid understanding of Lully's Gavotte, which is the tenth selection in book two. I wish you well with your endeavors. It's the most fun I've ever had doing anything so difficult. And you?

  • Hornet,

I just hit one year and am on songs 4 and 5 in book two. My instructor doesn't want me to start vibrato but I am (behind her back)! I haven't started second position yet...have you?

    Jon

  • Aw..... You should've put Vivaldi Spring 1st movement which is in book7.

  • What is the piece at the very beginning ? From 0-31 seconds ? And who is playing ?

  • It's Concerto N.2, 3rd Movement by F. Seitz. It's in Book 4. And the song was recorded (officially) by a professional violinist named David Nadien specially for Suzuki Violin.

  • oh they r all so cute

    well done kids and parents

    :)

  • ahhh recuerdo cuando empece a tocar! :)

  • but what a shame of shoulder-rest they have???

  • Ummm.... for very small violins this is very common!!! It is more comfortable and tends to "stay put" better for young players!!

  • Yeah, and it's waste of money, also, because the violin will grow smaller for him when he grows up. That means also changing another shoulder rest. Until the guy reaches 3rd quarter of the violin size or the full size, it's not recommanded to have a shoulder rest.

  • i do suzuki for violin and im not planing to quit

  • what a shame, its not the best way to learn...

  • That's how I started- Suzuki! Granted, I broke away from it at age 12, but it certainly helped interest me in continuing forward. Discipline is a huge part of the Suzuki method, which certainly helped me achieve sucess in school and non-musical pursuits... like my current career! So thanks, Suzuki!

  • what is a suzuki violin

  • a method that is used to teach the violin.

  • I remember playing that song now im past that

  • Video muy inspirador gracias por subirlo.

  • What a wonderful tape. I will recomend it to parents if I will ever teach Suzuki Violin. I love the method both as a parent, former Suzuki Student, a violin teacher and player in general. It's all over the world and one of my videos shows a group in Iceland playing.

  • I remember when I was younger, I begged my mo to let me learn violin. She laughed at me and made me do piano. This makes me regret not being able to play. These kids will grow up musically ahead of everyone and I wish I could be like that. The violin is a beautiful instrument and I really want to learn. These kids are pretty damn lucky.

  • It's never too late to learn- I've heard back from several people ages 50+ who've only been playing for a couple of years and they absolutely love it. If you have desire and a good work ethic, I have all the confidence in the world that you could pick it up even now.

  • Oh wow...thanks. Most of my friends tell me that its too late for me to learn now. I already have the violin, its just that I don't know how I can really start. But thanks for the support!

    ^_^

  • This is ironic because I heard Suzuki was a serious racist. He's probably rolling over in his grave right about now

  • greaat video. i'd like to get more info though; i'd like to see how the kids have developed!

  • ill tell how they develop..

sadly none of them (if they continue with suzuki method)

will be able to play anything beyond simple children songs, believe i have seen alot of suzuki guys, they can't play.

  • obviously they'll graduate from the suzuki method... those suzuki guys you probably saw probably weren't even past 18 years old. when they grow older, they'll obviously go beyond suzuki and play harder songs if they continue playing and loving the violin.

  • Rubbish! You do not know anything about Suzuki method! Have you seen the Suzuki Violin Books? It's bloody difficult! Suzuki kids can play far better than kids with any other methods. A few days ago I went to the violin eisteddfod, top 3 winners of the most sections are in fact Suzuki kids! When the parents are involved in the lessons, the power of the learning doubles, no, hundredfold.Look at the Suzuki Violin book 4 onward. It's really hard stuff.

  • hahahahaha

    Heiftz,david oistrackh,perlman,vengerov,kogan, etc.

apart5 from being jewish, they played without coming close to suzuki method, everyone and one of the people that are considered to be the best, learned the classical method. results speak for themself.

  • Actually, most violinists these days have started out with Suzuki. I myself started out with Suzuki and I finished it by 4th grade and then was able to continue to play much harder pieces, and have recieved a scholarship to many music camps (such as Sphinx, Kinhaven, Tanglewood.) The Suzuki method is bad for some techniques, but it is a good starter for younger students.

  • (-_-)...

my friend violin playing goes beyond playing songs...

    (concertos, caprice, sonatas...)

and i can tell as a person which learns in an academy of music that there are no suzuki method violinsts here( meaning no who has EVER used the suzuki method has gotten here...)

it just doesn't work that way. the fingers must be stimulated on the fourth year of traning with harder pieces than songs, to say nothing of holding the violin and the bow etc. correctly

  • The point of the suzuki method is to improve the overall lives of children, and families. Not to make professional musicians. Dr. Suzuki said this himself. Academia is often anti-suzuki for various reasons.

Who would want to be a professional musician anyway ;)

  • I know people who are in Trinity Guildhall, who play the violin and are Suzuki players.

In the Croydon Youth Orchestra I know at least 3 other Suzuki players.

Most people use the Suzuki method in some way to help their playing.

I'm not saying that the Suzuki method is the best thing since sliced bread because of the problams wiith sight reading and sometimes pieces sound exactly the same but it is an excellent learning method.

  • strange how that the book 10 pieces are Mozart Concertos then!

  • this made me happy!

  • hey! i did that!!

  • Suzuki's hard.

  • Check out some more great Suzuki violin vids at my site!! Hope you subscribe also!

  • LAMO CAN U LEARN GUITAR WITH DIS?!?!

  • Just a note - the young boy in this movie is still playing, 6 years later, and is doing great.

  • could you please put a video of the young boy playing now.if you can --please--

  • Many children use this method however it basis everything on copying. I am a traditionaly taught violist meaning that I worked one on one with my teacher and sight read everything, I never listened and simply copied. In my orchestra you can tell who was taught with this method because when we get a new piece of music they look at it like hmmm, not sure what this is, while musicians like me grew up sight reading and have no problems.

  • that's not exactly true. I do the Suzuki Method and I sight read every piece I recieve. I have been playing for about seven years now and the Suzuki method has truly changed my life. The motto of Suzuki is "Nurtured by Love" by Shinichi Suzuki. It's a real book. I understand your point of view, however, a true Suzuki teacher incorporates sight reading at an early time when the child is ready in addition to auditory active listening.

  • Precisely. I was raised on Suzuki and I typically sight-read a piece to 85-90% accuracy on the first pass. Granted, perfect pitch definitely helps out, but proper Suzuki training involves sight-reading early on.

  • "They'll never be lonely. If you have music......that instrument becomes a friend for life." How true!!!

  • omg this is so cute

they are going to be AWESOME violinsts when they get older:D!!

  • cute:)

  • I used to study with the Suzuki, but not anymore.

  • I loved the video! I am a graduate of the Suzuki school and now i go to the Boston Conservatory in Boston, Mass.

  • This is a superb story. Thank you for sharing it. At The Amati Foundation we see these types of successes all the time, but this may be the best video representation I have come across. Bravo to you and Bravo to the kids.

  • wonderful video. My son and I watched it together. I hope he gets inspired to continue with violin -- it's been a struggle lately.

  • group lessons are indeed a key to the Suzuki method. ^^

  • LOVED IT!!! I found it very inspiring and learned new Suzuki things I will bring to my daughter's school. Useful and a touching documentary. Bravo!

  • LOVED IT!!!! Extremely useful information and a very touching documentary. Bravo!

  • Fabulous!

  • It's really great to see these kids learning. My son too learns the Suzuki method and he loved watching this video.

  • Very inspiring! Thanks so much for posting this wonderful video. I am a string teacher in Colorado....this makes me want to get my Suzuki certification....

  • Well !!! GET IT !!! :D

You will love working with Suzuki Method.
