Love this - all the rest are only flimsy fabrications, approximations of the truth. The Duke and his boys were the real deal. Never accept less than the truth - here it is in you face. Take a good close look.
@philipclock Look up Jazz : The First 100 Years cd on amazon or ebay. It came with my textbook for my jazz appreciation class and it has this song on it along with a lot more great jazz songs. Of course you posted that comment a while ago, so you might already have the song.
i guess i'm not born at the good time at all.We see so many musicians in the past that couldn't even earn a living with such genius when nowadays any nice-looking idiot comes out with a stupid song on the easiest expression of love and becomes a millionaire.
Jazz songs say way more than words could even try to say because you don't read, you are hit by genius and it's even frustrating because you can't put any words on it without wasting the song and shrinking the dimension of the Sound.
Which date was this recorded? He recorded four versions of the song (I believe) in 1926-7. The first one (credited as the Washingtonians) was faster, running only about 2:54, but this version is my favorite. I only wish I knew which 1927 session it was!
ohhhhhhhhhhh such a cool song well before its time if u've read any William S. Burroughs especially in NaKed LuNch he is always reminding his audience of "The Sounds of East St.Louis Toodle-oo" I love the Beat Generation & Bebop/Jazz brilliant thanks for uploading much appreciated

If my memory serves me well, this came out in '27. I found an old 78 of it a few years back, not in the best condition but it still plays.
The only song that Steely Dan has ever covered by anyone.
MikeG62 3 years ago
Actually not....Hogsnort Rupert did Ruby Baby in the 70's or late 60's...if my memory serves me well. Got the album. The 'Dan's take is just classy.
