Ford Mustang reached it's peak with this car. The '69 was cool, too but it seemed like in 70 they got everything just right. Love everything about it.
me and my dad are working on our 1970 mach 1. my dad also has a firebird that i lovem and im hopeing i will get one of those sweet cars some time soon ; )

@ pershing 22, 428 was for sure better than the 351 cleveland or windsor. I think windors mostly came in mercurys as in the cougar as well as some older pickups
in the UK, there was a ughhh, 1970 ford mustang, silver with the black strip on the bonnet, a fix up project, exhaust system needed replacing, wheels were a bit run down, but of rust here and there, pretty much the whole interior needed replacing, and the engine could've done with a clean and a bit of work, still started and ran and all but needed improving to make it exceptional you know what i'm saying? The car sold on ebay for I think it was around £1200. Looked a great car project. ~ J
@Crazygermankidowns Its been awhile since I've been on here, but go to Ebay and check out item number 280699508411. Its a '69 Mach 1 running and driving, California car. Only two days left on the auction!
I remember hearing something years ago about the 70 428 mustang mach 1. It had less then once inch clearance space in the engine bay. Because of this whether the car was under warranty or not dealers charged money for basic service because mechanics had to pull the motor out of the car.
428 in a car that size, must have made for a pretty lethal combo. I am sure that car weighs less than the current mustang. I personally, like 71-73 better, but I would take one of these for sure.
So can any of you guys give me an estimate of how much a average 70 mach 1 would go for now adays? how is the mileage? is it pricey to maintain? because im going to start driving soon and i'm interested in this car because i want something drifferent than the everyday Japanese motors we see everyday and i think this will definitely give me that kick im looking for.
If you look around enough you can probably find a cheep one. But for a show quality car like the one in this video be prepared to spend 30 or 40 grand. As far as running costs, I have no idea.
First off, the rule with guys is that the first car they get, they destroy. I don't know if you're an exception to the rule. A 70 Mach 1 would probably go for at least $25,000 in excellant condition (meaning that it's automatically ready for the road). The milage if you're lucky is about 16-18 mpg. It's pricey to maintain if you're cruel to it by racing it. My dad owned one of these and raced it in the 80s and right now it looks good but needs a lot of engine work. They're kind of expensive.
You have great taste in cars. I guarantee you will be hot shit if you drive this beuty. This thing is King of the road. But just be prepared that if you break anything on this, it will at least be $1,000.
whoa! haha alright thats way more than i had thought but thanks i'll look into something else. haha maybe my mind got the better of me... this is more like a dream car. But thanks for the info, really appreciate it!
You should find a better beginner vehicle. Although these are fun to drive, they're not a beginner vehicle. Try getting something reliable, like maybe a retired Police Cruiser. Crown Victorias are easy to drive, easy to maintain, and are pretty fast and sporty too.
just a question here?? te MAch1 was to replace the BOSS series right? but i own a '69 302 and to me that was alway's abit more in favor of the racing guy's. but i own the New one allso. do you think that Ford is lettin'out the Horses with the 'new'classic models such as the Boss 429 and Hertz????
428CJ, i hate to disagree with you, i really do consdering i LOVE fords, but the 67 stingray with a 427 was capable of running in the high 12's, just b/c even back then they didnt weigh nothing and they were also underrated, they pushed more like 500 instead of 425. but i think a mustang looks a lot better than a vette anyways in my opinion
The string ray is more of a sports car than a muscle car because it has no back seat. I know some magazines will group it with the muscle cars but it really a different kind of vehicle. Also, in most post, I said 1968 and 1969. Hot Rod Magazine was very specific when describing the 428 CJ Mustang. They said it was the quickest "regular production four-seater" in the history of man.
yea you watch muscle car shootout and see who wins. the 1969 429 boss mustang. it ran a 13.7 on shitty bi-supply tires! none of em ran in the 13's except that car. tranny was about gone on the challenger but it couldve ran 13's also
Pure stock 428 cobra jets were considerably quicker in the 1/4 mile than the Boss 429's. Those huge port BOSS 429's were designed for round track and lacked the bottom end torque. Peak horsepower rarely determines 1/4 mile time... Forget the magazines - pure stock BOSS 429's were 14 second cars - as were most muscle cars of the era.
lol it wasnt a magazine dude, it was on muscle car shootout on speed channel. they did runs with all the top muscle cars back then and the 69 429 ran a best of 13.7
"What would a stock CJ run in the 1/4 and what would it be capable of w/ a nice cam and some good heads?"
Before a recent rebuild, I ran 8.2 in 1/8 with street tires, modest street cam, stock intake and exhaust, and dished pistons. That was with 20 gallons of gas, trunk full, all options such as fold down rear seats, etc. It now has alum heads, roller street cam, headers, and an intake. Have not timed it yet but it's crazy fast compared to before. Expect high 11's to low 12's (auto trans).
MAYBE the Chevy's were faster, they were still butt ugly. GM has always produced the ugliest cars, the only company that ever made uglier cars was AMC. Everything they built was a monstrosity.
335 hp isn't all that far off. I would say it made 400 tops at the crank. LS6 454 were rated at 450 and made 500. The ZL1 427 was rated at 425 and made well past 500. LS6 Chevelles smoked this car and ZL! Camaros smoked every car. Don't hate the truth.
CJ's were perhaps the quickest muscle cars in 1968 and 1969. Only in 1970 did GM build muscle cars that ran in the 13's. The GTX was only quicker than the CJ's by .1 or .2 and only 678 GTX cars were built. They weren't regular production cars! A typical CJ is QUICKER than a typical HEMI. HEMI cars were too heavy and lacked sufficient low RPM torque. A '70 LS6 really did run in the 13's but only about 4000 were built compared to the 21,000+ CJ's that were on the road. '71 LS6 was 14 sec.
Can't begin to recall all the tanks of gas owners of these cars bought me back in the day ... of course I was driving the B-body Mopar with the 440 up ahead.. thanks guys !
L79 deuce? If you mean the L79 Nova's, pure stock, they were than a full second slower than a CJ. If you mean Yenko Deuce Nova, I don't think that had a L79 in it. I don't know what they ran but regardless, those were not regular production line cars. The CJ's were among the quickest of the regular production, assembly line muscle cars.
Because the 428 Cobra Jet engine really makes a great deal more than 335 horsepower. Car companies used to rate the horsepower of their engines very conservatively. The reason for this was so the insurance companies would charge more reasonable rates based on the low horsepower ratings.
@CCraftSting: Yeah, that's true............I also would like to point out that underrating continued well into the '70s{the '74-'75 Trans Ams were notorious}, but for the most part after '71-before around 1980 or so, it was mainly because net ratings were not only a new thing, but were even inaccurate for a while.............strange, huh?
{Yeah, it's a 2 year old comment, I know. Still interesting though.}
awesome could've floored the bitch on that burnout and shifted through em all still smokin em up but hey its a amazing car dont want to tear it up to bad
I had one of these once, paid $1500 in '76 and was an 'R' code (scj) I rarely took it past 6000rpm as that was just a waste of time. Too bad He didn't drive it like It was meant to be driven... very hard.. He could have smoked it right thru 4th gear. steppin on the gas was like flushin a toilet in those days. A tank full didn't last long on a friday night with the buds.

If its 351 is it Cleaveland-4 Barrel or Windsor.
With the 428CJ you either take the engine out or cut out the fender wells to service the spark plugs.
