Damn I am never switching to bass. I thought guitar players were snobby dicks but it seems that bass players can take being a type A douchebag personality to a whole new level. To the OP...Nice job dude. Quiet helpful.
A lot of negative responses to such a helpful post. If you have the experience and skill set to play the part Mr. Steele shares with us, you can also play all kinds of tasty stuff within the lick and changes. Being a good player is rarely about playing your instrument's part on a recording note for note. Technique is irrelevant if you're nailing the part. I play the sax runs on this without hitting the two open strings. Technique Freaks might have a cow watching my left hand. It sounds tight.
Professional? I can play that smoother on a walmart bass that I picked up out of the box and I'm in highschool. Your left hand was a train wreck below 5th fret around the low G, your fingers went straight and had no curve to them. Also buzzed so much! Build up finger strength and push the string down
You are a fool. Only a scared little kid who felt he had something to prove would've left such a ridiculous comment. Once you grow up, if you continue to study the instrument, you may one day look back on yourself and realize you sucked in highschool, you didn't really know anything yet and you probably shouldn't have criticized people with real experience and training.
Also, you're not hearing the strings buzzing, this is one of my earlier vids and I was having trouble getting the crappy camera mic to pick up the amp with good tone and I had the treble really high so it wouldn't clip. I had also just changed the strings and they sounded really tinny. Trust me, I play upright Jazz bass as well and I have plenty of finger strength.
@bass4grace@bass4grace Ive learned y share of piano theory for 9 years and have played my share of cello and upright bass also. I wouldn't be playing rush and yes songs on bass if I didn't have the skill set to
dont pay attention to these jackasses that say you suck... thanks for this lesson.. im trying to learn the song.. im using some tabs i found and this video to learn it... so im trying to make like my own bassline for this song... if that makes any sense.. keep up the good work dude..
i'm not complaining about your bass skills, i can tell you are very good... but have you listen to the song? the way you play the song is wrong, you're in the right key and everything and it sounds cool...but its simply not how it is played at all.
Yeah, I know. This is sort of the version I play after awhile of playing it with other musicians. It's been a long time since I actually sat with the recording, and you're right, it's different.
I'm teaching the gig version that I play because it's simple to memorize and execute. This vid is geared towards people learning to play bass in general or want to learn it quickly for a gig. If you want the EXACT note for note transciption, buy the sheet music.
This one here is a handy little back up bass that I keep at home. It's a Ibanez gtr 220, and was only $200. I grabbed that sucker right away ad recommend it as the best starter bass you kind find. I keep my pro gear and my $1,200 basses at my practice space.
I've been checkin' out your vids to learn some lines. I am a high school band director with a master's in music ed. I am also a bass guitarist in an army reserve rock band in the Philadelphia area. Thanks for the help!
Don't listen to the jerk with the rude comments. You are a great teacher!!!!!!!
You're a jerk, and you have no idea what you're talking about. I make money as a musician, and I am professionally trained and degreed in Bass guitar. That's all I mean by professional and nothing more.
Ok, that I'll admit to some extent. My professors said the same thing, but I get away with it because I have great tone when I play...which is mostly in the left hand. I was always complimented on my tone, also when playing upright. By the way, why are you out to get me so bad? Are you angry at the world or something?
If you're comment is based on me curling by 4th (Pinky) finger, that's only for the sake of these videos so it's easier to see which frets I'm on. That's not how I play live.
u guys need to take it easy if he wants to play like that or if he sucks or w.e(not saying that he does suck) keep it to urself dang dont have to tell the world
I could definately explain my notation more clearly, I have an associates degree in Music. But these lessons are directed towards people trying to learn bass, so I use fret numbers and things like that so everyone understands it.
We cover this song all the time in my band, and I feel like we have an excellent bassist. As a drummer, I would vouch for your skillz yo. Don't listen to that guy... Professional just means that you get paid, it's not characteristic of your playing. You rock, keep it up brother.

I have two questions for you, mister bass player.
1- I found it easier to simply make a pull-off on the second fret of the G string, near the end of the line. what do you think?
2- I tend to use three finger to play the lines. u think it's a bad habit?
thanks

You should get a Flea Bass. I think that's what the guy from DMB plays.

degreed?!?! you have a poor technic, your left hand is poor... you can say that you have the theory.

Everythings awesome, but the bass line is just wrong. Youd better check out the last part of the riff, the one on the D chord.
Have a nice day, professional bass player!
