To anyone out there who knows, is BBC any better than your Fox/NBC crap? CNN is pretty biased too, just a little more subtle about it than NBC. I'm hoping there is still a new program that covers news in a balanced fashion. Maybe there never was?

"Human Nature" (for want of better term) kills the news. Humans are creatures driven to seek out a world that conforms to their world-view. Doing anything else causes pain. BOTH the Internet AND the 24-hr. news cycle cater to this human need better than print media ever could. So "The News" as we knew it is dying, but nothing has changed. People have always subscribed to the papers/stations/ideas that make sense to them. Mourn nothing. The Seattle P-I is gone, but humans persist.
I used to think that our news in Germany were bad until I was able to compare it with the stuff from the US... Luckily, we only have two major 24h news channels and they mostly use cycles and documentaries to fill the gaps - still, a lot of it is just info- or entertainment.
And apart from that, the evening news, AFAIK, still hold the major share of viewers...
Sorry you could not be more wrong. In France we have just a couple hours of news cycle, it's terrible. The News is just short enough that they can cut out anything they dont fell important, in a 24 hours news cycle they cant. sure its a little long and they do need some Horse shit filler. But at least you get everything. French news is very broad and we really dont get all the details on a subject.
I don't know about France, but in the USA, the news is a joke. On Fox, whenever someone who is interviewed by them, they resort to immature name calling like children, if they disagree to try and discredit the the person rather than a fair and balanced debate over an issue. They should be sued for saying they are fair and balanced.
im french but i now live in the states. The news may be bad, but at least you get debates. In france we get fixed debates where the winner has already been decided. Imagine FOX news or MSNBC on every channel......
You have to realize that starting back in the 1940's JP Morgan starting buying up media outlets. The media is owned by a handful of elites, like the Rothschild's and Murdoch. Our debates are generally left and right and these 2 reams are art of the same team. The other teams are not allowed in, except on occasion to discredit them with childish behavior. It is entertainment for the dumbed down population, real issues seen occasionally on CSpan or the internet. Our TV is merely a distraction.
What are you talking about? They have 24 hour news channels in France!?!? You are talking about terrestrial TV, but in France you get Cable TV with 24 hours. You can get BBC News 24, which is better than ANYTHING here in America.
yes, and no one watches FRANCE 24. Its a pieace of shit news station. Plus the majority of the French population only has the 6 public Channels (TF1, France 2, France 3, Canal+/Arte/Nothing, France 5, and M6). The only way you can get FRANCE 24 is through satliet TV which very few people have. (cont)
(cont) Plus FRANCE 24, besides being a terible news channel, is just FRANCE 2 over and over and over again. Asking someone in France if they watch FRANCE 24 is like asking them if they watch FRANCE 4, or FRANCE 0 no one watches those channels.
France 24 is terrible, yes, but so are American 24 hour News channels. And the majority of French use Terrestrial, instead of satellite, because they value their lives more than Americans, who just spend most of it sat in front of the TV. Americans have always had the most channels, because TV is their god. TV SUCKS. It's a waste of your life. The more TV channels you have in your house the more of a fat loser you are.
Do you really want to have anything in common with the Americans? The fattest, laziest, most arrogant, most intellectually backward people in the western world? The people who value money above all things? The people devoid of culture, who have to sit on their fat asses eating junk food. The people who brag about how big their TV is, as if it's something to be proud of?
Europe is not perfect, but at least there is culture, history and open minded intelligence. And better food.
From Americans you can learn, Junk food, consumerism, arrogance, gun crime, mega stores, cheap ugly architecture and you can unlearn anything you already know about geography, history and culture.
American Cuisine - McDonalds
American Culture - Hollywood remakes
American Retail - Walmart, Kmart, Target
American Cars - Chevy Pickup
American passion - Guns, TV, More Guns.
American Music - Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Rap.
And only a fool threatens those violent, armed, tacky Americans with their big trucks and terrible food. Certainly not a smarmy bag full of empty wind -- you? Remember we Americans do all of your dirty work, helping keep this world free from tyranny and extremism. What has your sad excuse for a country done lately for for these causes? If we left world affairs to countries like yours, you'd be LITERALLY bent over a barrel taking it hard, squealing like a pig. So please shut up!!
One more thing, you pretentious fool. Don't try telling me you're an American, because you certainly have no sense of gratitude for the liberties and freedom you enjoy if you do live here in the US as you claim. Why don't you move to Albania if this country is so terrible? I'm sure they have great food and a wonderful culture there. If that doesn't work out for you, try North Korea or Communist China!!
Yes we all just eat big mac all day, watch tv, shop at poor people stores, and drive cheap crap cars.
Better then running from any little conflict, but since stereotypes are never true.
I haven't had a McDonald's in at least 10 years, Everyone has useless people in their country; ours just idolize celebrities, Not sure what is wrong with the stores but don't shop at them, GM cars are considered crap by most people and is why they are failing, Don't know anyone who owns a gun
I very much agree - the news became annoying for me when they started trying to pinch internet ideas like UGC (user generated content) and led important worldwide issues with opinion, not fact. That is NOT the job of the news, that is the job of comment and opinion programmes, not the news.
The death of new papers is because people don't need to buy a hard/paper copy of a story they can read online for free. Also stories can break much faster on the web than they can, waiting for the morning edition to roll off the presses and make it to a news stand.
The sinking ratings of television news cast has more to do with the fact that people can watch news on their computer anytime they fell like it. It's about freedom & convenience, not about the actually quality of the content.
I agree. I think it's also interesting how Fox news and CNN will get their respective viewers riled up about something the other one said. BOTH are looking for ratings.
theresident must be some kind of political genius or something because she never mentioned which news outlets she was referring to. Now you can watch people from both left and right say she is 100% correct about Fox News or 100% correct about CNN. Ha Ha ha.
i dont even bother watching the news..you get the same story told a different way everytime and they always have the important stories at the end and awhole bunch of "news" like what bitch from the hills got arrested and what for when no one gives a shit about that
I agree with suspekt29. The news today is just tailored to whatever view you hold. If you're a Right Winger you go to Fox. If you're a Lib you go to MSNBC or maybe CNN.
The Broadcast networks' News Divisions at least are trying to strike some kind of balance. However, I have the feeling that their days are numbered :(
The news was killed when we lost people we could rely and depend on, instead of being fed lie after lie. We have no Walter Kronkite in the 21st century. Everything we hear validates someones opinion. We hear one extreme or another and no truth because the truth is not what people want./
Well said. I remember when I was a little kid in the 70s and my parents watched either Walter Cronkite on CBS, David Brinkley on NBC or Howard K. Smith on ABC. They were some of the most honored and trusted newsmen of all time unlike the talking d-bags at MSNBC, CNBC, CNN, and oh yes, Fux Noise.
Well said. But the news killed itself... forever due to the fact that people now are programmed to respond to shinny object flashing before them. Any REAL news would be met with the understating of a dog tilting it's head due to an unusual sound it experiences.
I dont think an airplane hitting a helicoptor above the Hudson river was made up. Fox news has better ratings than CNN and MSNBC combined. It's CNN and MSNBC who make things up. If you listen to Glenn Beck who isnt a Republican or Democrat you can hear whats really going on.
Foxnews has better ratings, not because it is better programing, but because they are the only broadcast that caters to the conservative demographic.
Also, Glenn Beck is, and should be, the least respected of all pundits. He slings more propoganda, hate and fear mongering than anyone on television. What's also funny is that you act as though his vies are wholly his own, he has become ar more radical since leaving CNN because there is an audience for it now.
Lori, great video! You're right that print and tv news have slit their own throats. If they had more integrity with their approach & their product, maybe they could even charge for their product on the internet ? But let's face it..the new generation growing up has been fed internet since their first solid food, and they kinda went from having books read to them straight to TV/internet. I grew up watching my dad read 4 newspapers every day...that just doesn't happen anymore!
*sigh* everything is blurred. You, The Resident, just needs to start writing for newspapers instead of giving it all up for free on the internets. Then people will be like "woah, I'm a buy a newspaper to read what dat Resident got 2 say." Hmm...Newspapers should come with DVDs, cuz I'd miss seeing you talk about stuff if you did that. :< But then I'd probably just let unwatched DVDs pile up. It's a lot easier to just click on a YT! video in my Subscription panel. Whoo.
Another thing ... FOX is growing ... in her pretty little head .. her NYTimes or some other ultra liberal publication (Or liberal talk radio like Air America) is dying, and FAST! Hahaha
People want truth ... not progressive green fascist commie vonnegut trash ... they don't want trampy Joan Walsh or any other foul mouthed venom dripping commentary. They want news that retains a sense of respect and a fair and balanced approach ... like FOX news.
Wrong. The news killed itself by censoring out everything we want to know. They did it because powerful people and groups don't want us to know very basic things, like who killed JFK (it was the CIA), and why (he threatened the bankers) or why did World Trade Center building 7 collapse at free fall speed at 5:20pm on 9/11 when no plane struck it, nor did any debris (it was exploded with thermite).
The news companies in America are no more honest than the USSR's Pravda.
you might be right, but the "dying of news" isn't as obvious in countries (like mine) where there aren't 24 hours news channels.
i work at a Singaporean news channel. and our first bulletin start from 0630 and the last ends at about 2330. and already we don't have enough news to report about. going 24hrs must be worse.
Got some good points, plus she's cute! Yet still, facebook and Twitter are really starting to bore me along with Drudge and the other clones on the web. What kind of nut ball actually collects " eggs " on facebook?
Local news ( Lets beat this story to its death). False claims made about their integrity. Film at eleven, exclusive, pictures and on and on and on. They act more like promoters than reporters. What a joke it has become !
I agree with her on the "news as entertainment" for television, but the Internet is definetely killing newspapers. What a waste of paper and ink those are nowadays.
Resident - if you want to dig deeper on this, you should look into the FCC requirements regarding stations needing to have certain amounts of news - that was actually what started the blurring long before the 24 hour news. There are certain advantages for things being news. You also avoid certain union issues and are rewarded in other ways - start looking into FCC and you'll see what I mean. As for newspapers - that's falling with magazines - and that is the internet.
Eh, you give too much credit to 24 hour news programming.
It is the internet. Think about it. I bet more people watch you at a given time than certain programs on the news channels. Without the net, it wouldn't have happened.
We have the whole world of information at our finger tips, so we don't have to wait for the news to tell us.
From cellphones to RSS, Alerts, etc. We are informed 24 hours a day with what we want because of the net.
I could go into a book worth of why I personally don't watch the news ( as I find out, it tends to be brainless, biased entertainment for the ignorant & naive ) but, I won't.
Instead of papers embracing and making themselves more accustom to the net, they fight it and now, finally started to jump on but it's a little late for them.
There are more respected bloggers ( who, some, are also investigative journalists ) than TV Journalists.
Spot on sister. You called it. I can't stand to watch MSM news anymore. And I'm a news junkie. They deserve what they get but we have to listen to them whine-I'm offering cheese to go with it.
how about the fact that they don't serve our best interests? They report on stuff that doesn't matter, and bury the stories that matter. They serve the interests of politicians and companies, not the people. They were so on the bandwagon with "WMD in Iraq"
I use "the news" as a great place to get started, quick and dirty like "wikipedia".
However, at least in the US, crime has been decreasing dramatically since the 1990s even though the population has increased. These figures can be verified at the Bureau of Justice Statististics.
In summation, I'm saying that crime is down and "the media" has to work hard ot find a story.
Shiek, look closely. The statistics come from interviews, with only homicides coming from actual case data. So has crime dropped, or are the people who get robbed & raped simply not returning the surveys?
This is why I hate the phrase "studies show" so much. It's important to not only look at the data, but HOW the data was collected.
I think you've hit on something. It is the 24-hour cycle, where news is shown, and then certain items are recycled ad nauseum !! If "the news" on TV completely dies, it is going to be a horrible thing because there needs to be paid people who will go places and dig out the journalism, the corruption and hidden stuff. Professional reporters are essential, and that means more than just guys writing for HuffPost sitting in their jammies at home.
I agree wholeheartedly. It's not that people can read blogs and watch Youtubers instead of tv, it's that the "real journalists" have just as much integrity as the average random guy talking about whatever comes to mind. There are exceptions but they are rare and they still have to stuff their programs with filler in order to keep their ratings up.
...You do have a point though when you say that the best strategy for news sources is to concentrate on delivering good content and charging people for it.
I disagree because I think you (The Resident) and I have different understanding of the issue. The internet is killing the news because it's taking the advertising dollars and subscriptions away from newspapers. People such as I prefer to read the New York Times online instead of subscribing to it. I think the channels responsible for the 24 hour news cycles are doing just fine...
Or maybe people are just trying send the message that they are over priced and over rated and that there are better ways of passing the time than listening to someone read the news to them.
Perhaps it was the disinformation, spin and sound bites which did them in. There is so much hype these days. And the analysts and guest speakers just trash the shows and try to block a free exchange of ideas.
It might be dissatisfaction with media in general and recent changes. If Congress wanted to get the media they couldn't have picked a better way than letting them do whatever they wanted and providing more channels than anyone could possibly follow.
I agree with you on some points but my feeling is that news especially tv news is sensationalism at it's worst. The locals only shows fires, rapes, murder, and car accidents. The national news brings us what the corporations want us to know depending on the advertisers interests. A new drug study saying this pill works, or this surgery doesn't work depending on whether the insurance companies or drug companies are paying for it. I like the NYTimes because it's still good reading.
Brooklyn Heights Promenade.... cool. You should give a tour of the Brooklyn Heights buildings getting solar panels on their roofs. Landmarks is giving us architects a run for the money on them.
Journalism died in 1973-1974. Before Watergate (Woodward and Bernstein), journalists wanted to go out find the news and report it. After Watergate, all "journalism students" wanted to do was to destroy the president, but only if he was a conservative or Republican.
Those journalist were real journalist that did all the dirty work and found good stories. I don't see that now. Now the just cut and paste everything off the AP or anther news outlet. I wish they would go out and dig up stories so they can give us something original instead of cookie cutter crap.
LLarzelere, "but only if he was a conservative or Republican"? Apparently you're too young to remember when the rescue mission choppers crashed in the Iranian desert back in '79. Or the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
The President is a big target, regardless of what side of the fence he is on.
Nah .. I was out of high school when Nixon was being hounded from office over what history has shown to be less than a third-rate burglary attempt.
What did Nixon know and when? Geeze, who cares?
After the Marines crashed in the desert after some particularly bad planning, the news was already of to another story 6 hours later, tho Carter never recovered. When Clinton disclaimed sex with "that woman", the press was all "ok, let me drink the Kool-Aide" and off to bash anyone who didn't agree.
good point. there must be an outlet for news. if advertising will no longer support network news, stop doing it.
fox is doing well because it has a niche among the rightwing and has been successful in villainizing everyone else. the other outlets are competing for a diverse market share and i am not certain that including the two is really much of a comparison any longer.
newspapers have panedered to ad revenue for so long that only the largest even pretend to hire journalists.
I canceled my TV cable 24 years ago when I found each 30-minute program had 15 minutes of commercials. I dont miss it one bit. Advertisers and corporations control newspapers. Newspapers have become information whores for sale to the highest bidder. Ethics in journalism is rare these days. We search for the truth where we find it. If it isnt there then it dies.

150cgy 2 years ago
Sorry you could not be more wrong. In France we have just a couple hours of news cycle, it's terrible. The News is just short enough that they can cut out anything they dont fell important, in a 24 hours news cycle they cant. sure its a little long and they do need some Horse shit filler. But at least you get everything. French news is very broad and we really dont get all the details on a subject.
avengemm9dog 2 years ago
I don't know about France, but in the USA, the news is a joke. On Fox, whenever someone who is interviewed by them, they resort to immature name calling like children, if they disagree to try and discredit the the person rather than a fair and balanced debate over an issue. They should be sued for saying they are fair and balanced.
ApocalypticFervor 2 years ago
im french but i now live in the states. The news may be bad, but at least you get debates. In france we get fixed debates where the winner has already been decided. Imagine FOX news or MSNBC on every channel......
avengemm9dog 2 years ago
You have to realize that starting back in the 1940's JP Morgan starting buying up media outlets. The media is owned by a handful of elites, like the Rothschild's and Murdoch. Our debates are generally left and right and these 2 reams are art of the same team. The other teams are not allowed in, except on occasion to discredit them with childish behavior. It is entertainment for the dumbed down population, real issues seen occasionally on CSpan or the internet. Our TV is merely a distraction.
ApocalypticFervor 2 years ago
Why on earth would you leave France to come here? As soon as I have the money, I am getting out of here and going to Europe.
madhammudeux 2 years ago
What are you talking about? They have 24 hour news channels in France!?!? You are talking about terrestrial TV, but in France you get Cable TV with 24 hours. You can get BBC News 24, which is better than ANYTHING here in America.
madhammudeux 2 years ago
If you're really French, how have you never heard of FRANCE 24??? It's a 24 hour news channel!!!
madhammudeux 2 years ago
yes, and no one watches FRANCE 24. Its a pieace of shit news station. Plus the majority of the French population only has the 6 public Channels (TF1, France 2, France 3, Canal+/Arte/Nothing, France 5, and M6). The only way you can get FRANCE 24 is through satliet TV which very few people have. (cont)
avengemm9dog 2 years ago
(cont) Plus FRANCE 24, besides being a terible news channel, is just FRANCE 2 over and over and over again. Asking someone in France if they watch FRANCE 24 is like asking them if they watch FRANCE 4, or FRANCE 0 no one watches those channels.
avengemm9dog 2 years ago
France 24 is terrible, yes, but so are American 24 hour News channels. And the majority of French use Terrestrial, instead of satellite, because they value their lives more than Americans, who just spend most of it sat in front of the TV. Americans have always had the most channels, because TV is their god. TV SUCKS. It's a waste of your life. The more TV channels you have in your house the more of a fat loser you are.
madhammudeux 2 years ago
Do you really want to have anything in common with the Americans? The fattest, laziest, most arrogant, most intellectually backward people in the western world? The people who value money above all things? The people devoid of culture, who have to sit on their fat asses eating junk food. The people who brag about how big their TV is, as if it's something to be proud of?
Europe is not perfect, but at least there is culture, history and open minded intelligence. And better food.
madhammudeux 2 years ago
"Do you really want to have anything in common with the Americans?"
Yes. I believe that we can a lot from each other.
avengemm9dog 2 years ago 2
From Americans you can learn, Junk food, consumerism, arrogance, gun crime, mega stores, cheap ugly architecture and you can unlearn anything you already know about geography, history and culture.
American Cuisine - McDonalds
American Culture - Hollywood remakes
American Retail - Walmart, Kmart, Target
American Cars - Chevy Pickup
American passion - Guns, TV, More Guns.
American Music - Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Rap.
Only a fool copies the Americans.
madhammudeux 2 years ago
And only a fool threatens those violent, armed, tacky Americans with their big trucks and terrible food. Certainly not a smarmy bag full of empty wind -- you? Remember we Americans do all of your dirty work, helping keep this world free from tyranny and extremism. What has your sad excuse for a country done lately for for these causes? If we left world affairs to countries like yours, you'd be LITERALLY bent over a barrel taking it hard, squealing like a pig. So please shut up!!
oblibious47 2 years ago
One more thing, you pretentious fool. Don't try telling me you're an American, because you certainly have no sense of gratitude for the liberties and freedom you enjoy if you do live here in the US as you claim. Why don't you move to Albania if this country is so terrible? I'm sure they have great food and a wonderful culture there. If that doesn't work out for you, try North Korea or Communist China!!
oblibious47 2 years ago

That is NOT the job of the news, that is the job of comment and opinion programmes, not the news.
adamp29 2 years ago
The death of new papers is because people don't need to buy a hard/paper copy of a story they can read online for free. Also stories can break much faster on the web than they can, waiting for the morning edition to roll off the presses and make it to a news stand.
The sinking ratings of television news cast has more to do with the fact that people can watch news on their computer anytime they fell like it. It's about freedom & convenience, not about the actually quality of the content.

The news was killed when we lost people we could rely and depend on, instead of being fed lie after lie. We have no Walter Kronkite in the 21st century. Everything we hear validates someones opinion. We hear one extreme or another and no truth because the truth is not what people want./

I dont think an airplane hitting a helicoptor above the Hudson river was made up. Fox news has better ratings than CNN and MSNBC combined. It's CNN and MSNBC who make things up. If you listen to Glenn Beck who isnt a Republican or Democrat you can hear whats really going on.
onslaught42 2 years ago
Or the fact he did fake crying for a photoshoot. Sometimes his baby screams are enough for the populace who have to deal with his crap.
Deadbirdcheese 2 years ago

As for newspapers - that's falling with magazines - and that is the internet.
manexmachina 2 years ago
Eh, you give too much credit to 24 hour news programming.
It is the internet. Think about it. I bet more people watch you at a given time than certain programs on the news channels. Without the net, it wouldn't have happened.
We have the whole world of information at our finger tips, so we don't have to wait for the news to tell us.
From cellphones to RSS, Alerts, etc. We are informed 24 hours a day with what we want because of the net.
MrMP81 2 years ago
I could go into a book worth of why I personally don't watch the news ( as I find out, it tends to be brainless, biased entertainment for the ignorant & naive ) but, I won't.
Instead of papers embracing and making themselves more accustom to the net, they fight it and now, finally started to jump on but it's a little late for them.
There are more respected bloggers ( who, some, are also investigative journalists ) than TV Journalists.
So there's my point, in less than 1,000 words lol

I use "the news" as a great place to get started, quick and dirty like "wikipedia".
However, at least in the US, crime has been decreasing dramatically since the 1990s even though the population has increased. These figures can be verified at the Bureau of Justice Statististics.
In summation, I'm saying that crime is down and "the media" has to work hard ot find a story.
ShiekUrBooty 2 years ago

Professional reporters are essential, and that means more than just guys writing for HuffPost sitting in their jammies at home.
nicholas9999 2 years ago
I agree wholeheartedly. It's not that people can read blogs and watch Youtubers instead of tv, it's that the "real journalists" have just as much integrity as the average random guy talking about whatever comes to mind. There are exceptions but they are rare and they still have to stuff their programs with filler in order to keep their ratings up.

httprover 2 years ago
Perhaps it was the disinformation, spin and sound bites which did them in. There is so much hype these days. And the analysts and guest speakers just trash the shows and try to block a free exchange of ideas.
It might be dissatisfaction with media in general and recent changes. If Congress wanted to get the media they couldn't have picked a better way than letting them do whatever they wanted and providing more channels than anyone could possibly follow.
httprover 2 years ago
I agree with you on some points but my feeling is that news especially tv news is sensationalism at it's worst. The locals only shows fires, rapes, murder, and car accidents. The national news brings us what the corporations want us to know depending on the advertisers interests. A new drug study saying this pill works, or this surgery doesn't work depending on whether the insurance companies or drug companies are paying for it. I like the NYTimes because it's still good reading.

Journalism died in 1973-1974. Before Watergate (Woodward and Bernstein), journalists wanted to go out find the news and report it. After Watergate, all "journalism students" wanted to do was to destroy the president, but only if he was a conservative or Republican.
Thus died journalism, and with it the news.
llarzelere 2 years ago
Those journalist were real journalist that did all the dirty work and found good stories. I don't see that now. Now the just cut and paste everything off the AP or anther news outlet. I wish they would go out and dig up stories so they can give us something original instead of cookie cutter crap.

LLarzelere, "but only if he was a conservative or Republican"? Apparently you're too young to remember when the rescue mission choppers crashed in the Iranian desert back in '79. Or the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

When Clinton disclaimed sex with "that woman", the press was all "ok, let me drink the Kool-Aide" and off to bash anyone who didn't agree.
llarzelere 2 years ago
good point. there must be an outlet for news. if advertising will no longer support network news, stop doing it.
fox is doing well because it has a niche among the rightwing and has been successful in villainizing everyone else. the other outlets are competing for a diverse market share and i am not certain that including the two is really much of a comparison any longer.
newspapers have panedered to ad revenue for so long that only the largest even pretend to hire journalists.
xOLDxCOWBOYx 2 years ago
I canceled my TV cable 24 years ago when I found each 30-minute program had 15 minutes of commercials. I dont miss it one bit. Advertisers and corporations control newspapers. Newspapers have become information whores for sale to the highest bidder. Ethics in journalism is rare these days. We search for the truth where we find it. If it isnt there then it dies.
